Game 2: Dallas at Sacramento (April 20) In a reverse from game 1, neither team was shooting well in the 1st quarter and the game stayed really close with 5 ties and 10 leads changes and the largest lead being just 3 points. Instant replay ruled that Josh Howard's jumper at the quarter buzzer came just a fraction too late. Sacramento led 21-19 after 1. Sacramento shot 9-23 FG and Dallas shot 7-23 FG. Dallas led 28-27 with 8:25 left and went on a 8-2 mini-run to go up 36-29 with 5:55 remaining. Dallas led 40-35 with 4 minutes to go and Sacramento scored the next 9 points to go up 44-40 with 1:25 left as Dallas went over 3 minutes without scoring. A jumper by Michael Finley closed the scoring for the quarter. Dallas missed on 2 attempts as the quarter ended. Sacramento led 44-42 at the half. Chris Webber had 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists and Dirk Nowitzki had 17 points. Sacramento shot 39% FG and Dallas shot 38% FG. Coming out of halftime, Sacramento made an effort to get Peja Stojakovic involved - Stojakovic shot 2-10 FG in the 1st half (including missing some wide open shots). Stojakovic scored the Kings' first 7 points of the 3rd quarter and a hook by Webber completed Sacramento's 9-2 run to open the quarter to go up 53-44 with 8 minutes left. Dallas opened the quarter shooting 1-10 FG. Eddie Najera came in with 7:40 left in the quarter and changed the game for Dallas. He proved the hustle and energy that helped Dallas score the next 9 points and the Mavs tied the game at 53-53 with 4:50 remaining. The game stayed close over the rest of the quarter. Dallas again missed a shot at the quarter buzzer. Sacramento led 61-60 after 3. Sacramento shot a dismal 4-17 FG in the 3rd quarter (while Dallas was only slightly better at 7-23 FG), but kept the game close by shooting 8-10 FT. The 4th quarter continued the theme of the game with neither team able to shoot well and the game staying close. Doug Christie opened the quarter with a layup and Dallas then scored the next 6 points to go up 66-63 with 9 minutes to go. Dallas held a small lead - no larger than 4 points - over the next 5 minutes. A layup by Mike Bibby and jumper by Webber gave the Kings a 73-72 lead with 4:15 left. After a series of missed shots, Nowitzki got a dunk, but Bibby answered with a 3-pointer with 3 minutes remaining. Neither team scored over the next minute and Steve Nash hit 1 of 2 free throws with 2:10 left. Brad Miller gave the gift back by also hitting just 1-2 free throws and Sacramento led 77-75 with 1:50 to go. Dallas missed, but Nash got the rebound and he found Marquis Daniels for the layup to tie the game with 1:30 remaining. But Bibby answered with a bucket 1:15 left. Nash missed a layup, but Najera got the rebound and Daniels was fouled. Daniels hit both free throws to tie the game at 79-79 with 56 seconds to go. Dallas played good defense, but with 2 defenders on him as he rose, Bibby passed to Miller and he nailed the open 20-footer as the shot clock was running down. Sacramento led 81-79 with 34 seconds left. After a timeout, Nash's open 3-point attempt bounced off the back of the rim and Daniels elevated to snag the rebounded, landed, and bounced back up, but his 7-footer clanked off the front of the rim and Najera came crashing through going after the rebound and was (correctly) called for the foul with 19 seconds left. Najera's foul sent Webber to the line, but Webber missed both free throws. After a time out, Finley curled around the elbow with Stojakovic defending him and simply lost the ball as he elevated for a fadeaway (Stojakovic did not knock it loose) and Christie came up with the loose ball and was fouled with 9 seconds left. He hit both free throws to give Sacramento a 4 point lead. Nowitzki missed a quick 3-point attempt and that was game. Sacramento won 83-79. It was an ugly game and it was unbelievable how many open looks and layups both teams missed. It came down to which team would hit some shots down the stretch, and that team was not Dallas. Dallas shot 1-8 FG in the last 3 minutes of the game while Sacramento shot 3-4 FG. How bad was the shooting? Of the 17 players who played, only 3 shot 50% or better. For the game, Sacramento shot 37% (30-81) FG including 6-23 3-pointers and Dallas shot 32.3% (30-93) FG including 2-19 3-pointers - Dallas set a team playoff record low for lowest field goal percentage, but Sacramento tied the Mavs opponent playoff record low for field goals made. Sacramento shot 17-24 FT and Dallas shot 17-20 FT. Dallas did out-rebound Sacramento 57-48 including 23-13 offensive, but the Mavs were unable to convert with most of their extra shots. Sacramento only out-scored Dallas 38-36 in the paint. Sacramento did what they were supposed to do in holding home court. Now it is Dallas' turn to see if they can do the same. Sacramento leads the series 2-0. Game 3 is Saturday in Dallas. Mike Bibby got it going in the 2nd quarter and 4th quarter where he had 10 points in each quarter. He finished with 24 points including 9-16 FG and 4-5 3-pointers, but had just 4 assists. Chris Webber's triple-double looks impressive until you look at his shooting. He had 19 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 assists. But he shot just 6-19 FG and 7-12 FT. Peja Stojakovic never got it going outside of the first 2 minutes of the 3rd quarter where he hit 3 of his 5 made field goals. He had 13 points including 5-16 FG and 1-9 3-pointers. He did have 7 rebounds. Doug Christie had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Vlade Divac had 4 points on 2-8 FG and 5 rebounds in 20 minutes. Brad Miller played better this game and had 8 points and 7 rebounds in 19 minutes. Once again, the only Mav to have a really solid game was Dirk Nowitzki. He had 29 points and 10 rebounds. Steve Nash and Michael Finley again struggled. Nash had 13 points including 6-20 FG, but did have 5 rebounds and 9 assists. Finley had 10 points including 4-12 FG and just 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Marquis Daniels had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds including 5 offensive, but he shot just 5-15 FG. Eduardo Najera was the surprise sub midway through the 3rd quarter and he played so well that he played most the rest of the game. He was hustling, playing defense, and crashing the boards. He had 4 points on 2-3 FG (the only Mav to shoot 50% or better) and 9 rebounds including 5 offensive in his 20 minutes. Najera's play left Antoine Walker strapped to the bench in the 4th quarter. Walker had 5 points including 2-8 FG and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes. Josh Howard shot the worst of them all with 1-9 FG, but he did have 8 rebounds including 6 offensive (but just couldn't get anything to fall). Antawn Jamison only played 11 minutes due to tight hamstrings and did not score. Scott Williams got in for 2 negative minutes at the end of the 2nd quarter. Quotes Rick Adelman: "I said it would be different, I didn't think I'd be that right, after the last game where everyone was going up and down. Today just turned into a real struggle for both teams offensively. I give our guys credit because we just kept saying that you had to stay mentally tough, you had to stay with each possession no matter what was going on, you just had to stay with it. I think we did that. I think we really did that and we got the stops we needed to and we made some big plays down the stretch." Adelman on Bibby: "Mike was really good. We wanted to continue to go to him, especially with pick-and-rolls, make them guard that. I thought he was good. Obviously Webb was with a triple-double and everything. But Peja did a great job [on the last play]. He moved his feet, he didn't let him get around him, and he got his hand on the ball. And that is what we needed. I thought Anthony did a great job at the end. He could have easily got in the air, he just stayed away from Nowitzki. But that's what I said. The only thing that I was not happy with, and I understand that it's really hard with this team, is they kept killing us on the boards. But when you're trying to stop Nash and Nowitzki, you are all spread out and then Najera has free reign to the basket. So it's kind of like you can say we gave up a lot of them, but when you are trying to stop those 2 guys, [yes, his train of thought went a little off] the only 2 guys I thought we could have done a much better job on was Howard, especially a perimeter player, we should be able to keep him off. But overall to stay with it like we did. Both teams struggled from the floor, struggled all night long. But you got to make the plays down in the last 6 minutes and we did it." Adelman on defending Nowitzki: "I just think that when you are playing against them and our whole plan is it's really hard, because they started posting him up on Peja, and it's really hard. It puts a bigger guy on him when he tries to post up; if they try to isolate, we were going to come at him; if they play pick-and-roll, we were coming at him. As long as Chris got to him. That was the key. He has to get to him and get to him. And you have to hope our guys as this series goes along, our big guys, get a sense of what it's like to guard a guy like that and they keep staying with him and rely on your teammates. I thought there were 3 plays in the 4th quarter where Brad and Chris both they didn't do what we wanted. They stayed with the ball and they got 2 layups on rolls. They got to rely on the other people to be there. But those things, we hope we get better at as the series goes along. And we're going to be more consistent at it." Adelman: "They are the best team at home in the league. We've been the best team at home a number of years and we got beat here. I don't think, playoffs, it doesn't matter. We know that they are going to play with more energy. We know that they are very good there. But this is a totally different circumstance. We got 3 days off. Your mindset's different. You're not traveling. They are very good there, I know that. But you got to be able to withstand that energy level they're going to have and you got to be ready to make sure you control the tempo of the game. If we go to Dallas and we start quick-shooting the ball, it's going to be like the wind tunnel at us. We got to make sure they guard us the whole game and that they don't have that confidence where they can get that 10 or 12 points surge." Adelman: "We're both professional teams. We play a particular style and so do they. The so called experts who know everything say we can't defend anything. But we're in a playoff series and they're in a playoff series and they have good players and we have good players. And both teams want it. And I think both teams worked their tails off. Because we like to get up and down the court and we have more possessions, I'm not saying we're as good defensive as other people, but I think we can go out and defend people. But this is a playoff game and these 2, they're very good offensive teams. They both wanted it. They both shot poorly. And they both dug in. You had to make plays. I think both teams can defend if they want to defend. They just like to really get up and down and so do we. It doesn't surprise me, no. I didn't expect it, but it doesn't surprise me to see a game where both teams are very tight, because they both want to win it." Adelman on going the Stojakovic in the 2nd half: "We did. We tried to go to him immediately. I'll take a lot of the shots he got in the 1st half. I think he got a flow going there. But, Peja, I'll take a lot of shots he got tonight. We got to find a way to make sure he gets it going. But I thought when we got that 9 point lead, I thought we were on our way at that point. We couldn't make a shot for the next 2 or 3 minutes." Adelman on Finley's last play: "I've seen him do it before. I think a lot of it was because maybe Nash and Nowitzki were going so much, who had the most left. And maybe it surprised us. It didn't surprise me, I mean, Finley is one of their top 3 guys, so maybe they think they had an advantage there. Fortunately for us, Peja made a great play." Adelman on Najera and physical play: "You can't get into it in that situation. You throw a guy in the game like Najera and the only reason he's in the game is to beat the hell out of Webber. And he took him down twice. And I don't understand. I don't think there is a place for that in the league. The only reason he is in there is to be physical and beat him up and see if he can't get him mad. And luckily Webb, he didn't buy into it tonight. So if they guy wants to go play tough, physical, and everything else and you're grabbing people and pulling them down, that's not the way the game of basketball should be played." Chris Webber on his health: "It definitely felt good and I think it is getting much better. Starting to feel more comfortable. Starting to trust my body a little bit more. My body's starting to feel better. I came out in the beginning of the game trying to just be active because I knew that by scoring so much the other night, I knew they were going to do something on me and Peja. So I really thought to take advantages inside, but to be a decoy early. So it was more of a thought process. But I still feel like I'm really missing some easy shots, I'm really, really, really. But those are going to come. I think that it was a good game, but it can definitely get better." Webber on Najera: "That's his job. I really don't care. I think me a few years ago would let it work. But when you know that's the only reason somebody is playing is trying to frustrate you or beat you up a little bit or get you going is their only job and it's easy to go in and say this is the only reason why he is here. So I really don't care about that. He can have the tough guy act. Just want to get the win. That's his job. That's their strategy. What are you going to do about it. Just got to keep it in and keep playing." Webber on Bibby and Nash: "We have 2 people going at Steve - Doug and Mike, and that puts 2 different looks. As a big guy, stepping out on that pick-and-roll or just watching Steve go to work, I'm a fan of his, but also it's really crazy. You can't rebound as well. You don't know. He's so unorthodox. He can shoot off either leg, running jumpers. I think what was great about Mike was that he was patient. He didn't have a lot of points in the beginning. He just was patient and patient and waiting his time. Mike's play for us was really big because of our missing shots. Peja missed shots late. And he just stepped up. That's what's great about being on a team like this where guys can step up and wait their turn. I think that will be a big key to this series because I think Nash is the head of the team and as the head goes, the rest of the team goes. So he's a big part of them." Webber on Stojakovic's defense: "That's why we brought Peja here is for his defense. [laugh] And I told him, thanks for saving me at the end. No, but that's something that we definitely are trying is efforting. You're going to make some mistakes. Against a team like this, Dirk is going to score a lot of points, Nash is going to do his thing. It's just those effort plays, 2nd rebounds, 2nd chance points. But the whole thing is not being afraid. Not being afraid to make a mistake and embarrass yourself that you can't play D. And I think that it starts with Doug and the rest of us try to emulate that and play hard defense. That's really what won us the game, in a game where both teams shot in the 30s, I don't think that will happen again." Webber on what he's doing differently in the playoffs: "This is the moment I've been waiting for. And there is no tomorrow. So if I can't play game 3, then I just can't play game 3. It was always the plan to come back and get myself into a grove, that's what I've been saying from day 1. I just wanted to tune up for right now. So hopefully it will go as I planned. I came back early just to get a rhythm, to get a feel. I didn't want to be here right now not knowing what I could do, not trusting my body, not being able to spin baseline, not being able to jump off of one leg. Those are things I had to find out during the season and through trying times, coach stuck with me in the mist of everybody saying everything. I just wanted to come back early to try to tune up for right now. You know, I'm going to have my bad days with my body, but at least it's starting off pretty well." Webber on his condition: "I think it can get better, but I do think my percentage of being in shape is in the 80s. As far as being able to move, that's a whole other thing. I watch tape, I see myself skip the first 2 steps. Or if I'm running back on D, I have to run around with a kind of hop, those kind of things. That's what frustrates me more than anything, not being able to run freely, running stiff, reminding myself to get down and dealing with pain sometimes. As far as conditioning, it feels pretty good. Hopefully my mind and body will just come together pretty soon." Webber: "I'm really fired up. I was fired up. I was fired up because game 1 was a big win, so I was really happy about that. Tonight, all I could think about was every shot was agonizing, because I was watching it go in, wishing and praying it goes in. You don't want to go to Dallas down or tied. You don't. They're a good team. Their crowd is loud as well and they have a great arena. I'm really pumped. They only thing about it was I can be excited tonight, get dinner and talk to my brother and joke and laugh and then tomorrow, it's like so what. Because the next game if were 2-1 and then it could be 2-2. You can enjoy it while you can, which is tonight, and I'm really pumped up. But in the morning I try not to think about it as much." Webber on Dallas at home: "You know, I think they lost 5 out of 41. So they have an incredible record. We know what it's like to have a home court advantage. The years we've been here and played at home, up until the latter part of this year, we could just throw the ball up and it would go in the basket. So when you have that type of confidence at home, you got to be careful. And they have great players, like I said the other night. I know Michael Finley is going to come back on a mission, and I know the other guys are going to come back on a mission, ready to just try to bear us. It was very important for us to do this because you kind of give yourself some leeway and bought some time. But hopefully we can get 1 there and come back and close it - that's our goal. But if we didn't win 2 here, it would be a tougher situation than it is right now." Peja Stojakovic: "I don't have bonuses for Defensive Player of the Year, so I don't do that often. I was just trying to contain him. Trying to make him rush the play. I know he likes to go left and that's what he did." Mike Bibby: "We had a long talk before the playoffs got started. You only get one chance. We're trying to leave it all out there on the court every time we come out there. We're fighting for each other. That's the way we've been playing." Bibby: "We kept fighting. We were down late in the game. Shots weren't going in for us for a while. We kept fighting, we stuck in there. I think it came down to our defense again. We made stops when we had to and we put the ball in the basket when we had to." Bibby: "I don't know if was a defensive battle. Everyone was missing shots tonight. Both teams shot, what was it, 37%, 32%. It was either good defense or just an off night for everybody." Bibby: "The 4th quarter, I just wanted to be aggressive. I think I was just standing out there a lot in the 3rd. Just looking at things happen. I wanted to be a part of the game. The main thing in the 4th quarter, I was more aggressive and I was able to make things happen for myself and the team, since nothing was really happening in the half court. I tried to get us going in transition and it was working a little bit, so I tried to stay with that. The matchup between me and Steve, a lot of times Doug is guarding him and a lot of times I'm on him. Steve, I think, is what makes their team go. So I think when you keep him under control, that means it is tougher for their team." Bibby: "Honestly, we had a meeting before the playoffs started. We told everybody that we're going to be there for each other and regardless what happens everybody thinks we're solid. Keep playing, play as hard as you can, leave it all out there on the court. You might not get another chance at this again. Everybody is out there leaving everything on the court." Bibby: "We're just out there playing. Maybe earlier in the season, you would see us out there barking at the refs. But like I said, we had that meeting. It's all on us. We can't put it on anybody else, like the refs or anybody." Bibby on the next game: "Play the same way that we played here. Their fans are going to be rowdy just like ours. We just want to get in there and play the exact same way that we did here. We know it is going to be a tough game. Both teams are definitely going to shoot better. It's going to be a shootout when we get there. Just hopefully steal 1." Bibby on free throw shooting: "We haven't talked about that. During the season, we were like one of the best in the league on free throw shooting. So we're not worried about that." Bibby on turning the game around: "Transition, like I said. Things weren't going good for us in the halfcourt. We missed a lot of shots. It was a struggle for us to even get shots up. That's why, get the rebound, try to push it a little bit, try to give them a taste of their own medicine, like in the transition pick-and-rolls and stuff like that. Keep them honest." Bibby on his pass to Miller: "A lot of times, I go in the air like I'm going to shoot and it's a play that I kind of use as a decoy. The guys know that. When I went up, I saw Brad standing there and I just went with the flow." Vlade Divac: "It was definitely unusual for these two teams to have a game like this." Divac: "We didn't shoot well and they didn't shoot well. Obviously we are a much better defensive team than they are, so we took advantage of it." Brad Miller: "It felt good to finally do something I've been doing all year, hit an open jump shot." Don Nelson: "Well, that was an opportunity lost for us. I thought we had them in our sights and in striking distance. But who would have ever thought it would be a defensive battle, huh. Both teams, I thought, played very well defensively and executed our game plans. And we had a hard time scoring, like a lid was on the basket. Had plenty of opportunities, a lot of offensive rebounds, but could put very few back in. Just one of those nights you dread as a coach, but you anchor in your defense, and that was so solid that we stayed in the game. I'm sure that they are saying the same thing. It was a game neither team shot very well, but either team could have won this particular game. It becomes more difficult of course. The more games you lose, the tougher it becomes. However, the way a 7 game series is programmed that now we go home for 2 and we were the best home court team in the league this season, which is one thing that I was proud of. Our demise was that we weren't a very good road team. But we're going home and we need to win both games, there is no question about that." Nelson on Najera: "I put him in the game to play Chris Webber. He's played Chris pretty well in the past. He's our hustle guy and I thought he played an extremely intelligent game and I thought he did a really good job to keep us in the game." Nelson on what he wanted for the Finley play: "Exactly what we got. It's just a situation, I guess, where Mike is struggling to a point maybe where you can question whether or not that play should have been run. But that's a play we've run in the past that's been very successful of getting a good shot for us. But the ball slipped out of Mike's hands, I believe, and we came away with nothing. Anyway, those things will happen. We got the ball where we wanted it, to whom we wanted it, and it just didn't work out." Nelson: "Strange things happen. Jamison came up with some tight hamstrings and we were afraid he was going to injure himself in the 2nd half. So I couldn't play him. He was hobbling out there. Never could get him loose enough to get into the game. So that took one of our - what I think is the 6th man of the year, which we'll find out shortly - but took that away from our lineup and we're used to having him score at a high rate. Took him out of our hands. Other than that, I thought Najera was playing so well that I just left him in the game and I thought that's what we should have done at that point. But we just couldn't seem to get the ball in the basket enough to win this game. It was there for us, but was for not." Nelson: "There is always good things and bad things that come out of every game. You look at the numbers and, of course, we have to be happy with the rebounding. But you have to not only get the offensive rebound, but you have to put it back in the basket. So we executed half of it, but the other half we failed at." Nelson: "I thought that this one was one of those game we certainly could have won. I don't know if we could say we should have, but it was there for us and we just couldn't score - actually, we got really good shots: Nash's 3, he made that all year; just a lot of short shots; Marquis, you know, that's a shot that he makes. And he really hasn't shown how good of a player he is yet. But I'm real proud of both rookies. They're playing hard. They're learning. I'm going to continue to play them because I think they're going to be outstanding players and they need to get this experience under their belt." Nelson: "We didn't change our game plan. We just didn't shoot the ball. We shot 38% or whatever it was, you're not going to have a very high scoring game. We didn't change our philosophy. I didn't surprise anybody. You keep trying to get me to take credit for something I don't deserve. We tried to play a fast pace game. We had opportunities to run, we couldn't score. We couldn't shoot the ball. We couldn't finish. And so, as a result, it was a low scoring game. We'll continue to play the way that we try to play every night. I'm not changing. I'm not going to a half court game - if that's what you think happened, that didn't happen." Dirk Nowitzki on Finley's last play: "I think Mike's won a lot of games for us and Mike's been our leader all year. He's been playing phenomenal since the month of January, February. I thought it was a good play. We've ran it before. We just didn't score on it." Nowitzki: "This was definitily a heart break. I thought we played some good defense for the first time pretty much all year. We held them down to 37% shooting and if you would have told me before the game that they were going to shot 37% and they were going to win, I wouldn't have believed it. It's a tough loss. We only shot 32% ourselves and we're such a good shooting team. And I thought we had so many easy looks too. We had a lot of offensive rebounds and just missed a lot of layups down the stretch. I think we were right there. We had a couple of tip ins that rolled out again. The ball just didn't go our way at the end. Like I said, it is definitely a heart breaker, but I think we have confidence in our home court. We have the best home team of the whole league. Right now we're down 0-2, that's pretty frustrating, but if we get game 3 and make it a 2-1 series I think the whole thing is going to look a little different. Hopefully get some momentum in game 3 and make it a whole new series." Nowitzki: "I still think we had a lot of good looks. Steve had good looks. I actually had 5 good looks at the 3-point line. It was just one of those days where we didn't shoot the ball well. And like I said, we had a lot of layups that we missed. I thought still even though they played good defense, we had some good looks. We just didn't knock them down. [big sigh] It's tough right now." Nowitzki: "It was a great effort defensively I think from both teams. I think Eddie was huge for us coming in battling CWebb down on the low block. I thought the refs really didn't call much. It really was a playoff type game. There was a lot of wrestling going on. It was a fun game. It was a fun basketball game, even though the scoring wasn't up. It was fun to be part of it. Again, I can't believe we only scored 79 points. That's really what lost the game." Nowitzki on confidence in going home: "Like I said, we are the best home team of the league. So we just got to go home. I think especially game 3 is the biggest game for us right now. We can't look ahead at 2 games at home. We got to look at game 3 and I think that should get the momentum in our court. Hopefully the crowd will be there to support us like their crowd was here. And I think we should be able to pull out game 3 and make it a whole new series." Nowitzki on Jamison: "It's tough. You look at AJ, he hasn't been hurt all year. He's fighting through stuff. I don't know what happened, apparently he tweaked something. It's tough. For us, he's instance offense. He comes off the bench and he scores 16 to 18 points in a heart beat and he makes stuff happen off the offensive end. He really gives us points in the paint. Especially when we shot the ball like that, 32%, you can always need someone in there making a couple of floaters, getting us some easy baskets. That's what I thought we missed him pretty bad. But you know, they have Bobby Jackson out for the series and probably one of the best point guards in the league, so we already got a break there. Injuries are a part of the game. We'll see how AJ feels in game 3." Nowitzki on Sacramento's defense on Nash: "They know that Steve is a big part of our game. Steve breaks the defense down, he makes them collapse. And they really are trying to play a bigger guy on him with Christie and make that hard, play the passing lane, and just be tall and long on him. That's not easy, but I thought still he had a good game. He played hard. He left it all out on the court. He just didn't shoot the ball the way he wanted to.
