Erick Dampier and Jerry Stackhouse have re-joined practices and both hope to return to the court during the road trip (this week). Schedule change: The April 3 game at Cleveland has been changed from 12:00 pm to 2:30; it will still be broadcast on ABC. Dallas at Sacramento (March 24) It was the 2nd night of a back-to-back for Dallas and the Mavs shot poorly in the 1st quarter. Dallas did lead 7-4 with 8:45 remaining, but Sacramento then went on a 17-4 run to go up 21-11 with 3 minutes left. A 3-pointer by Peja Stojakovic gave Sacramento their largest lead at 12 points with 30 seconds left, but Devin Harris hit a jumper with a few seconds left in the quarter. Sacramento led 28-18 after 1. Stojakovic had 14 points including 4-5 FG. Dallas shot just 7-23 FG in the quarter. As has been the trend lately, Dallas came alive in the 2nd quarter. After Reggie Evans got a bucket to open the 2nd quarter, Dallas then went on a 21-4 run to go 39-34 with 6 minutes to go - Dirk Nowitzki had 9 points and Keith Van Horn had 8 points during the run. A 3-pointer by Josh Howard gave Dallas their largest lead at 52-44 with 2:35 left. Dallas led 58-51 at the half. Nowitzki had 15 points on 7-8 FG and Van Horn had 10 points in the quarter. Dallas shot 17-23 FG in out-scoring Sacramento 40-23 in the 2nd quarter. For the half, Dallas shot 53% FG including 5-6 3-pointers and 3-4 FT. Sacramento shot 44% FG including 4-7 3-pointers and 11-12 FT. Dallas' shooting slacked off in the 3rd quarter, but the team was able to hang on to a single-digit lead the entire quarter. Only 2 buckets (both by Sacramento) were scored over the last 3 minutes of the 3rd quarter. Dallas led 76-75 after 3. The teams traded leads a couple of times to open the 4th quarter. Dallas led 80-79 with 10 minutes to go and Sacramento went on an 11-2 run to go up 90-82 with 7:20 left as Dallas missed their next 5 shots. A jumper by Kenny Thomas gave Sacramento a 97-86 lead with 5 minutes remaining. A 3-pointer by Nowitzki pulled Dallas within 95-101 with 2:50 left. Sacramento shot 2-3 FT (1 technical) to go up by 8 with 1:45 left. Devin Harris nailed a 3-pointer to pull Dallas within 98-103 with 1:35 to go. Stojakovic missed late in the shot clock, but Harris missed a layup with 1:05 remaining. Mike Bibby turned the ball over with 45 seconds left, but Dallas missed on a quick shot attempt and the Mavs started intentionally fouling and the Kings hit 6-6 Ft to seal the win. Sacramento won 109-101. It was entertaining game with a 2-man game between Stojakovic vs Nowitzki. Dallas lost because Sacramento picked up their defense in the 2nd half and Dallas' shooting went completely south. Dallas shot 53% FG in the 1st half and only 33% FG in the 2nd half, including 9-28 FG in the 4th quarter. For the game, Dallas shot 43.5% (40-92) FG including 8-15 3-pointers and Sacramento shot 46.2% (36-78) FG including 9-14 3-pointers. Dallas shot 13-18 FT and Sacramento shot 28-30 FT. Despite scoring over 100 points, Dallas only had 15 assists. Both teams were fairly clean with the ball as Dallas had 10 turnovers and Sacramento had 11 turnovers. Dallas lost despite killing Sacramento in the paint in out-scoring the Kings 40-16. The Dallas-Sacramento series ended with Dallas winning 3 and Sacramento winning 1. Peja Stojakovic had a hot night with 38 points on 9-13 FG, 6-8 3-pointers, and 14-14 FT. He also had 9 rebounds. Cuttino Mobley had 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. Kenny Thomas had 15 points and 8 rebounds. Mike Bibby struggled most of the game, but did score 7 points in the 4th quarter. He had 17 points including 6-18 FG and 8 assists. Brian Skinner had 6 points on 3-4 FG and 8 rebounds and Daruis Songaila had 6 points on 1-5 FG and 4-4 FT and 7 rebounds. And the other side of the matchup had Dirk Nowitzki racking up 35 points on 13-24 FG and 7-9 FT, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. He only shot 3-9 FG in the 4th quarter, though. The other 4 starters combined for just 28 points including 11-37 FG. Michael Finley was the only other starter in double-digits with 11 points on 4-10 FG. Jason Terry had a lousy outing and sat most of the 4th quarter. He had 4 points on 2-10 FG, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists in 32 minutes. Josh Howard had 8 points including 3-9 FG and 10 rebounds including 4 offensive. Shawn Bradley had 5 points including 2-8 FG and 5 rebounds in 19 minutes. Keith Van Horn had 16 points and 3 rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench. Devin Harris got Terry's 4th quarter minutes and provided a spark. He had 16 points including 7-11 FG and 2 assists in 16 minutes. Alan Henderson had 6 points and 6 rebounds including 4 offensive. Marquis Daniels missed all 3 shots he attempted and had 3 rebounds in 14 minutes. Quotes Rick Adelman: "I believe we've been swept before during the regular season and done well in the playoffs. I thought we should have won the game here last time. If we have everyone healthy we can compete with this team fairly well. We have a hard time guarding them but they have a hard time guarding us too." Adelman: "We held them to 18 points in the 1st quarter, then they got 40 in the 2nd, and so many of them were unnecessary. They got 6 in like the last [1:21 of the half] because of mental mistakes. But we played a lot harder and smarter in the 2nd half and made them take shots under pressure." Adelman on Nowitzki: "He just makes shots. He's such a good shooter so that makes him a handful. Give our guys credit, they stayed with it and had a great 2nd half." Adelman on Stojakovic: "We don't need him to score 38 every night but we've needed him to be aggressive like tonight. Hopefully, this will jump start him." Adelman on Stojakovic: "He was very, very aggressive from the beginning. He got 3 or 4 of those rebounds early, and he was pursuing the ball, not just standing there. That shows he was aggressive." Adelman on Stojakovic: "He just looked so much like the Peja of last year tonight. He wasn't just standing out there. He was pursuing the ball. It was great to see." Adelman on Stojakovic: "He looked so much like Peja from last year, except maybe for the 45-footer. That [showed] a little more confidence than I thought he had." Peja Stojakovic: "I just have to keep being aggressive. Keep shooting the ball and maybe be a little more aggressive taking the ball to the hole and getting to the free throw line. We, as a team, have to play like that. Play hard all 48 minutes." Stojakovic: "The basket felt like a swimming pool. I know I've been inconsistent lately, but you just have to keep playing through it. I was just being aggressive from the first minute. ... I know I was struggling, but I couldn't sit home and cry. I had to play and get back in shape." Stojakovic: "I kept telling you guys that I had to play my way through the struggles. What else could I do? Sit at home? I had to get back into shape, stay on the court, and keep working." Stojakovic: "We're still learning each other. We've just got to try to play together and trust each other on both ends of the floor. Hopefully we'll get Bobby [Jackson] and Brad [Miller] back for the playoffs." Stojakovic on the new players: "I think the guys are understanding their own role. I think defensively we are doing a good job. No matter what we do offensively, we've got to bring the energy on the defensive end. It feels good. Dallas is a very good team. They've added some good players and they're playing good basketball." Mike Bibby: "We played well in the 1st quarter. We let them score too many 2nd shots in the 2nd quarter. But we hung in there and played together in the end and we did what it took to get the win. The main thing is helping each other. A lot of their points were off us hugging our man and them getting to the basket for a wide open shot. We tried to cut that out in the 2nd half." Bibby on Stojakovic: "He really kept us in the game. He was hitting the 3. He really kept us in there." Bibby: "We'll be all right. I don't want to jump too far ahead. We've got a game in Denver. We've got to take care of it and take them one by one." Avery Johnson: "This is a tough loss for us. I take my hat off to the Kings. They really had a terrific 2nd half. We gave up like 58 points there in the 2nd half, which is too much. We played a really good 1st half so I think it was a tale of 2 halves." Johnson: "It is a missed opportunity because defensively we were just not good in the 2nd half. We gave up 58 points in the 2nd half and 34 of those in the 4th quarter. That's inexcusable." Johnson: "I just thought our 1st half defense was good, but the 2nd half it wasn't. Again, they got to the free throw line 30 times and made 28 of them. We couldn't get as much as we wanted to, but that's the way it goes sometimes. There are no excuses. They guys played hard. I thought they really competed. Our energy was really suspect. I tried to get Dirk out of the game and give him a rest, but we just couldn't keep him out. Josh was in foul trouble so then we had to go big. Again, we played well and won the season series against them. They came out in a must win situation and they deserve to win the game." Johnson on not playing Terry late in the game: "JT just didn't have it. We wanted to get some energy out there and Devin really played well. [Harris] missed a little chippy right there at the end that could have helped, but I'm really happy with the way the rookie played this whole road trip." Johnson on Harris: "Devin really played well for us. He missed the little chip there at the end that could of helped, but I'm really pleased with the rookie this whole road trip. I thought he did a nice job. He's growing, he's confident, and he did some nice things defensively too." Dirk Nowitzki: "I thought the 1st half we were right there where we wanted it. We were up a couple of points and had a good 2nd quarter. We played some good defense, I thought, and really executed well on the offense, so the 2nd quarter we really played our style basketball. I just think we didn't get enough stops down the stretch to win the game. Peja was hot from all over. We shouldn't lose him on rotations. That's the one guy you should never lose. I don't know. He just got hot and made shots from all over the court. I don't think offensively we were great, especially in the 3rd quarter. We just couldn't score and they would go make their runs. That was the game right there." Nowitzki: "I think they're a lot tougher [since trading Chris Webber]. Now they're a lot more physical." Nowitzki: "Defensively, they are a lot tougher than they used to be. They showed it in the 2nd half and got some big stops in the 3rd quarter and down the stretch, so you've got to give them credit." Nowitzki on Stojakovic: "Peja was on fire from all over. I don't think we should lose him in transition. That's the one guy we shouldn't lose. He went right to the 3-point line and was wide open. Once a shooter like that gets hot, you're in trouble." Nowitzki on his flagrant foul: "That was a joke. Obviously I fouled him, but just because he falls into the stands doesn't make it a flagrant. It was a tough night for the officials, but we still should have won the game." Nowitzki on his flagrant: "That was a joke. I thought I was on the side of him. I even hit the ball a little bit. Just because he falls hard does not make it a flagrant foul." Nowitzki on Thomas' flagrant: "The flagrant called on him was a joke too." Jason Terry: "We missed a lot of easy baskets and Sacramento played well tonight and I give them credit. Peja Stojakovic came out on a mission. He made some big shots that made them feel comfortable and feel good about themselves. Even though we had the lead at the half, they had the momentum. It's just a situation where it's just tough to beat a team 4 times, but there's a possible match-up with them in the playoffs. It's going to be a good battle." Josh Howard on the officiating: "It's the same bull again. I've got to keep playing ball. I don't know what it is. If I could tell you, I would." Cleveland got a scare when LeBron James went down 3 minutes into the game with a sprained ankle. He was able to return (and wouldn't have missed any game time if not for the fact that he was all ready subbed out) and played the rest of the game. A 3-point play by Alan Henderson gave Dallas a 26-20 lead with 2:30 to go, but Cleveland then scored the next 7 points to go up 27-26 with 40 seconds left. A 3-pointer by Michael Finley and jumper by James capped the quarter scoring. The game was tied 29-29 after 1. Finley had 11 points. A jumper by Keith Van Horn and a 3-point play by Marquis Daniels gave Dallas a 39-33 lead with 9:15 remaining. Dallas led 42-37 with 7:30 to go and Dallas went on a 9-1 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Finley, to go up 51-38 with 5:50 left. Jason Terry drained a 3-pointer near the quarter's end and Dallas led 66-50 at the half. Van Horn had 12 points and Terry had 10 points in the 2nd quarter as Dallas out-scored Cleveland 37-21. Dallas shot 14-22 FG including 4-5 3-pointers in the quarter. For the half, Dallas shot 57% FG including 8-10 3-pointers and Cleveland shot 44% FG including 2-4 3-pointers. Dallas continued to roll in scoring the first 4 points of the 3rd quarter to take their first 20 point lead. Cleveland did score the next 5 points, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the game. Dallas led 72-57 with 6:50 remaining and scored the next 10 points, including consecutive 3-pointers by Finley, to go up 82-57 with 3:45 to go. Lucious Harris nailed a 3-pointer at the quarter buzzer. Dallas led 89-66 after 3. Cleveland only shot 6-19 FG in the 3rd quarter. Dallas scored 10 straight points, starting and ending with a 3-pointer, to take their first 30 point lead at 101-70 with 9 minutes left. Cleveland would get no closer than 26 points the rest of the game as Dallas' lead was mostly in the 30s. Dallas won 117-86. It was a surprising blowout for Dallas. The 31 point margin was both Dallas' largest win of the season and Cleveland's largest loss. The stunning factor of the game was Dallas' 3-point shooting. It was raining in the AAC. Dallas shot an amazing 14-18 3-pointers - which was a better shooting percentage than they shot from the free throw line. From the field, Dallas shot 55% (44-80) FG and Cleveland shot 42.1% (32-76) FG including 3-5 3-pointers. Dallas shot 15-20 FT and Cleveland shot 19-24 FT. Dallas had 26 assists and Cleveland had 19 assists. It was block fest too as Dallas had 12 blocks and Cleveland had 9 blocks. No question who the player of the game was. Michael Finley was on fire from outside. He only shot 1-6 2-pointers, but was a perfect 8-8 3-pointers [wow!] - only one shy of the NBA record for most 3s made without a miss. He had 26 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Keith Van Horn also played well (despite having 3 of Dallas' 4 missed 3-pointers :) ) and had 23 points including 9-16 FG, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists in 26 minutes. Dirk Nowitzki had a poor outing from the field, but was strong on the boards and blocks. Not all of his shooting problems was his fault as he drove a lot and got fouled with no calls [the officiating was very poor with lots of non-calls both ways, and then they'd turn around and call something ticky-tacky]. He had 11 points including 3-12 FG, 14 rebounds (all defensive), and 5 blocks. Jason Terry recovered from his poor outing in the previous game to chip in 14 points and 8 assists. Devin Harris had 12 points including 5-7 FG and 5 rebounds. Josh Howard had 11 points. Shawn Bradley had a nice outing with most of his production coming in the 1st half (he didn't play much in the 2nd half probably due to Cleveland not playing Ilgauskas much in the 2nd half). He had 6 points on 3-3 FG, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 15 minutes. Marquis Daniels had 7 points and 4 assists and Alan Henderson had 5 points and 5 rebounds including 4 offensive. King James had a fairly quite night and sat the entire 4th quarter. He had 19 points (and no spectacular dunks, but some pretty and tough shots), 4 rebounds, and 6 assists in 36 minutes. Drew Gooden had 16 points and 8 rebounds. Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 13 points including 4-10 FG, 6 rebounds including 4 offensive, and 4 blocks in 26 minutes. 10 of Anderson Varejao's 14 points came in the 4th quarter. He shot 7-9 FG, most of them from the outside. Ira Newble had 9 points and 6 rebounds. Eric Snow missed both shots he attempted and had 4 rebounds and 3 assists in 21 minutes. Quotes Avery Johnson: "This was a really good win for us coming off a tough loss in Sacramento. The guys really tried and had good energy tonight. We caught Cleveland on not one of their better nights. We know that it will be much tougher when we play them again on Sunday. I thought our guys competed and we made some shots. Obviously any time Finley can make 8 3s, we should have a good night offensively. Van Horn has continued to provide some really good defense for us. I thought he battled defensively and made some shots offensively but I'm really excited about the way he's playing defense. We needed to play well before we embark on this 4 game road trip." Johnson on if he was more impressed by the offense or defense: "I think a little bit of both. Obviously, I would say defense first but we scored the ball really well tonight, which is good because I'm excited about our 26 assists. We swung the ball side-to-side twice as much as we did the last game and still got the ball around to the guys who were feeling it." Johnson on James: "LeBron is a tough cover, man, is he a tough cover. He's just so big and athletic. We just tried to make it difficult on him and fortunately, he just missed some shots." Johnson on Finley: "I just think his energy was good and his body looked strong. We just really tried to keep it simple for him. He just really tried to step up. I think when he doesn't play well, he's as hard on himself as anybody. I think it was good for him, especially at home and heading into the road trip." Michael Finley: "I had good looks at the basket. My teamates were finding me in transition and giving me good opportunities to make the most of those shots. They were shots that I've been missing in the past and fortunately I was hitting them tonight." Finley: "I'm just trying to win. I'm going to do whatever it takes for the team to win." Finley on his recent struggles: "I'm fine. A lot of people make a big deal out of my offensive game, and it deserves that. As I go, sometimes the team goes. The team needs me to be offensively aggressive. I take it upon myself to do that, and tonight was one of those times." Finley: "We're in the playoffs. We're not one of those teams fighting in these last 13 games to make the playoffs. It's good for us to have a solidified playoff spot and hopefully, maybe that can go up." Jason Terry on the 3-pointers: "Yeah, we shot the ball real well from the perimeter tonight. We can attribute that to just staying focused and knowing that we were due for one of these shooting nights like this." Terry on Finley: "Mike had it going. Mike caught the ball in rhythm, he didn't hesitate and his legs looked good. He was real fluent out there." Terry: "We just needed to bounce back from that Sacramento loss. Guys were down a little bit, but we came out tonight full of energy and the crowd gave us the lift we needed. It was a good all around performance." Terry: "In the 2nd quarter we just wanted to stay aggressive and attack the basket. Keith was doing a great job of catching the ball early in transition and driving and putting pressure on the defense. I just tried to do the same thing, get in the lane and create for others. Things just started to open up and we were getting stops on the other end." Keith Van Horn: "I've just been going out there trying to be aggressive. When I see my openings, I try to take advantage of them. I just play within the concept of this team and how we play basketball. It's been working out for us and I'm just going to try to continue doing that." Josh Howard on defending James: "We did a great job on him with the help from my teammates. We held him to 7-17 [FG] and took him out of his rhythm." Howard on James spraining his ankle: "He was still quick, still explosive. Our guys stepped up to challenge him." Devin Harris : "We haven't shot the ball as well as we've wanted to as we did at the beginning of the season, but hopefully we can carry this shooting night over to the next game." Harris on his play in the recent games: "It's been good. It's been consistent. I'm just trying to make the most of my opportunities and I finally found my shot. It went hiding for awhile, but it came back and being able to penetrate and finish has been a big help." Harris on getting open looks: "Ball movement, penetration, and getting out in transition. We had good ball movement, making sure that everyone is touching it once and that provided a lot of good looks." Harris on Finley: "When it rains, it pours. When somebody's going like that, you feed him. You get him the ball however you can." Brendan Malone: "I thought we were very competitive in the 1st quarter. Then when they got into their running game, they started shooting 3s and we were getting sucked in at times. Finley was also making shots with a hand in his face. They just kept on raining 3s the whole game. At the end of the 3rd quarter and beginning of the 4th quarter, I decided to try and scramble the game up by going to a small lineup with Varejao at the center spot. He had his career-high 14 points and he played well. The reason I went small was to scramble the game because at that juncture, being down by 24 going into the 4th quarter, I didn't think we had enough energy to get back with a big lineup." Malone: "We had a hand in Finley's face, and he still made them." Malone on any positives: "That we played well in the 1st quarter. That when we do execute, we can compete. I think when we don't execute and don't get down and play some defense; in the 2nd quarter I thought we didn't adhere to the game plan of staying home on certain players. We just have to play for 48 minutes. This is a downer, a big downer. We just have to stay positive and come back and play against New Orleans on Monday." Malone: "I'm concerned about how we'll respond and play on Monday. After getting kicked tonight, it's a very deflating loss. I just hope that we can get these guys back up. It's going to be difficult. We need some leadership in the locker room. This is a big downer." LeBron James on if it was one of Cleveland's poorest performances: "I don't think it was. When a team shoots 14-18 and one individual is 8-8 from the 3-point line, hands up or no hands up, they were making all their shots. We didn't execute on offense like we are capable, but they shot the ball so well and it was just one of those nights where they weren't missing." James on if he's concerned about how the team will respond to the loss: "You have to be after a loss like this. You have to be concerned. I am happy that we have one day to prepare for New Orleans. Try to come in there with a positive attitude and a bite down attitude to try and get a win." James: "Right now we're not in the class of a Dallas, San Antonio, or Detroit. We have to fight to try to make the playoffs. We have to execute. We have to play basketball. It's all about a positive attitude." James on trying to stop Finley: "I was putting up two hands and blowing on his face. I was trying everything. He was in a groove tonight. When a guy is shooting like that, it doesn't matter what you try to do on him." James on his ankle: "I was still attacking. Sometimes it stopped me from running a lot of plays and cutting off screens. It's a little sore right now. I have 2 days to get ready for [New Orleans]. I'll be all right." James on his ankle: "It's a little sore, but I have 2 days [before the next game]. Our chances of winning are very slim with me off the court, so I tried to play through it." James on playing despite spraining his ankle: "Our chances of winning with me off the court are very slim. I just try to fight through it." Zydrunas Ilgauskas: "This team is going through a tough time right now. It could go either way. We are either going to pull it together and play the remaining 15 games that we have left with a sense of urgency or this thing can really pile up on us like it has been because the schedule is not going to get any easier." Ilgauskas: "We are not playing as well as we were before the All-Star break - that's just obvious. You can pick any area - the defense or the offense execution. We are not doing a good job. Against a team like Dallas, even with Dirk not having a big night, they ran us out of the building." Ilgauskas: "This team is going through a tough time right now. It's not going to get any easier, either. I just think we're not playing well right now - that's the bottom line. If we play like this at home, we're not going to be able to win, either. Obviously it's a lot tougher on the road when you're not playing well."
