Dallas at Denver (November 21) Dallas started of a nasty scheduling week (2 back-to-backs and 5 games in 7 nights vs playoff caliber opponents) with a very ugly game in Denver. Well, the 1st quarter was good, but the last 3 quarters were nasty. Denver led 13-10 with 5:50 left and Dallas scored the next 18 points to go up 28-13 with a minute remaining as Denver missed their next 8 shots and turned the ball over 3 times. Dallas led 33-18 after 1. Dallas shot 13-23 FG and Denver shot just 8-21 FG. Dallas took their largest lead at 35-18 on a jumper by Erick Dampier 10 seconds into the 2nd quarter. Dallas led 41-26 with 7:50 to go and fell apart as Denver went on a 24-5 monster run, including 11 points by Greg Buckner, over the next 6 1/2 minutes to go up 53-46 with 1:20 minutes left as Dallas shot 2-16 FG during the run. Life got worse for Dallas during the run when Dirk Nowitzki went down with a sprained ankle with 3 minutes left (and the game tied) and he was unable to return. Carmelo Anthony got a slam as the quarter ended to give Denver a 55-49 lead at the half. Denver out-scored Dallas 37-16 in the quarter as Dallas only shot 6-26 FG. Buckner had 14 points and 7 rebounds in the quarter and Anthony had 10 points. Dallas' shooting touch returned during the 3rd quarter, but their defense got worse. Buckner scored the first 4 points of the quarter on layups to give Denver their first double-digit lead. Dallas pulled within 6 points at 67-73 with 3 minutes remaining and Denver then closed the quarter with a 13-3 run, capped by a 3-point play by Buckner, to go up 86-70 after 3. Buckner had 10 points in the quarter and Devin Harris had 11 of Dallas' 21 points in the quarter and the Mavs committed 8 turnovers. Dallas only got as close as 15 points in the 4th quarter and the towel was thrown in midway through the quarter with Dallas down by 19 points. Denver's scrubs had fun and expanded the team's lead during garbage time by scoring 13 straight points as Dallas went scoreless for over 5 1/2 minutes (and their only points in the last 6 minutes of the game came with 13 seconds left). Denver won easily 110-82. Dallas forgot that the game is 48 minutes long, not 12. Dallas shot 56.5% FG, out-rebounded Denver 13-8, and had just 2 turnovers in scoring 33 points in the 1st quarter, but shot just 30.6% FG, was out-rebounded 26-40, and committed 19 turnovers in scoring just 49 points in the last 3 quarters. Give Denver credit for not giving up after going down so big in the 1st quarter, but Dallas didn't offer much resistance the rest of the game. Losing Dirk Nowitzki probably hurt Dallas' chances of regrouping during halftime, but the team did fall apart with him out there during the 2nd quarter. Nowitzki's sprained is listed as mild and the doctors project him to be out 7 to 10 days, but he hopes to return for Friday's game vs Portland. Denver owes big kudos to former Mav Greg Buckner for their comeback. Buck, always a hard worker on defense, showed his offensive skills as well and his rebounding in this game with career highs 28 points including 10-13 FG and 9 rebounds. 24 of his points and 7 of his rebound came in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. He also had 4 steals. Carmelo Anthony had 21 points including 9-14 FG, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists, but also had 5 turnovers. Kenyon Martin had a double-double with 19 points including 7-10 FT and 10 rebounds. He also had 5 assists and 4 turnovers. How bad was Dallas? 5-5 Earl Boykins had a career high 6 rebounds. He also had 10 points and 5 assists. 10 of Rodney White's 11 points came in garbage time. As for the Mavs, they all stunk and I'm not going to waste my time pointing out the individual mis-formances. Quotes Jeff Bzdelik: "Simply can't say enough about the play of Greg Buckner tonight. He gave us a great lift, an unbelievable effort. We were a plus 36 when he was in the game. When he was on the bench I think we were minus 8. That's the kind of impact he had on the basketball game." Bzdelik: "We played with great passion and effort for 3 quarters, but we need to play like that from wire to wire. Great teams and championship teams win on the defensive end. That is where we want to be." Bzdelik: "We were very fortunate because the way we started the basketball game was simply not good." Bzdelik on Buckner: "Just an unbelievable effort from a very hard working young man." Kenyon Martin on Buckner: "That is what it is all about. Steeping up and making plays. He gave us energy. Everyone knows that he can play defense, but is an all around basketball player. This game was huge. We're starting to play together. We need to take care of our home court first. It was away from us, then we got some hands on the ball, some stops, and we hit some big shots." Marcus Camby on Buckner: "We have so many great offensive players on this team. Greg just goes out and plays within the concept of the team and sometimes his offense gets overlooked. But guys who really know the game, really know how important and valuable he is to this team." Camby on Buckner: "He was awesome. He was definitely the MVP out there. I know it feels good to put up big numbers and a career high against your former team. He's known as a defensive player, but tonight he showed his offensive side." Greg Buckner: "Put it on the team. It is about the Nuggets tonight and not about Greg. In the 2nd half Andre came out and played hard, the whole team played harder. No extra motivation playing the Mavericks. We needed the win and played hard. We went on a run when they got out of their zone defense. Dallas plays the best zone in the NBA and that gives a lot of teams problems. You just don't see a lot of good zone. It didn't help their cause that Dirk went out." Buckner: "I think I just shot a lot of layups and you are supposed to hit layups as a professional. That's what happened out there. A guy like Carmelo got me a lot of open shots, and Earl and Andre." Don Nelson: "We went to pieces in the 2nd period and couldn't come out of it. Having no Dirk Nowitzki made it kind of hard to get an offensive flow. We can't afford to lose Dirk. The news on Dirk is not good. I don't know how bad it is, but I know it is not good. We looked like a terrible team tonight. I tried to play Cal Booth, because he will have to play. He had a bad game and wasn't much of a factor anyways. We have to find a replacement somewhere. We cant catch a break on injuries." Nelson: "We went to pieces in the 2nd period and never could come out of it. We needed a boost in the 2nd half. Of course, we had no Nowitzki and it made it kind of hard to get an offensive flow. We looked like a terrible team tonight. We turned it over, didn't guard, didn't rebound, and didn't do very much right at all." Nelson on Nowitzki's ankle: "We don't know how bad, but it is not good. We can't catch a break with injuries. We have done well up to this point, but like I said before, the one guy we can't afford to lose is Nowitzki and now we have lost him for a while." Dirk Nowitzki on his ankle: "I rolled it pretty good. We'll wait and see what happens after the MRI." Jerry Stackhouse: "This is a tough one to swallow because we had momentum early. We lost our composure. We're better than that, no matter who is out." Jerry Stackhouse on losing Nowitzki: "Everybody's got to pick it up. We have to switch it up a little bit. Obviously Dirk was a big part of our offense, but we don't need to reinvent the wheel. We had a 20 point lead and lost our composure. Hopefully we can regroup and tomorrow is another day." Devin Harris: "Shots weren't falling tonight. We couldn't sustain the energy we started with, so it's on to the next one." Harris on losing Nowitzki: "It makes us small, but gives us a chance to run more breaks and forces us guards to rebound more. We started real well and started to decrease, but really couldn't recover." Kevin Garnett was playing with a sore shoulder. Despite missing their superstar, Dallas came out strong and never trailed in the 1st quarter. Dallas led 13-10 with 6:40 left and went on a 14-2 run to go up 27-12 with 2:50 remaining. Minnesota did close the quarter with an 8-2 run, capped by a layup by Trenton Hassell at the quarter buzzer. Dallas led 29-20 after 1. Josh Howard had 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Both teams shot around 50% FG in the 1st quarter and both teams' shooting went down the drain in the 2nd quarter. Despite that, Dallas continued to hold a single-digit lead, no larger than 9 points and no smaller than 3 points. Minnesota scored 6 straight points to pull within 36-39 with 2:45 to go. Dallas led 43-40 at the half. Dallas shot 7-24 FG and Minnesota shot 8-25 FG in the 2nd quarter. Dallas opened the 3rd quarter with a 12-1 run to go up 55-41 with 8:15 to go. Minnesota then went on a 16-3 run, capped by a 3-point play by Garnett, to pull within 57-58 with 2:50 left. Consecutive layups by Garnett near the quarter's end gave Minnesota a 62-60 lead with 30 seconds left - their first lead of the game. 2 free throws by Howard with 8 seconds left tied the game at 62-62 after 3. Dallas scored the first 3 points of the 4th quarter to take a small lead. A 3-pointer by Eddie Griffin tied the game at 67-67 with 9:30 remaining and Dallas then scored the next 12 points to go up 79-67 with 4:30 to go - the run ended on a technical foul for Garnett after Howard had an isolated one-on-one play against Garnett and blew past Garnett for the layup and Garnett gave Howard a little shove after the bucket. However, the youngsters of Howard, Devin Harris, and Marquis Daniels started making mistakes on defense and passing up open shots and missing shots and Minnesota went on a 10-2 run (that included 2 3-point plays - if you make a mistake, don't compounded by giving them an extra free throw) to pull within 77-81 with 2:40 left. The teams traded misses over next minute and Jerry Stackhouse hit 1-2 free throws (for just his 4th point of the game) with 1:30 remaining. Minnesota took the missed free throw and ran up the court and Sam Cassell got the quick layup to make it a 3 point game at 79-82 with 1:25 to go. Daniels missed a layup and Alan Henderson's putback attempt was blocked by Garnett and Minnesota again pushed the ball and Latrell Sprewell missed a jumper and Garnett missed the putback and Dallas ran the other way with a 3-on-2 break, but instead of slowing things down to calm down or going in for the layup attempt, Daniels at the last moment made a pass to an unsuspecting Howard and the ball went through his hands out of bounds with 48 seconds left. Minnesota again pushed the ball and Wally Szczerbiak got a layup from a nice pass by Garnett with 44 seconds left. Howard drove and as the defense collapsed, he passed out to an open Harris, but his 3-point attempt was a tad short with 22 seconds left. After running a number of seconds off the clock trying to figure out what they were going to do, Minnesota called timeout with 11 seconds left and down by 1. Minnesota got the ball into Garnett in the post and as he made his move, Henderson grabbed him across the arm. Garnett hit both free throws with 5.9 seconds left to give Minnesota a 1 point lead. After a Dallas timeout, the ball was swung around from Howard to an open Harris to a covered Stackhouse and Stackhouse had to try to force the shot, but Hassell was able to deflected the shot and time expired. Minnesota won 83-82. This is what you call a heart breaker. Minnesota knows they got away with one and stole the game. I feel so bad for the kids. The 3 youngsters of Devin Harris, Josh Howard, and Marquis Daniels played so well for so long that they earned the win, but were done in by youthful mistakes in the last few minutes. The 3 were awesome against a strong team. Not only was Dallas playing without their superstar and star, but Jerry Stackhouse and Jason Terry had lousy games - yet the Mavs led all but 26 seconds of the game. Towards the end of the game, the Mavs were reluctant to shot in passing up some good looks and ended up with poorer looks with the shot clock on their back and weren't as quick to get back on defense as Minnesota was pushing the ball and looking for quick shots. Dallas did not have a field goal in the last 3:30 of the game as Minnesota closed the game with an 11-1 run. For the game, neither team shot well as Minnesota shot 41% (34-83) FG including 1-12 3-pointers and Dallas shot 35.9% (33-92) FG including 3-13 3-pointers (and the shooting was actually worse when you consider that both teams shot 50% FG in the 1st quarter). Minnesota did have 10 more rebounds than Dallas did, though both had 16 offensive rebounds, but Minnesota had 10 more turnovers that Dallas. Dallas only had 8 turnovers, but it was the turnover with 48 seconds left that hurt the most. Though Kevin Garnett's numbers are eye-popping, his on-court performance was not as astounding. He was good, but he wasn't great and missed a number of shots that he normally makes. He had 21 points, 17 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 blocks, and 5 turnovers in playing 39 minutes with a sore shoulder. Sam Cassell had 16 points, but did not have a single assist and had 4 turnovers. Troy Hudson was the only other Wolf in double-digits with 11 points. He also had 5 assists. Latrell Sprewell struggled with just 9 points including 4-13 FG. Eddie Griffin did have 13 rebounds, but only shot 1-8 FG during his 20 minutes on the court. Josh Howard was stellar. Not only did he have 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals, but he played good defense when he was on Kevin Garnett. The 2 were exchanging words and twice Garnett went toe-to-toe with Howard to try to intimidate him, but Howard didn't back down and retained his focus. His one-on-one move against the MVP was awesome to see. Devin Harris played wonderful. His numbers were not eye-popping, but his play and defense was. He twice picked Sam Cassell's pocket and was part of the reason that Cassell did not have a good game. Harris had 14 points, 3 assists, and 3 blocks. Marquis Daniels did struggle with his shot, but played well otherwise. He had 11 points including 5-18 FG, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. It was due to those 3 players that this game was not the blowout many thought it would be going into the game. Erick Dampier had 11 points and 9 rebounds including 5 offensive. Calvin Booth started and played well early - on offense and on defense against Garnett as Booth had 4 points and 2 rebounds while Garnett had 2 points and 1 rebound in the 1st quarter. He finished with 8 points and 3 rebounds in 25 minutes. Alan Henderson had 10 points and 8 rebounds, but made the mistake of fouling Garnett when he was shooting at the end of the game. Jerry Stackhouse had a terrible outing when the team was expecting him to step up with just 4 points including 1-9 FG and 5 rebounds in 28 minutes. Jason Terry also did not play well and Don Nelson went with the rookie, who had earned his court time. Terry had 2 points on 1-6 FG, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists in just 16 minutes. Quotes Flip Saunders: "It is one of those games where they are in their locker room trying to figure out how they loss. We are in here trying to figure out how we won. We didn't play very well. I thought overall KG was used second hand. Trenton was good defensively and Eddie did a good job on the board. It was just one of those grind it out kind of games. We told the guys that the Mavs were going to play hard and play with emotion even though Dirk was not there. To our credit we didn't get too frustrated and we kept our composure and made some plays down the stretch." Saunders on the start of the game: "Mentally we weren't in the game. We call our first play and Sam just dribbles down and shoots it. You can't do that. That just tells the rest of the team, what's going on? We've got to fix it." Kevin Garnett: "It's a big win because the Mavericks are going to be a team to be reckoned with in the West, with Dirk or without him. It's an emotional win. It felt like a playoff atmosphere in the 2nd half." Garnett: "Making the free throws was all confidence. I had missed a couple. I'm just giving what I've got." Garnett: "I've got a bum shoulder, bad knees - I'm giving it what I've got. I wasn't happy about missing those earlier free throws, but this time I took my time and made them." Garnett: "Trent Hassell made a big, big defensive stop at the end." Sam Cassell: "Basketball is such a strange game. How long have you heard me say that? Basketball is a strange sport. If you find the answer, let me know. We've got to keep working and not let anyone in this locker room get discouraged. We've won 4 out of 5 games and slowly but surely it coming once we all get on the same page. Right now our defense is not that bad. Offensively is where we are struggling." Cassell on if the win was better as it should have been a loss: "No doubt about it. To win a championship, these are kinds of games you must win down 8 or 9 points with 3 minutes to go. We just toughed it out and gave ourselves a chance to win and Kevin made 2 crucial free throws." Cassell: "To win a championship, these are the kinds of game you must win. We just hung on. We said, 'Let's put our hard hats on and see what happens.'" Trenton Hassell on defending the last shot: "I kind of knew they were going to come at me with Stackhouse. My focus was just to stay in front of him, force him to shoot a jumper and contest it." Don Nelson: "The season is full of good wins and tough losses. Take a guess as to which this one was. I thought this was a game we could have won, should have won. We had a couple of terrible turnovers and mistakes at the end that cost us the game. We did have a foul to give at the end and it was instructed that when Garnett got it to give it. For whatever reason, Henderson said he was trying to give it, but you don't want to give it when the man is shooting." Nelson: "It was a comedy of errors at the end of the game." Nelson: "I was really proud of the way we played. We really stepped it up and played hard after an embarrassing loss to Denver. The guys really deserved to win this one, but you don't always get what you deserve in life." Nelson on Harris not shooting one the last play: "He's a young player. We tried to execute that all through training camp. We did have a missed assignment on it, but it wasn't Devin's. Anybody who is open can shoot it. He tried to make the next pass, which was the guy we were looking for. Nobody was more wide open than Devin. Anybody on the floor who has a shot can shoot in those situations." Nelson on Stackhouse's and Terry's performances: "You have to be a little disappointed with that." Nelson on Howard's play against Garnett: "I loved it. To challenge one of the best and beat him, that ought to do wonders. He's a rare guy because he can guard anybody. And if they can't guard him, then you have a special piece. Right now, they can guard him, but he's getting better every day." Dirk Nowitzki on Howard: "Josh played his game. He's not scared of anything. He's a tough kid, one of our best defenders. He made big shots tonight and almost won the game for us." Nowitzki on his ankle: "It's feeling all right now. After I did it, it felt the worst it has in a couple of years." Erick Dampier: "This is a game we should have won, but we let it go down the drain. Even without Dirk and Finley, we still have enough talent to compete and win every night." Josh Howard: "It was our game all the way down to the end." Howard on his play against Garnett: "I'm a 2nd year player, I'm new to this. It's just competitive nature. Nothing wrong with that." Howard on his play against Garnett: "I had to let him know I'm young and I can still move. That's the MVP of the league. The guy came out of high school 10 years ago. 10 years ago, I was 14. For me to do those things I did, that helps." Devin Harris: "We did all the necessary things to win the game, but we couldn't get it done. We made a couple of mental mistakes and that cost us the game. They made some very tough shots. We came back in the 4th, but it wasn't enough and it was a tough loss for us." Harris on the last shot: "With us being hurt, we don't have that marquee guy and I thought Stack did a great job of getting open, but it just didn't fall for us. They've got Garnett who made the plays down the stretch." Harris on the last play: "I saw Stack at the last second, and that's the kind of guy you want to give it to. It crossed my mind to shoot it. Close losses always sting more, especially when you're on top like that. With the guys out, we need this win." Harris on the next game vs San Antonio: "It's another tough game. We just got to get ready for it. I don't think we played great tonight. We just need to bring that same type of energy as we did tonight to San Antonio and we'll be fine." Alan Henderson: "Any time you lose it stings, but I knew we had a foul to give and I should have gave it earlier. By the time they called it he into his move so I just whish I would have gave that foul earlier." Henderson: "We just needed to win that one. I hate that I made a mistake down the stretch. I should have fouled him earlier." Henderson: "They have an excellent team and they made some plays down the stretch and we made some mistakes that cost us. We just all have to try to play a little bit more solid."
