Game 1: Dallas at Phoenix (May 9) Dallas spotted the Suns the first 8 points of the the game, capped by a 3-pointer by Shawn Marion, as the Mavs did not get on the board until 9:50 to go. Dallas could get no closer than 4 points the rest of the quarter and Phoenix's lead got no larger than 9 points (once, which was answered by a Jerry Stackhouse 3-pointer). Phoenix led 29-22 after 1. Amare Stoudemire had 15 points. Phoenix shot 7-8 FT (all by Stoudemire) and Dallas shot 0-1 FT [not an indication of the officiating as Phoenix was the much more aggressive team]. Joe Johnson opened the 2nd quarter with a 3-pointer to give Phoenix their first double-digit lead at 32-22 with 11:30 left. Dallas did score the next 4 points to pull within 26-32 with 10:25 remaining, but Phoenix then went on a 12-2 run to go up 44-28 with 7:50 to go. Phoenix's lead remained in the teens the rest of the quarter as Dallas could get no closer than 11 points. A bucket by Steve Nash gave Phoenix their largest lead at 63-45 with 22 seconds to go, but Stackhouse was fouled in the last second of the quarter after getting an offensive rebound and his 2 free throws capped the quarter scoring. Phoenix led 63-47 at the half. Stoudemire had 10 points in the 2nd quarter. Phoenix shot 13-21 FG including 4-7 3-pointers in the 2nd quarter. In addition to his 25 1st half points, Stoudemire also had 9 rebounds. For the half, Phoenix shot 55% FG, 6-10 3-pointers, and 11-14 FT. Dallas shot 42.5% FG, 3-7 3-pointers, and 4-6 FT. Phoenix scored 9 straight points to push their lead into the 20s at 74-51 with 8:30 remaining. After the teams traded 2 points, Dallas then put together their first run of the game in scoring the next 7 points, capped by a 3-pointer by Jason Terry, to pull within 60-76 with 6:55 left. After the teams traded 2 points, Dallas tried to defend with the zone and Phoenix responded with a 3-pointer. Stackhouse hit a jumper and Dallas again tried the zone and Phoenix again killed it with a 3-pointer and that ended Dallas trying the zone. After the teams traded possessions, another Phoenix 3-pointer put their lead back at 23 points at 87-64 with 5 minutes to go. After Dirk Nowitzki was fouled inside without a call, Avery Johnson had seen enough and went on the court to try to get a technical and slipped and fell. He did get the technical he wanted and then got in a ref's face to get the toss he wanted - it seemed he was hoping his ejection would motivate his flat team. It didn't help as Phoenix's lead remained in the 20s the rest of the quarter. In fact, they scored the last 4 points of the quarter to take their largest lead of the game at 99-73 after 3. Stoudemire continued his stellar performance and had 11 points in the 3rd quarter. Dallas kept playing good players in the 4th quarter and they managed to scored 8 straight points to pull within 88-105 with 6:40 left. But Phoenix re-inserted 2 of their sitting stars in Marion and Joe Johnson (Nash and Stoudemire were already on the floor) and the Suns went on a 10-2 run to push their lead back into the 20s at 115-90 with 4:55 remaining and Dallas threw in the towel. Phoenix won easily 127-102. It was an excellent performance by Phoenix and a terrible one by Dallas. Phoenix led the entire game and Dallas never got closer than 14 points in the 2nd half. It was a blowout, but the good news is that it just goes down as 1 loss - and it was a loss that Dallas did not play will in so they have much, much that they can improve on. Phoenix was easily the more aggressive team and Dallas hardly attacked (which blew my mind since Phoenix does not have a strong inside presence) - and the few times Dallas did attack, the Mavs' spacing was so terrible that Phoenix was able to sink 3 or 4 defenders down into the paint. Pure and simple, it was a very poor performances by Dallas on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court and they got the whupping they deserved. Phoenix shot 52.3% (46-88) FG including 12-22 3-pointers and Dallas shot 44.9% (44-98) FG including 5-18 3-pointers. Phoenix shot 23-28 FT and Dallas shot just 9-12 FT. Dallas did out-rebound Phoenix 46-43 including 17-10 offensive - but Phoenix was able to score after 7 of their 10 offensive boards. Phoenix leads the series 1-0. Game 2 is on Wednesday at 9:30 pm in Phoenix. Amare Stoudemire was a stud in this game and Dallas had no answer for him. It helped that his free throws were falling [he can be hot or cold from the line] as he got to the line a lot. He had 40 points on 13-21 FG and 14-17 FT to go with 16 rebounds including 6 offensive in 38 minutes. And he got plenty of help as Joe Johnson had 25 points including 3-4 3-pointers and Shawn Marion had 23 points including 9-16 FG. Johnson also had 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Marion also had 11 rebounds. Steve Nash did his usual damage with the pass and had 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 13 assists, but also had 4 turnovers. All of Quentin Richardson's 12 points came from 3-pointers, where he shot 4-8 3-pointers (he missed the 2 2-pointers he attempted). As is usual with Phoenix, the 5 starters comprised the bulk of the Suns' performances as the bench contributed just 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in 49 minutes. Jim Jackson was the only bench player to receive significant minutes with 23 minutes, but he missed all 4 shots he attempted. The only good thing for Dallas was that Dirk Nowitzki showed signs of returning to his all-star form. His shot was falling for only the 2nd time this post-season, but he didn't get the benefit of any whistles [he deserved a couple; but the officiating had nothing to do with the outcome of this game]. Nowitzki had a team high 28 points on 13-24 FG and 1-1 FT, 13 rebounds, and 4 assists. It was the only game this entire season that he attempted 1 free throw or fewer, and only the 16th time this season he attempted less than 5 free throws. Josh Howard played well when he was able to stay on the court, but was limited by foul trouble (including 2 bad calls). He had 12 points, 8 rebounds including 5 offensive, and 5 fouls. He also had 5 turnovers in his 28 minutes. Michael Finley had 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists and Jason Terry also had 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Erick Dampier stunk up the joint and looked terrible. The Mavs tried to go to him early, but he simply missed a shot and turned the ball over twice. As usual in this playoffs, he picked up 2 fouls early in the game and sat for the rest of the quarter. He didn't improve any when he did return as he couldn't do anything with Stoudemire, his help defense was non-existent, and he was often in the wrong spot on offense. He had 5 rebounds, missed the 2 shots he attempted, 4 fouls, and 2 turnovers in 15 ugly minutes. Jerry Stackhouse contributed 14 points off the bench, but shot 5-15 FG, including missing 2 layups. He also had 6 rebounds and 3 assists in 32 minutes. Marquis Daniels had 13 points and 4 rebounds including 3 offensive in 18 minutes. Quotes [D'Antoni's, some of Nash's, Stoudemire's, AJohnson's, and Nowitzki's quotes transcribed by me.] Mike D'Antoni on Stoudemire: "Defensively and offensively, that's one of his best, if not the best. He was awesome on both ends. That's pretty good." D'Antoni: "There was a lot of guys that had some great moments tonight. I thought defensively we played a lot better, a lot of energy. And when we do that we create opportunities to run. Guys knocking down shots. It's almost pick your poison, you either try to guard Amare or try to guard the outside guys. So tonight was good. And we know it was just 1 night. We'll be back in 2 nights and try to do it again." D'Antoni: "I definitely try to keep either Amare on the floor and Steve Nash on the floor at the same time. I think when Steve came back in, he came in with Hunter, probably Walter was already out there. But you know, Walter hit a big shot in the corner, that helped us. Steven Hunter did a great job. He played Nowitzki okay. The 1st half especially I thought he gave us really good minutes. That's a tough cover for him, I was asking a little bit too much. But he did a good job. Jimmy's solid. I don't think Jimmy had his best performance, but just a veteran out there who knows how to play. You know, Joe Johnson, Shawn Marion, those guys, they're incredible. Quentin hit big shots. Quentin didn't have a lot of stats, but took some charges that really helped to turn [it] around." D'Antoni: "Leandro came in and gave some good minutes and Bo Outlaw had a great assist. Is there anybody else? [comment: Quite a night.] Well, it is. And that's how we kind of been all year. You know, the individual awards, somebody has to get them because that's the way society is set up, but it is a team sport. And I'm telling you what, it's a pretty good team." D'Antoni on if they tried to get Stoudemire off early: "To be honest with you, you know, we don't really talk that much. God knows I'd give us some direction. No, we just play and then Steve has to figure out how they're going to guard it. And if they're, you know, like Memphis was sagging so much on Amare, especially that first game, that it left our shooters open and Steve has to find them. And if they do it the other way, then he has to find Amare. So that's why he has that big trophy because he's got a big job. And we have to repeat this a few more times." D'Antoni on AJohnson's ejection: "I saw Avery about pop hamstring, I know that. It's just tough. You know, Dirk went in, I didn't see it. I tell the officials all the time, I argue all the time and I'm about 1 out of 10 that I get right. I go back and watch tape and I never get them right. I'm not a good one to ask. I'm sure he got fouled and might have. You know, this is playoff time and I'm sure they'll be ready for us next time." D'Antoni on AJohnson falling prior to his ejection: "Oh ya, I've taken some falls. See those Gucci shoes, you have to get the ones that cost a little bit less and doesn't have the slick soles on the bottom." D'Antoni on playing Nash and Amare with foul trouble: "You know, I didn't worry about it. I don't think, has Steve ever fouled out of a game? I mean, I really didn't think twice about putting him back in with 3 fouls. He's not going to foul anybody. He might foul 4 times, maybe even the 5th time, but he'll never foul out, I don't think. I think he's too smart for that. So I have unbelievable confidence that he can play with fouls. I try not to be too stupid, try to work it out a little bit, but he gives me - and Amare, a little bit less because he's 22 years old and just because he's so hard to go to the basket you never know what happens. So have to be a little bit careful with him. But even Amare, I've left him out there with a lot of fouls and he's always done a pretty good job." D'Antoni on Dallas' low free throw attempts: "That's a key for us. You know, we try to play good defense without fouling. Sometimes that doesn't look to a lot of people and they think we don't play very good defense. But, you know, I just happen to think it's pretty good. It's not great defense, but it's pretty good." Steve Nash on the win: "It feels great. It kind of capped off a difficult weekend. Obviously it was great to win a prestigious award, but there was a lot of demands and then the emotion of playing my former team. It was nice to get the first one out of the way." Nash on the layoff: "I didn't know what to expect. I think everyone was really hungry and eager to get back out here. We had a ton of energy tonight, we're going to need it." Nash on game 2: "I know Avery and he's going to be firey and get them fired up and really make some adjustments. So we got to be just as fired up in game 2." Nash: "I don't think tonight means too much. They just came off a big series, and obviously this is a long series. We held home court and we have to hold it again on Wednesday. We certainly came out focused, which is so important for our team. When we're focused and playing with energy, we're extremely difficult to beat. It was good to get back to basketball - it was kind of like a sanctuary for this team." Nash on AJohnson's ejection: "He's as competitive as they come and I'm not surprised to see him do that when he gets frustrated." Nash on the time off: "I think it's definitely a factor. They just got here out of another series - and that's one of the benefits of sweeping a team is that we had time to get ourselves ready and it should help us. It should bode well for the series." Amare Stoudemire on if he was surprised that Dallas did not double-team him: "Not really. I guess they figured Dampier was a big enough center to hold me. But I do what I'm going to do, just take what the defense gives me." Stoudemire on game 2: "I think that they're going to try to bring a double- or triple-team on me and make the shooters shoot them out, the same thing Memphis did in game 1. You know me, I'm just come out there and still do the dirty work - grab the boards, block some shots, play some tenacious defense, and let our guards shoot them out." Stoudemire on his game: "It felt good. You know, we really came out and played tenacious defense. That was our main focus was to come out and play defense and our offense became easy because a lot of easy baskets were generated. So it felt good." Stoudemire on his success against Dallas: "Well, I don't know, you'll have to ask them that. I just come out and bring the same approach to every game. And it just seems to be that I'm averaging 33 against Dallas. But I just try to play hard every night." Stoudemire if Dallas can slow him down: "I don't know, I'm not sure. I mean, I don't think so. I think with the team that we have, we have so many threats to where somebody's going to have a big night. And that's the great thing about this team. We have so many scorers and Steve's doing a great job of being a point guard out there and that's what it takes." Stoudemire: "They were either going to guard me with Dampier or Henderson off the bench or Dirk. Tonight I had to guard Henderson and then I also had to guard Josh Howard. So I think the main thing was they couldn't attack us defensively. We got players that stepped up on the defensive end and made some key stops and allowed us to get some wins." Stoudemire on if it was his best game of his career: "Well, I don't know about my career. I got a lot big time games. But it was a big game as far as playoff, round 2, game 1." Stoudemire on Bradley defending him: "Yeah, 7-5. I pretty much had to step off of him and try to go around him. So I took what the defense gave me." Stoudemire on having defenders switching in makes it easier: "Not necessarily. I think when they switch up defenders on you, you got to take more time to realize what your strengths are. You know with Shawn Bradley I step off and try to go around him. I can't back him down because he's 7-5 and I'm 6-10. So just got to pay attention to what's going on and remember the strategy that you and the coaches went over before the game." Stoudemire on the layoff: "No rust at all. We still came in and got exercised up, treated some injuries, and got a lot of rest. So that's the main thing, that's the great thing about sweeping a team, you always get time to rest and recuperate for the next round." Stoudemire on physical play: "As long as nobody gets hurt out there, it's all good. You know, if you're fouling and you think that's what's going to stop me, then foul, you know, I'm going to the line and I'm shooting a pretty good percentage in the playoffs so far. Either or. Barkley had a point, this is the playoffs. If a guy is going off like that, I will foul him once or twice, but if he's going good from the line as well, then what are you going to do?" Shawn Marion: "This is just 1 win and we have to go out and get another. It's a W. It's just 1 though and we have 3 more to get this series." Quentin Richardson: "We're going to force the issue every time we come out until somebody stops us from doing it. That's our game. We've been doing that all year long." Joe Johnson on if Phoenix can play better: "I think so, no doubt. We just have to stay focused and know what we've come to do. Our offense did look pretty good tonight. It looked good all season. We just have to keep moving the ball and making plays and making everything easy." Johnson on Stoudemire: "He was just being Amare like he's been doing all season. I don't think any one person can stop him on the block. I think he has the advantage because they're not doubling." Avery Johnson: "Well, you have to tip your hat to Phoenix. They played an extraordinary game tonight. We didn't have an answer for anything that they did. They ran on us, they moved the ball. They basically played like they played during the first round and during the regular season. Very disappointed with our mental approach to the game. I think that we came in with more of a lackadaisical attitude. I don't think we got over our first round series. So now we know what we're up against. We'll just get back to the drawing board. And I guarantee you we'll have a better effort come game 2. I feel it's my responsibility to have this team ready to play, so I didn't do my job. So you can put this one on me." Johnson on his fall prior to his ejection: "Well, I've had a lot of embarrassing moments during my career. It was just one of those things. The way we were playing, I felt like I was going to be like the 6th man. Maybe we could play 6 on 5 and try to stop them. So I was out there actually trying to play defense, but you can't play defense in these type of shoes, you got to have some basketball tennis shoes." Johnson on his ejection: "Do I think Dirk was fouled? Do you think that's why I slipped? Do I think Dirk was fouled? Well, put it like this: Dirk shot a lot of free throws tonight, you know, he shot a lot of free throws [sarcasm as he only shot 1]. So you know, we got to try to get him to the free throw line even more than what we did tonight." Johnson on defending Stoudemire: "Well, we didn't do a good job, we didn't do anything on him. We obviously have some guys that we think can try to play him physical and contain him. And I don't think I implemented the right type of defense to help our guys do their job better. Hopefully we can look at what we did defensively, hopefully we can bring more energy. This stats sheet says Dirk got to the line eleven times, so maybe he can get there a little bit more the next game with some harder drives." Johnson not answering when asked about Dampier: "Well you know, again, we didn't really get the type of energy we needed early on. And I think it was more to do, like I said, from our mental approach. We had a pretty laid back day yesterday because we were trying to conserve some energy. We watched a lot of film. We came out here and I think we just, I guess, thought it was a vacation. You know, it was about 88 degrees out there and it's sunny. And I think we were more in a resort mode rather than a semi-finals of the playoff type of mode. So that'll hopefully change come game 2." Johnson on doubling Stoudemire: "So a lot of teams double him? Has it worked? If it works, we'll consider using it. If they did it, believe me, we'll consider doing it. I'm open to anything right now. You know, we pretty much had our 2nd worst game of the playoffs. I thought game 1 of the first round was pretty bad, but this was pretty embarrassing. Personally I don't know how to handle these situations." Johnson on if Dallas was overconfident: "It's kind of one of those things that's just a natural deal. And again, you guys haven't heard me make any excuses the whole series. We got whipped tonight. And no matter what the reason was, we just got whipped. We got out-played in every way tonight. But I've seen this before, I've seen our team - we're not a team that can really stand prosperity. So again, we got to realize we're the underdog in this series. Phoenix, you know, they had the best record in the NBA, they're at home, they got the MVP, and now the coach of the year. So we got to really play well to win. And we didn't play with the type of emotion, the type of energy that I know we can play with. So we'll see if that can change. We got to have a better performance than what we had tonight." Johnson on the let down after game 7: "I think Del [Harris] sensed it more than me. See, I guess that because I'm a young rookie coach - that's what ya'll call me, right, a rookie coach. Since I'm a young rookie coach, I'm always optimistic. I'm thinking coming in, hey, we'll ride that high from game 7 in our last series. Had a real tough, emotional series in a brawl against a really good Houston team. And I'm think, hey, we'll ride that emotion in to game 1. But Del was telling me to be real cautious about that. So I'm always optimistic. I'm always thinking that we're going to play our best game. I asked our team to give their best game, we didn't get it until game 7 in that series. So hopefully we'll play a better game than what we played tonight." Dirk Nowitzki on Stoudemire and Phoenix's fast breaks: "It was a key to us winning the game was slowing their transition down and trying to keep Stoudemire out of the lane and, you know, we didn't do anything really. I mean, they got what ever they wanted. They had the shots going from the outside. Stoudemire was scoring at will. And you know, it's tough to win a game if they score 127; we're not going to out-score them. They're a way better scoring team than us. We got to slow the game a little bit and keep them to a 100, 110. I think that's the pace where we can win a game, but not if they score 130." Nowitzki on Stoudemire: "We can't really double-team him. He doesn't really post up that much. He gets a lot of his stuff off the pick-and-roll. Steve's so good and he's rolling right behind Steve and he's getting little drop offs, little bounce passes, and he's so explosive in the lane that he's just going up and then finishing over everybody. So I don't think there is a way we can double-team him on a simple pick-and-roll play. So I don't know. We'll watch some film tomorrow. Obviously he had way too many offensive rebounds too. I mean, if he gets a shot up, we got to get him off the glass and do the job rebounding-wise. You know, bottom line is we got to get something out of our center position. We haven't really gotten anything out in the first round. If we want to be successful, successful run to have at the championship, we need something out of our center position." Nowitzki on Dampier: "It's tough. I just think he was a step slow with everything and he never really got involved in the game. And then he's always been in foul trouble, first series the same thing. You know, he gets a quick 2 in a matter of 2 or 3 minutes and then he can't be aggressive anymore, you get your 3rd one and you got to sit. So he's got to find a way to kind of stay out there a little longer and find his rhythm. You know, we got to have him out there and be a presence. We finally found a way to win with a small lineup in the first round, but that's not going to go on like that for the rest of the playoffs." Nowitzki on Dampier: "Well, I don't want to say anything now that I'll probably regret later. So we got some work to do. That's not the only thing we're missing. They scored, whatever, 30 fast break points. We got to adjust to the new pace of the series. We got to run back. They run after makes or misses, it doesn't matter. They always come at you. It seems like a lot of times we weren't really ready. You know, they pass the ball ahead really good and keep pushing it back up your throat after you score. And it seemed like we weren't ready for that." Nowitzki: "Well, you know, you guys know, it's always tough to respond right away after an emotional high. You know, it was a 7th game just a couple of days ago. We really played one of our best games all season long on both ends of the floor. And obviously, you know, you talk about not letting down, but it's easier said than done. I felt like in the 1st half, you know, we were just sleep walking through it, no one was really competing the way that we wanted to. I thought the 2nd half was already better, but it's easy to play with a 20-point lead. So they never really had the pressure on them. So hopefully in game 2, we can right away set the tone a little better and keep the game close and then we'll see what they do with that." Nowitzki on Johnson's ejection: "I thought I got fouled a couple of times. I only had 1 free throw, that's a little uncommon. But I don't think we lost the game necessarily on referees. You know, we got blown out. So we got to put the onus on ourselves to compete a lot better than we did. So I guess that play [Johnson falling down] summed up our night pretty good." Nowitzki on how he felt: "You know, after a blowout loss like that, you're a little bit of everything. You're disappointed, you're mad, you're angry. But I just think everybody has to pick it up a little bit, like I said, on the defensive end. We got to take more pride than let them score 130, that's a little embarrassing. They were laughing at us out there a couple of times. So we have to respond the right way in 2 days." Nowitzki on getting to the free throw line: "Maybe I got to take it in there stronger. You guys know, I'm my biggest critic and I always put the onus on myself to get in there harder and be stronger with the ball. I don't cry for fouls that much. I just got to play better, that's the bottom line." Jerry Stackhouse: "They just got off to a great start and we were never able to catch a rhythm. We didn't come out ready to play. We tried to limit Stoudemire and he still got off. I guess we'll have to go back to the drawing board on that one. But it was all about our energy at the start of the game. We didn't look like the team that's been playing the last week or so. They just beat us at every facet of the game. I'm kind of surprised at our energy level." Stackhouse: "When the game started, we just didn't have that energy. We had point blank opportunities we didn't convert and against a team like that, missed layups like that are huge. You've got to have them. They're not a great defensive team and we can pretty much get what we want, but if we don't convert the easy plays and have turnovers, then they get out and that's when they separated from us and we weren't able to recover." Jason Terry: "We're disappointed we lost the game. That game is over with and we're looking forward to game 2. We've been through adversity before. 1 game certainly doesn't make a series. We'll be ready. The General is going to get us prepared. We're going to have a good practice tomorrow, come right out full of energy on Wednesday." Terry: "They played their game. They came out and executed their game plan very well. We did not do that with our game. We're looking forward to game 2."
