Josh Howard and Marquis Daniels were named to the All-Rookie 2nd teams. The All-Rookie teams are voted on by the coaches (who can't vote for their own players). Howard received 3 1st team votes and 23 2nd team votes. Daniels received 1 1st team vote and 18 2nd team votes. Game 4: Sacramento at Dallas (April 26) Sacramento jumped out to an early 7-2 lead with 9:15 left in an ugly looking quarter. The Kings took their largest lead of the quarter at 15-7 with 4:10 remaining, but Steve Nash answered with a 3-pointer and the Kings held a small lead the rest of the quarter. Sacramento led 21-18 after 1. Neither team was playing well and both were shooting a mere 32% FG - there were 33 rebounds in the the quarter. Sacramento did have an advantage at the line in shooting 6-10 FT while Dallas shot 1-3 FT. Antawn Jamison opened the 2nd quarter with a 3-pointer and a layup by Eddie Najera gave Dallas their first lead of the game at 23-21 with 10:30 left. The ugliness continued as both teams still struggled on offense and the game stayed close as there were 5 ties and 6 lead changes over the next 7 minutes. The Kings seemed to lose focus during the quarter and it was punctuated with an extremely lazy inbounds pass that Josh Howard efforted back to steal and was fouled on the layup attempt. Sacramento immediately called a timeout and coach Rick Adelman and Doug Christie were visibly yelling at the team for their sloppy play. A layup by Christie tied the game at 39-39 with 3:05 to go and the Kings wouldn't score again the rest of the quarter. Dallas was only slightly better in scoring 5 points (and missing 3 free throws). Dallas led 44-39 at the half. Both teams made 9 field goals in the quarter and there were a combined 40 rebounds grabbed. In a reverse from the 1st quarter, Dallas had a huge advantage from the line - but didn't take full advantage of it - in shooting 7-15 FT while Sacramento didn't attempt a single free throw. Antoine Walker opened the 3rd quarter with a layup and both teams finally found the basket in the early part of the quarter (13 points in 3 minutes, woo-hoo) and Dallas led 52-44 with 9:15 left. Sacramento then connected on consecutive layups and, after a minute drought by both teams (7 missed shots), Brad Miller got a layup to pull Sacramento within 50-52 with 7:30 to go. Both teams again threw up brick after brick over the next minute before Dirk Nowitzki hit a jumper to give Dallas a 54-50 lead with 5:50 remaining. Sacramento scored the next 4 points to tie the game at 54-54 with 5 minutes to go and the teams traded leads over the next 3 minutes. A 3-pointer by Peja Stojakovic and jumper by Mike Bibby gave Sacramento a 64-60 lead with 2:30 left. Sacramento would hold a small lead the rest of the quarter and Bibby hit a jumper at almost the quarter buzzer to give Sacramento a 70-65 lead after 3. Stojakovic had 12 points on 5-5 FG in the quarter. Sacramento found a little bit of a shooting touch (though it left them again in the 4th quarter) in shooting 12-20 FG while Dallas continued to struggle at 9-29 FG. Sacramento continued to hold a single-digit lead in the 4th quarter, but none larger than 8 points as they were unable to pull away. A layup by Darius Songaila gave Sacramento a 93-86 lead with 2:10 to go. Nowitzki missed point-blank, but was fouled on the rebound (both teams in the penalty). He hit both free throws (yeah). Chris Webber missed the hook badly and Marquis Daniels got the rebound and took the ball all the way the other way for the layup to pull Dallas within 90-93 with 1:25 remaining. Michael Finley knocked the ball away as Stojakovic drove, but Nash missed the quick 3-point attempt with 55 seconds remaining. Najera went for the steal, but was called for the foul with 38.4 seconds left and Webber hit 1 of 2 free throws. Dallas called timeout [and ticked me off by wasting a 2nd timeout just to advance the ball, leaving them with just 1 timeout left]. Dallas got the ball to Nowitzki and Songaila committed a reach in foul (dumb foul) with 33.3 seconds remaining - it was Songaila's 6th foul. Nowitzki hit both free throws to pull Dallas within 92-94. Sacramento called a timeout. After inbounding the ball, the Kings ran the clock down and Bibby's shot was short with 10 seconds left and the rebound bounced towards the baseline and Webber grabbed the ball, but his feet were on the out of bounds line and it was Dallas' ball with one more chance. After a timeout with 8.4 seconds on the clock, Dallas inbounded to Nash and he and Nowitzki ran the pick-and-roll up top. Stojakovic switched onto Nash and stayed tight on him as Nash juked around and Nash had to force a high arcing fade-away over Stojakovic and the shot clanked off the back of the rim to the right as the buzzer sounded. Sacramento won 94-92. It was a really ugly game full of a ton of 'I can't believe that didn't go in' shots by both teams. But the real misses were the free throws. Pure and simple, if Dallas would have hit their free throws any where near their normal clip, Dallas would have won this game. Dallas only shot 20-33 FT - that's 13 missed free throws in a 2 point loss.* Dallas shot 79.6% FT during the regular season, best in the league. Sacramento also missed some free throws and shot 19-27 FT. The free throws were just an extension of an ugly shooting game by both teams. Sacramento shot 39.6% (36-91) FG including 3-14 3-pointers and Dallas shot 34.7% (34-98) FG. Of the 17 players who played, only 3 shot 50% or better. It was simply not a good game by either team - Sacramento only scored 1 point in the last 2 minutes of the game. But it was a close game as the largest lead was just 8 points. As a result of the shooting, there were a ton of rebounds (set the Dallas 2-team record (which includes the regular season numbers)). Sacramento out-rebounded Dallas 68-55, but only had 1 more offensive rebound (24-23). Sacramento did commit 18 turnovers, but Dallas was only able to convert those into just 10 points (while Sacramento converted Dallas' 8 turnovers into 10 points). Dallas did out-score Sacramento 50-40 in the paint, but it should have been a lot more with all the blown layups. Dallas has no one to blame but themselves for this loss. Making your free throws is a basic thing and missing them cost Dallas this game. Sacramento now leads the series 3-1 and is one win from advance to the next round. Dallas will have to win the next 3 games, which includes 2 games in Sacramento, to survive, but simply need to focus on winning game 5. Game 5 is Thursday night in Sacramento. Sacramento played just 8 players and 6 of them played most of the minutes and produced. Mike Bibby was the high man with 22 points (but just 2 assists) including 8-20 FG. There was finally a Peja Stojakovic sighting. After shooting 1-11 FG in the 1st half, Stojakovic shot 7-14 FG in the 2nd half (though most in the 3rd quarter with his 5-5 FG). He had 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists. Doug Christie had a good all-around game with 13 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists. Chris Webber was up and down with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 0 assists, 3 blocks, and 7 turnovers. Brad Miller was solid off the bench with 10 points, 16 rebounds including 7 offensive, and 5 assists. Vlade Divac continues to be a non-factor in the series with just 4 points and 6 rebounds in 11 minutes. The Kings got a surprise contribution from Darius Songaila. He had 8 points and 6 rebounds before fouling out in the last minute of the game. No one from the Mavs had a real good game. Dirk Nowitzki had a solid double-double until you looked at his shooting (he had at least 2 point-blank layups that he simply missed). Nowitzki had 21 points on 5-22 FG and 11-14 FT and 14 rebounds including 7 offensive (which tied his career high for offensive boards). Michael Finley had 16 points on 7-15 FG, 1-7 3-pointers, and 1-3 FT (he shot 85% FT during the regular season). He only had 2 rebounds and 2 assists in his 46 minutes. Steve Nash had 11 points including 4-11 FG, 7 rebounds, and 9 assists. Antoine Walker was one of the few to play well in the 3rd quarter where he scored 8 off his 12 points. He also had 8 rebounds. Both rookies struggled mightily with their shot and were plagued by foul trouble. Marquis Daniels had 9 points on 4-13 FG and 1-4 FT, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Josh Howard had 7 points including 1-9 FG and 5 rebounds. Antawn Jamison was limited by an injury suffered during the game (but he still played). He had 10 points and 7 rebounds in 19 minutes. Eddie Najera had 6 points and 5 rebounds including 4 offensive in 18 minutes. *Fun with stats. If Dallas had shot their regular season free throw percentage with 33 attempts, they would have made 26. But Sacramento also shot less than their regular season free throw percentage (79.5%). If Sacramento had shot their regular season percentage with 27 attempts, they would have made 22 (actually 21 1/2). That's a difference of 4 points in what was a 2 point loss. Quotes Rick Adelman: "It's a great effort by our group after the other night. We still struggled in the 1st half offensively, but we woke up in the 2nd half. We started doing things we talked about and getting easier opportunities. Both teams played really hard. It was just one of those games that went right down to the end. But so many of my guys did a great job. Darius Songaila was terrific for us coming off the bench. And we got a big stop at the end. It's a win. We really needed to get one of these 2 before we went home and we got this one." Adelman on offense: "We just were different. We were so impatient and really didn't play with a lot of purpose or energy at all the other night. Like I told them tonight, which team, which team do you want to be? And we were just so different tonight. And we can be a lot better than we were tonight. But we were attacking different things. We weren't just standing around allowing them to dictate what they wanted us to do. To get Peja going was huge. I just kept telling him to shoot the ball. I had a feeling that as soon as he made 1 or 2, he was going to be a different player that you'd see out there, and it was." Adelman on Stojakovic: "I told him to be aggressive with his game and not be a spot up shooter only. We're going to run stuff to him. The last game, he came off and was fired, especially when he had the bigger guy on him, just settled for the long jumper. We wanted him to be aggressive. He's done that. I just think he got impatient and wanted to get the shot up. But he stayed with it and you see the improvement as a player because he had a tough game. I told him I've seen a lot of great players have miserable games in the playoffs. The key is you don't let it happen again. You just keep playing. You don't worry just because you had a bad game. Everybody has bad games. And he responded in the 2nd half." Adelman on Christie: "Doug has been playing his tail off. I thought that one stretch there, we lost our pose and started getting into too much. There was so much going on, contact and everything else. Overall, Doug gives us such emotion when he plays. He's the most emotional player we have and our guys feed off of him." Adelman on defending the last play: "We wanted to switch everything. We were going to switch everything. I just told Peja and Mike, I didn't think they'd have enough time for Dirk to roll with the time on the clock, so we wanted to be aggressive. I told Peja, you got to keep [Nash] in front of you. Don't let him beat you off the first dribble because he likes to come off and just attack, and he did that to Peja earlier. I tell you, Peja has the ability for a guy his size to move his feet. And he really locks in, he does a pretty good job. And it was a great play on his part. Mike stayed with Nowitzki and [Peja] made [Nash] take a tough shot. I said if you're going to tie the game, make him take a tough shot, don't go for pump fakes, make him shoot over you, and he did that." Chris Webber: "We did what we wanted to do. We wanted to come get a win. We've still got another game. It's not over." Webber: "We're very thrilled with this. My friends were telling me that I hadn't had my sneer, my swagger, to be myself. I've got that. The whole team does. I thought we all came out and played much better." Webber on his health: "I feel like I'm much better, but I still watch tape sometimes and see an old man limping. I still have my good and bad days. This year the pain is no where near where it was last year." Peja Stojakovic: "I knew I had to be aggressive and keep shooting the ball. They started falling and I was happy about that." Stojakovic: "I know how important this game was and I didn't want to let my teammates down. At halftime they told me to let it fly." Stojakovic: "I knew I had to play better basketball. I was awful the other night. Tonight, I tried so hard, just tried to do everything, whatever I could to help my team." Doug Christie: "Really we wanted to come out in the 2nd half. We know that we are a good ball club and that we can play. We came out here early. We got warm. We knew that they were going to give a heck of a fight and we just focused in and locked in. We had to get stops. And whatever happened, we weren't going to stop playing." Christie on himself: "Just come out and be aggressive. Just body language, everything. Just come out here. If I could make it to the hole, get to the hole. And just be aggressive all around." Christie on game 5: "It's going to take another effort like this. 48 minutes. This is a team that keeps coming. They keep fighting. And we can't let up. We got to play 48 minutes." Christie: "I think ultimately that is what we wanted to do, coming back into this game, is be aggressive in every aspect - passing the ball, body language, everything. Just be aggressive and that's what everyone did tonight. They came out. Darius came in off the bench and had a real big game. Everybody was rebounding. It was just beautiful." Christie on the last play: "We knew that they would probably have some type of pick-and-roll. We weren't sure, but we just wanted to switch everything and then contest the shot. And Peja came up big again. Steve, you know, he came off and he got a pretty good look at it, but Peja being as big as he is put a hand up and contested the shot and that was big for us. He came up again with another big play at the end." Christie on Songaila's 6th foul: "I said, 'Big fella, you played a great game. There's no need to hang your head. No need to walk around like you did something bad. This is a learning experience. You played a hell of a game. Go over there with pride.'" Christie on if the game was physical: "Ya, it got a little physical, but you have to expect that. This is playoff time. They're going to come and fight as hard as they can and we have to do the same thing. I expect the same thing in game 5." Christie on Dallas' poor shooting: "In their building, you would probably assume that they would probably shoot the ball well, but we try to contest a lot of shots, as many as we could, and tried to push the ball a little bit - still didn't get into the 100s - but when you have tired legs, it's hard to shoot those jump shots. And then after that, we just tried to crash the boards. So a little surprised, but if you're playing good D, it's not as surprising." Christie on the small scuffle with Nowitzki: "That's just basketball. I was trying to pick the ball up and he kept swiping at it and swiping at it, hit me on the arm a couple of times, and at some point you got to say, 'Backup', and that's all it was. Just get off me." Christie on if Dallas was frustrated: "You know, I was so locked into what we needed to do. I would have to say they probably were a little bit, but they had a decent flow. It wasn't as good as it was in game 3, I don't think, but they still had some what of a flow going." Christie on changes from game 3: "We weren't as aggressive as a unit. We weren't talking. We didn't have that same spirit, that same aggressiveness that we had at home. To be a championship team, you can't just play well at home. It's not that way. You're not going to get it done. You have to go into somebody's building and you have to stand up like a man and make a stand. And we didn't do that in game 3. It just didn't happen. And tonight I think that we did that as a unit and I was proud of the guys." Christie on game 5: "Our every plan is to end it. We got to go in there like some hungry animals and we have to attack, attack, attack and play an even better game than we played today." Christie on rebounds: "They really punished us on the boards in the first 3 games all together. They were hitting the boards hard. We knew that we were going to have to get in there and get some rebounds. The big guys, they're boxing out, trying to hold on to their guy, and the little guys were getting the ball. So we had to try to get in there and get some boards. So we knew it was going to be physical. We knew they were going to give us a really good shot. And we took all of those and we still stood strong." Vlade Divac: "It's easy to get better than the other night. When you have a bad game like that, you respond, if you're a good team. The whole team responded. The difference with us and Dallas is we're both good offensive teams, but defensively, we're much better. And we have Peja. He understood that he had to keep shooting because he's not going to miss forever. He started getting hot right on time." Divac on Songaila: "I can't say enough about him. He was everywhere. He did a great job. Not bad for a rookie, eh?" Brad Miller: "They've been beating us up on the boards. We knew we could win this game and take control of this series if we just got in there and worked harder." Anthony Peeler on the low scoring: "From game 1, I knew it would be something like this because everybody is trying to feel each other out in game 1 and just letting the ball fly. But in games 2 and 3 and 4, everybody has been on each other and figuring out each other's offense, so it's starting to be more physical. And today's game was very physical." Don Nelson: "Well now we find ourselves between a rock and a hard place. And a game we certainly played hard in. But there were some factors in the game that just killed us - the free throw, something we shoot as well as anybody in basketball. We avoided to shoot the free throw today and that really hurt us, probably as much as anything. When we struggle to shoot the ball at all and then we missed at the free throw line. And then the discrepancy on the boards really hurt us. We had been a very good rebounding team throughout this series and their size hurt us today, tonight. Those 2 factors, when you shot 34% and shot 60 from the line, you're not going to win many games against a good team. And that really was the bottom line. We hung in there and had a chance, if you would. But it was hard going for us. So anyway, we're going to continue to compete. Certainly our backs are against the wall. This was a game we felt we had to win to stay competitive in this series. And now the only thing left really is to go up there and just worry about one game and not 3 and compete and see what happens, if we can pull one out and maybe get back home. So that's our only hope. You may wonder about Jamison. He didn't come out at halftime. He pulled something in his cheek. I'm not sure exactly how serious, but he was certainly limping in the 2nd half. I thought a very gutsy performance. I didn't think he was going to be able to do much at all, but actually hung in there pretty well for 5 or 6 minutes. Then the more I had him out there, the more he started to limp. And I just thought we should probably go a different way. I didn't want to, whatever it was, injure him any more. So we'll have to see how that is. I thought this was a game in which my rookies played like rookies. But they weren't alone out there. I don't think anybody played well. We did play very hard and I can take a loss as long as we give an effort. And really, that's what happened. We got beat. Who would ever think this was going to turn into a defensive battle, but it kind of has. Both teams were really solid on the defensive end and struggled on the offensive end." Nelson on the last play: "I thought they defended it pretty well. We only had 8 seconds. We ran our strong 2-man game. We really didn't have time to post the mismatch, so they took a gamble and won. I thought they played it well. It was going to be a tough go probably anyway." Nelson on Sacramento's rebounding: "Size more than anything. I thought Miller came in and just walked us under the basket with his size and strength and was a big factor in the 1st half. There were so many misses and they were misses at close range that they got an awful lot of them back. Both teams I thought were moving the ball and running the ball. We both shot 90 shots. But really for us, the free throw was the difference. I can't believe we couldn't make free throws. We've made them all year. And if we didn't lead the league this year, we were 2nd, I think. Those things will happen. Out of our control sometimes, as they say, the free throws." Dirk Nowitzki: "It was a tough time to have one of the worst games of my life." Nowitzki: "It's definitely one of the toughest losses in my life. We had enough chances to win. We just didn't have enough bounces tonight. So many times our offense hasn't really been there." Nowitzki: "This is definitely one of the toughest losses in my life. I feel like I let my team down. I'm a scorer on this team, and I had so many good looks. I tried to rebound and play defense a little, but offense is my strong point." Michael Finley: "It hurt tonight. But as professionals if we want to come back in this series, we have to put this behind us. By losing the game, we made the situation a lot tougher. It's still a doable task, but we just have to stay as positive as we can and just focus on the next game in Sacramento." Finley on the poor shooting: "I can't really put my finger on it. They struggled as well offensively as far as the percentage-wise. But we still had our opportunities. I see here, we missed 13 free throws and that's not our forte, that's one of our strengths as one of the best free throw shooting teams in this league. Tonight we missed 13 and lost by 2. In a nutshell, the game was won right there. Offensively, when you are struggling, you need easy buckets like free throws. And tonight we just didn't have it." Finley on rebounding: "Offensive rebounding-wise it was pretty much even. They had more defensive rebounds because there had more opportunities with us missing as many shots. I think down the stretch, they got some key rebounds that they converted into big plays and ultimately got them a nice comfortable lead. But to say they out-worked us, that's hard for me to say that. I think we played as hard as them. Just that they made key stops and shots at the end when they needed to and we didn't." Finley on if the team is frustrated: "I wouldn't call it frustration. We're just disappointed as a team. But on the same note, I'm positive that we can go in Sacramento and win one. I think if we go up there and play hard and win the game and give us an opportunity to come back here and play game 6, you never know what might happen. We've been in this position before as a team, trying to hold on to a lead series-wise and we know that it's tough. We're the hunter now and we have to go out there and play as if the season is on the line because, believe it or not, if we lose now it's time to go home." Steve Nash on his last shot: "I got something on the target, I just couldn't make it. It just wasn't the shot we wanted. There wasn't a lot of places to go at that point. There was a lot of plays that led up to that play that really caused our demise." Nash on the last play: "They played it really well, they switched it. And there wasn't enough time to get it inside to Dirk." Nash: "We're talking about one play. We didn't shoot the ball well enough from the floor, from the 3-point line, or from the free throw line, and we got out-rebounded badly." Nash on the free throw shooting: "That was unfortunate. It's a frustrating way to lose a game. You can definitely point to that as a big reason why we lost. That was very uncharacteristic." Antoine Walker: "It's tough. It's one of those situations in the playoffs, you've got to make free throws to win. For some reason tonight, it was some tough luck tonight. We played well enough to win. Defensively, we had them under control for pretty much the whole game. Obviously our offense has been our strong point, especially at home, and for our team not to score and miss shots that we usually make - we missed a ton of layups around the basket and them missed free throws - it hurts." Walker: "All 4 games, we've played well enough to win. Just a matter of having some tough luck in a couple of games. Obviously we know they're going to be looking to close us out. We got to come in there with the same attitude hopefully. We got a couple of days to gather ourselves and regroup and come back with the same mental focus that we had in the first 4 games and try to bounce back." Walker: "We got a pretty much veteran group here. They're guys who have been in tough situations. So hopefully we can battle back and make it happen. We can definitely get game 5. We feel very confident that we can win on their home floor. It's a matter of just putting it together for 4 quarters out there, which we haven't done. We can't have any mental lapses in any quarters." Walker on the road: "Obviously we haven't won a lot of games and we've had some tough situations where we haven't played well on the road. But you got to start winning sooner or later. I think we've been in enough situations where we understand what it's going to take to win. Like I said, we've played good basketball against them. Even though we didn't score the ball tonight, we're still stopping them from scoring. So we just got to come out and focus a little bit more and hopefully we can make a few more shots." Walker on Stojakovic: "It's tough. A guy like that that's getting 20, 25 shots a game, it's very difficult to keep him at bay for the whole game. He's their #1 scorer, 2nd scorer in the league. He's going to shoot the basketball and that's the luxury that he has. Every great scorer, they usually have a lot of attempts and if you get enough attempts, you can kind of catch a grove a little bit." Antawn Jamison on game 5: "We've got to suck it up. We just have to have the mind frame that we're not going to come out of there with anything but a win." Marquis Daniels: "I think we just didn't concentrate once we got out there. We just got to step up and knock them down. It's a 2 point game we lost by and we missed 13 free throws. And that's the game right there." Daniels on poor shooting: "I think it's mental. We just got to get mentally tougher down the stretch. We played great D, they played great D. Both of us just kind of struggled shooting the ball tonight. I think it just boiled down to those free throws tonight." Daniels on game 5: "We know there is still a lot left. You just got to go out there and win there and come back here and get another. We know it's not over yet. We just got to go out and play. It's going to be a little harder, that's all." Daniels on the loss: "It's very tough, especially with us being at home, having a good record here. We played hard. Just things happened, like those free throws. That's all that's going to keep going through is free throws." Daniels on game 5: "We got to take it one game at a time. We got to go up to Arco and put together a 4 quarter game. Just concentrate and focus on our whole total game and control everything once we get out there." Josh Howard: "We just have to stay positive. It was a hard loss, but we just have to stay positive and focused." Howard on it being a physical game: "You just have to keep playing. It's part of the game. People are going to talk and do other things, but we have to make sure we go out there and just play the game." Howard on game 5: "We know we can pull out a win if we stay focused. We need to make sure we communicate on defense and stay positive throughout the game." Howard: "We missed a lot of free throws and those shots were big. I think if we would have made our free throws we would have won the game."
