Keith Van Horn remained out with his sprained left ankle. He may return for Game 5 on Wednesday. Joe Johnson is definitely out for Game 5 as he will not be re-evaluated until Thursday regarding his fractured left orbital bone. Game 4: Phoenix at Dallas (May 15) The game stayed close early on with both teams holding small leads, no larger than 4 points. Dallas scored 5 straight points to go up 17-14 with 5:15 remaining, but Phoenix then scored the next 5 points to re-take the lead with 4:35 left. A jumper by Steve Nash gave Phoenix a 22-21 lead with 3 minutes to go, but Phoenix would not score again in the quarter in missing their last 5 shots and missing 2 free throws. Dallas took advantage by closing the quarter by scoring 9 straight points, capped by a 3-pointer by Darrell Armstrong with a couple of seconds to go. Dallas led 30-22 after 1. Dallas shot 14-24 FG and 0-0 FT and Phoenix shot 9-20 FG including 1-6 3-pointers and 3-6 FT. Jerry Stackhouse opened the 2nd quarter with a jumper to give Dallas a 10-point lead. A 3-point play by Dirk Nowitzki put Dallas up 39-26 with 9:40 left. A 3-pointer by Leandro Barbosa pulled Phoenix within 31-41 with 8:05 to go, but Dallas then went on a 9-2 run to go up 50-33 with 6:20 remaining. Phoenix pulled within 45-58 with 2:15 left, but Dallas then scored the next 8 points to go up 66-45 with 45 seconds left. Nash hit a 3-pointer with 25 seconds to go and Shawn Marion go a layup at the quarter buzzer. Dallas led 66-50 at the half. Marion had 10 points in the 2nd quarter. Dallas shot 12-22 FG and 11-13 FT and Phoenix shot 10-21 FG and 6-6 FT in the 2nd quarter. Dallas out-rebounded Phoenix 25-16 in the 1st half. Surprisingly, Dallas was out-scoring Phoenix 17-2 in fast break points. A 3-pointer by Quentin Richardson pulled Phoenix within 55-68 with 9:30 to go, but Stackhouse nailed a 3-pointer with 9 minutes left to put Dallas' lead back at 16 points. With 8 minutes to go, it became the Steve Nash show as he scored Phoenix's next 16 points, but Dallas was mostly able to keep up with him offensively and Dallas led 85-72 with 3:30 remaining. A dunk by Marion pulled Phoenix within 11 points, but they could get no closer. Nowitzki converted a 3-point play as the quarter neared an end to give Dallas a 93-79 lead after 3. Nash had an amazing 23 points including 9-12 FG in the 3rd quarter - that's 23 of Phoenix's 29 3rd quarter points. Phoenix opened the 4th quarter with a 7-2 run to pull within 86-95 with 10 minutes remaining, but Dallas scored the next 4 points. Nash again took over for Phoenix in scoring the Sun's next 9 points, while Stackhouse scored Dallas' next 6 points and Dallas led 105-96 with 6 minutes to go. But a 3-pointer by Jason Terry (off a nice pass out by Erick Dampier) kicked off an 8-1 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Nowitzki, to give Dallas a 113-97 lead with 4:40 left. The teams traded 2 points a couple of times and a slam dunk by Josh Howard gave Dallas a 118-102 lead with 2:20 remaining. Phoenix did close the game with a 7-1 run to make the final margin a little closer. Dallas won 119-109. It was a good performance for Dallas and they led for most of the game, outside of the 1st quarter. Dallas took Phoenix out of their game plan in making it a 1-man show of just Steve Nash - and he did have a huge game, but no other Sun did and Amare Stoudemire, who had been averaging 35.7 points and 15.3 rebounds vs Dallas in this series, had just 15 points and 5 rebounds in this game. Dallas shot well throughout the game and even though Phoenix shot well, they never got their 3-point shot going. For the game, Dallas shot 55.4% (46-83) FG including 6-14 3-pointers and Phoenix shot 51.2% (42-82) FG including 8-21 3-pointers. Dallas shot 21-29 FT and Phoenix shot 17-23 FT. Dallas out-rebounded Phoenix 43-37 including 16-13 offensive. For the first time this series, Dallas had more assists than Phoenix with 21 assists and Phoenix had 16 assists - almost 8 below what they've averaged for the entire playoffs. Breaking the trend for the first 3 games, the team that won the opening tip lost the game and the team that had more rebounds won the game. The series is now tied at 2-2 and it is now the best of 3. Game 5 is in Phoenix on Wednesday at 8:00 pm and Game 6 is in Dallas on Friday at 8:00 pm. For the first time in the playoffs, Dirk Nowitzki looked comfortable offensively. He didn't have a stunning game, but was solid and mostly didn't hesitate to shoot. He had 25 points including 9-15 FG, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. Josh Howard was stellar and continued to enjoy the home cooking. He was the high man for the Mavs with 29 points including 13-21 FG and 10 rebounds including 6 offensive - 5 of those offensive rebounds came in the 1st half. He is a different player in the AAC than on the road during the playoffs as he's averaging 19.3 points including 55% FG and 8.8 rebounds in Dallas and it drops to 9 points including 40% FG and 3.8 rebounds on the road. Jerry Stackhouse came off the bench to be the 3rd Mav with 20+ points. Stack had 22 points and 7 rebounds in 34 minutes. 10 of his points came in the 4th quarter. Erick Dampier was really solid in the 1st half and did not pick up his 1st foul until less than 2 minutes left in the 1st quarter and, as such, did not sit until 3 minutes into the 2nd quarter. He had 10 points on 5-5 FG and 8 rebounds in the 1st half. For the game, he had 13 points on 6-8 FG and 1-4 FT, 11 rebounds, and 4 blocks in 32 minutes. Michael Finley was fairly quiet with 9 points and 3 rebounds. Jason Terry had 7 points on 3-9 FG, but did have a game high 8 assists and 3 steals. Darrell Armstrong didn't have many numbers, but provided a spark with his energy and defense in the 1st half. He had 5 points on 2-3 FG and 2 assists in 12 minutes. Marquis Daniels provided a boost in limited minutes with 9 points on 3-3 FG and 3-4 FT and 3 rebounds in 10 minutes. No other Mav played as it was a tight 8-man rotation. Steve Nash took full advantage of everything Dallas gave him - and they gave him a lot. He had a lot of easy shots, but also hit a number of his wow shots. Nash had a career high 48 points on 20-28 FG, 4-6 3-pointers, and 4-4 FT. 35 of his points came in the 2nd half (23 in the 3rd quarter and 12 in the 4th quarter). But Dallas' strategy worked as he only had 5 assists - 9 fewer than he averaged in the first 3 games. He also had 5 rebounds and 3 steals, but also turned the ball over 9 times, setting the Dallas opponent record for turnovers in the playoffs. Shawn Marion had a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. As mentioned above, Amare Stoudemire was not much of a factor in this game, after killing Dallas in the first 3 games. He had just 15 points on 3-8 FG and 9-11 FT and 5 rebounds. He did get in foul trouble during the 3rd quarter when he picked up his 4th foul 5 minutes into the quarter and picked up his 5th 3 1/2 minutes into the 4th quarter - he stayed in the game, though, and did not foul out. Quentin Richardson also was in foul trouble during the game and he sat more thanks to that - he collected his 3rd foul 2 minutes into the 2nd quarter and his 5th foul 2 1/2 minutes into the 4th quarter. He had 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 fouls in 34 minutes (the lowest any of the starters played). Jim Jackson had 11 points and 6 rebounds. Leandro Barbosa was the only bench play to get significant minutes. He had just 3 points on 1-7 FG, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists in 22 minutes. Walter McCarty didn't score in 5 minutes and Steven Hunter didn't score in 2 minutes. Quotes [Johnson's, Nowitzki's, Stackhouse's, Dampier's, D'Antoni's, and Nash's quotes transcribed by me] Avery Johnson: "Thought it was a total team effort tonight. Great win for our team. Obviously we still have a ton of things to improve on. Just a great Western Conference shoot out. We thought our defense was pretty good in the 1st half. It wasn't very good in the 2nd half. But, hey, that's what happens when Phoenix has the MVP. Steve had an incredible game, 48 points, almost 50 points. And we got to try to do a better job of containing him. I thought maybe, our effort on Steve was kind of inconsistent, but we'll keep battling. That's why he's the MVP. And he sure had a great game offensively. [question] Can I finish my opening statement? No, I didn't, I was about to say something else. That's all right. Well I think when Steve gets 28 points and 20 assists, you know, they really hammer you pretty good and that means a lot of other people are scoring. So again, we're just trying to figure out something that works against this team. You know, he had 5 assists tonight, 9 turnovers, but 48 big points. And that's what an MVP caliber player will do. I thought we had a total team effort. I thought Dirk probably had one of his better games of the playoffs. Josh Howard was really good offensively. You know, we got 30-something points off of our bench, they only got 3. So we like what we're doing. And again, it's 2-2 right now. We've been in situations during this year, obviously, where we know how to respond to adversity. We know we got a tough game coming up for game 5. Obviously we feel pretty good about this win." Johnson on Dallas responding when they are down: "You know what, in all of your articles tomorrow, just write that, that the Mavs are in a ditch. So hopefully they can read that. You know, we respond during adversity. And I've seen this team respond during adversity, but I've seen the other side. I knew we weren't ready to play for game 3 and it's my responsibility. I failed to get this team ready to play. And I thought tonight, I didn't do anything to get them ready to play, they got themselves ready." Johnson on limiting Stoudemire: "Well again, it's no secret, we don't want him attempting a lot of shots. So we try to get the ball out of his hands and fortunately it worked for us tonight and he didn't have a big game." Johnson on Dampier: "Again, when he plays 30 or more minutes or more, we feel pretty good. We need his body, we need his rebounds. 13 and 11 and 4 blocks, that's kind of what we need. Again, I hope when he goes to Phoenix, he eats the same thing, goes to bed at the same time. Probably have some nightmares about Stoudemire, do something. Because we need that same type of effort." Johnson on Damper: "Again, like I told the guys, you're in a period right now where 3 weeks of basketball can change your whole life. So it's a good time to get ready to play and get out here and contribute. For years when I was playing point guard, you've got to really prove that you belong. And if people are saying that you are a weak link, this is a great time to prove somebody wrong, if you have any pride. Again, we talk about a lot of those kind of things behind the scenes. I like the effort. A coach, all he wants is effort. Energy, effort, concentration. So again, I thought Stackhouse was big. He made some great plays for us. And again, we've been rebounding the ball pretty good. We win the rebounding game again tonight. But with this game and one of their players getting almost 50 points, obviously there is another level to go to. We feel we can continue to get better as these series wear on and we can get a grip on what type of defense we need to play." Johnson on changing how Dallas defends Phoenix's pick-and-roll: "Somewhat. Just trying to stay with their shooters as much as we can." Johnson on Nowitzki being out on the floor more: "We try to mix it up more. I think it was too much of wanting him to go in the post a little bit. Just mix it up a little bit. Fortunately he made a 3 tonight so I'm going to get a lot of fun poked at me tonight because I'm the anti-Dirk-3-killer. So they're really going to talk bad about me in the locker room tonight." Johnson on Nash: "Well, you know, he had an incredible performance tonight. You know, 48 points. He was really a scoring machine tonight, and the last game also. So you know, Steve is going to get his points, you know. The main thing for us is to try to limit with what the other guys can do." Dirk Nowitzki on hitting some shots early: "It was good, especially early on. Got a couple of looks in transition. I was able to lose my defender couple times and that's, I think, what I've got to do. In game 3 everything was so hard. It seemed like they were waiting on me down there, and I thought today I was doing a lot more stuff out of movement where they can't setup and wait on my penetration and triple-team me in the paint. I thought I tried to do a little more movement and 1 or 2 dribbles and up and that's usually my game. So it worked a lot better for me tonight than it did the first couple of games." Nowitzki on Dampier not in foul trouble: "That was huge. Pretty much the whole playoffs he's been getting hit with 2 or 3 fouls really early and then we've got to take him out, and in the 2nd half he really can't be aggressive again because he's getting his 3rd or 4th really quick. So I though for him it was big for him to get his rhythm early today and stay out of foul trouble. And we need him in there. We need his effectiveness under the basketball and clogging things up and getting some big offensive rebounds. I thought he played well tonight." Nowitzki on Dampier being in there helping Nowitzki's offense: "Yeah, obviously I'm not a center-type player. But I got to do what the team needs. If Damp is foul trouble that means I got to guard Stoudemire for some period of time and that means that I got to get the job done some how even though I don't really fill that position really well, but sometimes you've got to sacrifice yourself for the benefit of the team. And I'm willing to do what it takes." Nowitzki on defending Stoudemire: "I think we stuck with him a little more. We helped a lot on Nash's penetration in all the games so far and Nash found Stoudemire on the roll, he found the shooters, and I think we really stuck with him today and made Nash finish, and obviously he had an unbelievable shooting night. He had a career night, he was on fire. But the main thing is we didn't give all the 3s we did in game 3 and really stuck with their shooters and that's why we won the game." Nowitzki on Howard: "You know, he's our energizer out there. He's all over the place. He's probably our best defender out there. He's been aggressive around the boards, he keeps a lot of balls alive for us. All season long, he's very important for us on the perimeter. Like I said, he's always guarding the best offensive player on the opponent. He worked on his shot a lot. He's got that little in-between game now. And he always was a great driver. And he was just very, very aggressive from the tip and that's what we needed him to do." Nowitzki on keeping momentum going: "Well we got to. We don't want to go to Phoenix and waste another effort as we did in game 3. In game 3 I thought we never really were ready to play and they got what ever they wanted. I think defensively we've got to do more of the same. Do little better job on Steve, obviously. He had the layups, he had the shots going, so obviously we want to shut him down a little better in game 5. But do more of the same. Have the same type of energy, the same type of approach to the game. And we'll see what happens." Nowitzki on Stackhouse: "Obviously he's our 6th man. We need him to come off the bench and produce, be aggressive. And he is, usually always. He's always getting some free throws. He's very aggressive going to the basket. His shot was going tonight. So I think he's a very big part of what we're doing all season long and hopefully he can keep this up and we'll be a good team." Nowitzki on offense: "I thought we moved the ball a little more. You know, in game 3, everything was tough, everything was 1-on-1 and we ran into a wall. You know, they had their defense was set up and we never really got good shots. And today I thought we tried pushed it more, get good shots on the break, play more pick-and-roll, and get just their defense moving. And I think that big key for us." Jerry Stackhouse: "This was the most important game of the series for us. Being down once we lost the 1st game at home, we had to have this game. I don't think that nobody in our locker room wanted back to Phoenix down 3-1. So we came out and had a lot of energy early. I think that Josh set the tone early and we just rolled. I think Damp was big for us all night with him being able to stay on the floor and give us quality minutes. That was a huge lift for us too." Stackhouse on Dampier: "Obviously we have success sometimes with just our small lineup when he's not on the floor. But definitely late in games we need big rebounds. I think there was sequence in the 4th quarter where he was just dominant. I mean, that's the type of the play that if we feel that we can have that consistently from Damp, we can go a long ways. Where he was covering for everybody, guys got beat off the dribble, he was there blocking shots and came up with the rebounds. I think that was the play off the night out of everything that happened tonight, that sequence that he had was key for us." Stackhouse on depth: "I think, maybe, I said game 5, game 6, you know, later on we get in this series, it's better for us because we have more depth than they have. Their starters are logging a lot of minutes right now and we've just got to continue to work the game and try to wear them down. They're a great running team, but we feel that we can run pretty good too. So if we can keep the game, not at a frantic tempo, but at a pretty steady pace then I think that would be beneficial for us the further that the series goes on." Stackhouse on carry over for game 5: "I don't know. If we could bottle it up and take it with us, we'd definitely try to do it, man. That's the way it's been for us all season. It seems like once we're down, we found a way to fight; when our backs are against the wall, we fight. But hopefully we can find, we got to feel like going into Phoenix 2-2 and a hostile environment like it is - their fans is going to be real energize - that we got to look at it like our backs are against the wall and try to come out there with a win. Because obviously we feel that if we can get it back home, it's time for us to turn the corner on being able to once we get in to a position of advantage to take that advantage. We haven't done it so far up to this point in the season, but I think it's time to make that turn." Stackhouse on the 4th quarter: "It's just, I mean, we had good looks the last 4th quarter, we just didn't hit them. They hit us with a run, separated them from us for about 5 or 6, and then we just started pressing. As talented as we are offensively, that game we just started to pressing and the basket just got small on us. Tonight, we kept our poise throughout the game, and especially in the 4th quarter, and we were able to still get back today. We made a conscious effort to drive the ball. We just feel that they don't have anybody to stay in front of us. If we want to put our head down and get to the basket. Obviously we've got to be careful not to pick up charges and things like that. But we got good shooters and when they come over to rotate, we got to make that extra pass and have confidence that guys going to knock down shots." Stackhouse on Nash: "I think he had 5 assists, and that's what we wanted to try to limit. You know, no, we don't want to give him 46 points or 50 points, I mean that wasn't in the game plan. But we felt that if we could allow him to score and not have all those other guys become involved in the offense like they were in game 3 that it would give us a better chance to win the game. But when he's getting 20, 25 and he's getting 15, 16 assists, that's not good for us. You know, Steve is conscious of it. I think he wants to get to get those other guys involved, but we knew it at halftime that he was going to look to be aggressive offensively, and he did. He kept his team hung around, but Amare Stoudemire didn't have a big night. Quentin Richardson, Shawn Marion didn't have a big night. So we'll give up 1 to save 3 or 4." Jason Terry on the defense on Nash: "We didn't decide to let him have anything. It was a total team effort defensively. He just had the hot hand, and we limited everyone else." Erick Dampier: "I just went out and played the best that I could. Whenever [Stoudemire] put the ball on the floor, whenever he drives, I just tried to contest the shot. No ticky-tacky fouls that I got in the last game. So the key was tonight to just stay on the floor and play good defense and contest all the shots that he takes." Dampier on Stoudemire: "We did an excellent job on the pick-and-rolls. Like I said earlier, that's where he scored the majority of his points. We had a lot of guys helping out on us tonight and we were able to contain that pick-and-roll." Josh Howard: "Everybody on the team was real aggressive coming out of the gate. Everybody was being aggressive, and that's what we need to win this series." Howard on Nash: "He's an MVP-type player and he's going to get his points. We just wanted to stop those assists." Howard: "Limiting Nash's assists - we felt if we could do that, we could win the game." Howard on defending Nash: "It was something coach wanted to try. I tried to contain him as much as possible." Howard: "[I was] being aggressive, trying to get the little, sneaky baskets to go." Mike D'Antoni: "I just thought our lack of focus or energy or what ever you want to call it and their abundance of energy the 1st half killed us. We didn't get loose balls, rebounds, all the little stuff that kind of, you know, instead of being down 16, being about 9 or 8 to where when we have a run in the 2nd half, you're either even or you pull ahead a little bit and we just didn't do it. Didn't come out with the desperation that they came out with and we kind paid for it." D'Antoni on Dallas' defending Stoudemire: "I would think just looking at numbers and without looking at - it's like let Steve score and just keep on Stoudemire. But again, between the 2 of them they've got 63 points. And the other night, what was it, 36 and 23. I mean, more or less the same. That's not where we get beat. We have 109 points on the board. And not getting loose balls, not getting stops, not getting runs. 1st half fast break points was 17-2. That's us. That's not what they did, that's our lack of energy or focus or desperation. And that's where you pay for it. They will make their choices and they did, they let Steve shoot 20-28. I don't know if we can do better than that." D'Antoni on Dampier: "Yeah, I think he makes a difference, you know, he was 6-8 [FG] or what ever, but Josh Howard was the one that killed us, on the rebounds and everything else. Probably made a difference. But again, we scored 109 points. We just gave them too many opportunities, too many 2nd chances, too many fast breaks. We just had a break down 1st half to meet the energy, focus, and really the desire to win this game. And that's usually what it comes down in playoffs. We kind of picked it up in the 2nd half, which was kind of good to see. Kind of disturbing because really if we ran out of gas, that's one thing; but we had the gas, we just didn't apply it the 1st half. I think we need to learn from it. And that's a young team thinking that, well, we still have 2 games at home, probably. I can't put words in their head, but that's probably what happened. You try to guard against it, but that's human nature a little bit. So we have [to win] 2 out of 3 now and we have 2 in Phoenix. I would think that's still pretty good." D'Antoni on Nash: "That's pretty amazing. 48 points is a lot of points. But he was 20-28. To be honest with you, I thought the only [place] where he got in trouble was in the 1st half, he had 5 or 6 turnovers where he just went too deep. They gave him the shot earlier, he started doing it the 2nd half. I thought he should have just go ahead and just busted it, if they give it to him, just bust it. He's a good shooter. If they want to give it to him, he'll take it." D'Antoni on Nash in the 1st half: "I thought he was trying to get everybody involved, going a little too deep and got himself in trouble a little bit. And we talked about it, he just needs to shoot it. And I think everyone on the team knows that. If they're going to give it to him, our best shooter, then he needs to take it. If he gets 60 points, he gets 60 points." D'Antoni on if he has to ask Nash to shoot like Nelson had to ask him: "No, not really, I think he figured it out. [question: not like in Dallas] No he's gotten more selfish in Phoenix. [laughs] No. He's getting older, he's getting selfish." D'Antoni on if that's what Dallas was trying to do: "I think so, to a certain degree. I think they were going under and really staying on Amare. Just faking at Steve and letting him take shots. I would hope. He took 48, that's probably the reason." Steve Nash on trying to adjust to what Dallas was doing: "I don't know. I think obviously they changed their game plan a little bit. I thought I had to be aggressive to try to make them pay for the way they were playing. They know that's not they way we really want to play, we like to share it around. So they did a good job of kind of making us adjust. But I don't think that was the key. I think we just got out-played, got out-hustled. We hustled and played hard for most of the 2nd half, but you know you can't play the way we did for stretches in the 1st half and expect to win a playoff game, especially on the road. So I think that you can look at the oddity of me scoring a lot of points tonight and not having a bunch of assists, but offensively I think we weren't far off. But defensively we just didn't have the fire that we had the last game." Nash on Dallas' defense making him take shots: "For the most part. I think I always want to get my teammates involved, that's the way I play. I love to see them get their energy and confidence up by scoring, but they were trying to take it away from them. But we shot 50% and we scored 109 points, so that's enough to win. We just in the 1st half gave up too many points basically and didn't play with enough energy and passion and that's what did us in. We got back in the game for the most part, but we couldn't over come the hole that we dug for ourselves early in the 1st half." Nash: "I didn't think it mattered who was on the floor [for Dallas]. It's more about us and how we play. You know, we got ourselves back into the game for the most part. But like I say, you can't let them shoot 50-some odd percent, give up nearly 70 points in the 1st half and play with a lack of commitment like I thought early on. We gave up too many offensive rebounds, hustle plays. That just set the tone. It dug a hole, gave them some confidence and that was too much for them to overcome." Nash on depth: "I don't think it will wear us down. You know, they came out of a 7-game series, we had 8 days off. For us to go 6 or 7 games isn't the end of the world at this point, even without Joe. We're not as good of a team without Joe. We can still be pretty good like game 3, but in the long run, I think that we have enough energy to get through the series. I just think that we got to play with a lot more passion every night and sometimes when you have a little more depth, it gives you a chance to find that passion and somebody can give more of a spark or more of a lift. So we all got to do a great job of coming together, rallying around each other like we did in game 3." Nash: "That's the playoffs. If you've noticed, they've had 2 bad ones too. If you look at most at most series, momentum swings. It's such a common thing in the playoffs. You win a game and it's like you'll never get beat again. You lose a game it's like you'll never win a game again. And I think we've seen that happen twice now in this series for each team. That's the playoffs and that's the nature of it and you just got to come out and be prepared to play and have better performances on 4 nights out of the 7. Right now we're right back at evens and it's a 3-game series." Nash on his 3rd quarter: "I was just trying to take what they gave us. I was getting some openings and I got my rhythm and I was just luck to get some shots and make them pay for that." Quentin Richardson on Nash: "He carried us by himself for a long time. But one guy can do only so much without his teammates." Jim Jackson on Dallas' game plan: "They were not going to let Amare beat them."
