Dirk Nowitkzii was selected to the All-NBA 1st team, as voted on by the media. It is the first time a Mav ever made the All-NBA 1st team. Nowitzki had the 4th most point total [the teams are voted on by position] and he received 75 out of 124 1st team votes. It is the 5th straight season that Nowitzki has been an All-NBA team (twice named to the 2nd team and twice named to the 3rd team). Game 5: Dallas at Phoenix (May 18) The game stayed close early on thanks to both teams missing some easy shots. Jerry Stackhouse scored 5 straight points to give Dallas the largest lead of the quarter at 18-13 with 5:50 to go, but Jim Jackson answered with a 3-pointer. A layup by Leandro Barbosa tied the game at 25-25 with 1:40 left, but Dallas scored the last 4 points of the quarter to go up 29-25 after 1. Stackhouse had 11 points and Steve Nash had 10 points in the quarter. Dallas scored the first 3 points of the 2nd quarter to go up 32-25 with 10:30 remaining as Phoenix started the quarter cold - they got their first points of the quarter with 9:50 left. Dallas led 34-27 with 9:30 to go and Phoenix went on an 8-2 run to pull within 35-36 with 6:45 remaining, but Dallas responded by scoring the next 4 points to retain the lead and held a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter. Dirk Nowitzki hit 2 free throws with 20 seconds left to give Dallas a 55-48 lead at the half. Nowitzki had 12 points in the 2nd quarter. Steve Nash was already nearing a triple-double with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists in the half. For the half, Dallas shot 47% FG and Phoenix shot 39% FG. There was a switch in the officiating during halftime as Steve Javie aggravated a strained calf and backup ref Jess Kersey replaced him for the 2nd half. After playing well in the 1st half, Dallas lost their focus coming out of halftime and Phoenix found theirs after a halftime lecture. Phoenix opened the 3rd quarter with a 7-2 run to pull within 55-57 with 10:30 to go. Nowitzki hit a jumper to give Dallas a 64-59 lead with 8:20 left and Phoenix then went on an 8-1 run to take their first lead since 4 minutes into the game at 67-65 with 5:15 to go. 3 straight free throws by Nash (1 off of a technical on Josh Howard for slapping the ball to half court [though Shawn Marion should have also gotten a technical for shoving Howard] and 2 off of Howard's foul on Nash) gave Phoenix a 74-69 lead with 3:30 remaining. After the teams traded buckets, Dallas closed the quarter by scoring the last 6 points, capped by 2 free throws by Stackhouse with a fraction of a second on the clock as he got Jackson to jump at him on a pump-fake, as Phoenix went scoreless over the last 2:50 of the quarter. Dallas led 77-76 after 3. Nash had 15 points in the quarter as Dallas completely ignored him and he got a number of easy shots. Phoenix out-rebounded Dallas 19-10 in the quarter. Nash got a rest to start the 4th quarter, but it didn't slow Phoenix down as Jackson stepped up big. Phoenix scored the first 9 points, with 6 by Jackson, to put Phoenix up 85-77 with 9:25 left. Dallas did not get their first points of the quarter until 8:45 remaining as Dallas missed their first 4 shots and committed 2 turnovers during their drought. A jumper by Nowitzki and a jumper by Jason Terry pulled Dallas within 83-87 with 7:30 to go, but Phoenix then scored the next 7 points to go up 94-83 with 6:20 remaining. Phoenix led between 12 and 8 points over the next 5 minutes. A 3-pointer by Stackhouse pulled Dallas within 102-109 with 1:10 left. Dallas was able to hit 2 more 3-pointers, but Phoenix hit 2 free throws before each and Phoenix led 113-108 with 10 seconds left. Howard stole the ball, but missed a shot. A free throw by Marion capped the scoring. Phoenix won 114-108. It was a good 1st half for Dallas and a poor 2nd half; and a poor 1st half for Phoenix and a good 2nd half. Phoenix was helped by Dallas' defense being non-existent in the 2nd half. It was pathetic at how many uncontested and easy shots Phoenix got in the 2nd half. After shooting 39% FG in the 1st half, Phoenix shot 51% FG in the 2nd half. After shooting 47% FG in the 1st half, Dallas shot 40.5% FG in the 2nd half. Over all, Phoenix shot 44.8% (43-96) FG including 5-19 3-pointers [3-pointers weren't much of a factor in this game]. Dallas shot 43.6% (41-94) FG including 8-22 3-pointers (with 3 in the last 1:10 of the game). Phoenix shot 23-28 FT and Dallas shot 18-24 FT. How bad was Dallas' interior defense? Phoenix out-scored Dallas 66-30 in the paint, with most of the damage coming in the 2nd half with Phoenix having 40 points in the paint in the 2nd half while Dallas had 12. To make matters worse, Dallas gave up far too many offensive rebounds throughout the game and their rebounding stunk in the 2nd half. Phoenix out-rebounded Dallas 56-42 (35-20 in the 2nd half) including 20-13 offensive. Both teams were fairly clean with the ball with Phoenix having 13 turnovers and Dallas having just 8 turnovers. Phoenix now leads the series 3-2 and it is do or die time for Dallas. The Mavs must win game 6 in Dallas on Friday (at 8:00 pm) to keep the series alive. It was another stellar performance by Steve Nash as he took everything Dallas gave him (and the Mavs gave him far too much) and worked hard on the defensive boards. He earned his first ever playoff triple-double and Dallas opponents' 6th playoff triple-double. Nash had 34 points, 13 rebounds (all defensive), and 12 assists. His turnovers remained high, though, as he had 5 turnovers. Unlike the last game, which Dallas won despite Nash going off, Dallas was unable to contain Phoenix's other players. Amare Stoudemire returned to his stud-self and had 33 points on 10-17 FG and 13-15 FT, 18 rebounds including 5 offensive, and 3 blocks. 15 of his points came in the 4th quarter. Jim Jackson turned it on in the 2nd half where he scored all but 3 of his points. He scored 15 points including 7-8 FG in the 4th quarter. Jackson had 21 points including 9-14 FG to go with 5 rebounds. Shawn Marion played all 48 minutes and had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Quentin Richardson was again plagued by foul trouble and didn't have a good game. He had 7 points including 3-11 FG and 0-4 3-pointers, 5 rebounds (all offensive), and 5 fouls. As usual with Joe Johnson out, Phoenix didn't get much from their bench. Leandro Barbosa had 2 points on 1-5 FG and 0-3 3-pointers and 2 rebounds in 13 minutes. Walter McCarty missed both shots he attempted and had 1 rebound in 8 minutes. Steven Hunter missed the 2 shots he attempted and shot 1-2 FT and had 2 rebounds in 7 minutes. Dirk Nowitzki was the high man for Dallas with 34 points on 11-22 FG and 11-14 FT. 13 of his points came in the 4th quarter. He also had 10 rebounds and 3 steals. He did get poked in the eye during the game, but didn't miss much time. Jerry Stackhouse was unconscious in this game. He was just draining shots, most of them coming off of 1-on-1 plays. He had 29 points including 11-21 FG and 6 rebounds off of the bench. Josh Howard was also injured the game when he got kneed in the side on a drive by Jim Jackson (who was also the player who poked Nowitzki in the eye), but Howard was able to return after a few minutes. He had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, but didn't do much in the 2nd half as he had 12 points and 9 rebounds at halftime. Erick Dampier had an up-and-down game. Offensively he was worthless as he missed all 7 shots he took from the floor and shot 2-4 FT and fumbled a number of passes away (don't know how he wasn't officially credited with a turnover). But he was good with the rebounds and had a team high 14 rebounds including 8 offensive and had 3 blocks. Jason Terry had a quiet 17 points and 8 assists. Michael Finley had a poor night with 7 points on 3-11 FG, 1 rebound, and 2 assists in 35 minutes. And that was basically it for Dallas as Marquis Daniels' only stat was a foul in 8 minutes and Darrell Armstrong missed all 3 shots he attempted (all 3s) and had 1 assist and 1 foul in 6 minutes. Keith Van Horn remained out with his sprained left ankle, but hopes to be available for game 6. Quotes [D'Antoni's, Nash's, Stoudemire's, AJohnson's, and Nowitzki's quotes transcribed by me] Mike D'Antoni: "Incredible show of heart the 2nd half. The 1st half we were kind of playing on our heels a little bit, a little tight. We took a pretty good punch from them and we were back on our heels, especially towards the end of the half. And the 2nd half we just came out and did everything quick, quick pick-and-rolls, and we played our style of basketball. So obviously some great individual performances, but great team effort and great show of heart." D'Antoni on Nash: "What am I going to say? Thank God that he can do that. He almost had a triple-double the 1st half. But again, it's a product of what they're giving us. He's taking it. And that's what we'll do. Amare stepped up. He had a slow start, but he ends up with what, 33 and 18. For a 22 year old, that's not too bad. But Jimmy Jackson actually was the one that kind of turned the tide and we needed somebody else to step up and he did it big time - did it with Steve on the bench and gave him an extra couple of minutes and gave us an 8 point lead that came back down to 4, but gave us an 8 point lead and really got us rolling and got us over the hump." D'Antoni on Nash getting rest: "I think every 30 seconds we can get for him is going to help. But Steve's an incredible athlete also. You know, he can go 40, 44. We just [are] trying to save him for 5 years. My contract's not that long. [laughs] So we'll save him during the season, but playoffs, he'll go. And I just don't see him slowing down or wearing down or anything." D'Antoni on halftime: "Yeah, I was in there, did you see the smoke coming out of the coach's office? No, it's just that we're at a level now where you've put in all your sets, you put in all your plays, you've done your basic how the Phoenix Suns are going to play an now it's staying on task and playing like the Suns and be the aggressor and, you know, go after every loose ball and rebounds and things that when we get beat we didn't do. And that's the biggest, you know, just keep beating the drums and telling them, hey, guys, this is how we are and keep them on task. And they do that, that's why we're 62 and 20, because we need to do that. And I just don't think that we have to change what we do." D'Antoni on if Nash was keeping Phoenix alive in the 1st half: "In the 1st half, 2nd half, you know, he did what he did in the sense of that's who he is. They're giving him that and he's going to take it. And just going to keep being aggressive. And again, you know, the theme is the heart and the hustle and the toughness that we showed. That's why we got beat the last time. It's not schemes. It's not going back and saying, oh, we need to do this. There's always a little bit of adjustments. There's always tweaking the defense to get a little bit better. That goes on all year, every game, gives a little bit of something to do. But now it's time for the guys to step up and put everything on the line and make sure that there's not a loose ball that we don't get or rebound or missed assignment, concentration. That's got to be, that's the reason that we win." D'Antoni on pick-and-roll: "Actually we did use it the last game. Just Steve scored 9 layups and 4 1-foot shots and he had 48 points. As a matter of fact, he was off a little bit tonight, just not very good, we'll have to talk to him about that. But that's what they're giving us and it just looks different, it's the inside-out. Usually it's him to Amare and now it's him to him. You know, that's what they're giving, he's taking it, he's reading it, and he's our best shooter. They want to do that, that's fine. We're not going to get a better shot from a better shooter than what he's doing." D'Antoni on Richardson: "He's fine. They're really staying with him and they're really doing a great job. You know, we can't dictate how the other team plays and how they want to defend us. We can only go to where they aren't. And, you know, it's like baseball, you hit them to where they aren't. And that's what we're doing. And they're on Q. And he's doing a great job of defending, not getting his head down, and playing as hard as he can play. That's all you can ask from somebody. Other series there will be other things and there's different matchups and there's different ways that teams are going to play you and he'll step up when it's called for him to step up." D'Antoni on game 6: "We got to come out just like this. We got to, you know, remember the 2nd half and the energy and the focus. And you don't allow yourself to say, oh, we have game 7. I hope that doesn't creep into anyone's head because that's not how were treating it. We're treating game 7 Friday. And then we're going after it." D'Antoni on Stackhouse and missing Johnson: "Well, it helps to have different guys. A 6-8 guy on him would be nice to have another luxury. But Stackhouse is a great player. He's making great plays and he's had some hard shots. You know, sometimes you just can't stop guys. And he's one of those guys that's been a scorer all of his career and he's doing a great job." D'Antoni on Stoudemire: "You know, he's more assertive, just the pick-and-rolls. You know, after a while they get sick of Steve scoring on every one and they make a move toward him and that's when he picks it up. You know again, it's just Steve reading the situation and doing it and Amare's being aggressive, got a few offensive rebounds that's really helped him. And we ran better. We got out on transition. We get Amare on the open floor then they can't scheme that and that depends on how we want to play them. Get some stops and you get out and get Amare loose." D'Antoni on going up when Nash was out: "Yeah, we went up 8, I was able to rest him a little bit more. Got it down to 4 and that pulled the plug right then. But any time that Steve goes out and we can give him a little bit of a cushion, that's definitely gold." Steve Nash on his looks: "Well I think I kind of expected it. There was a lot of talk about they weren't that upset with the 48 points. And they thought that we didn't get our normal performances and get everybody involved and getting that kind of balanced attack that I think we're most potent at. But so I was some what prepared to do the same thing. But I think, you know, the way I like to play is to get my teammates involved. You know, I always love to see my teammates have fun and get their energy up, but at the same time, being one of the best shooters on the team, I have to shoot when I'm open. So I just have to find that balance and shoot when I'm open and find my teammates when they don't play them." Nash on the 4th quarter: "It was, I think it was very important. I thought even tonight, we were flat for a long period of time tonight. I really felt at halftime like the wind was kind of out of our sails, to use probably the 9,000th cliche you guys have heard tonight. But you know, we just didn't really have that spirit about us that's been so prominent in our season. So it was really important to us to come out the 2nd half and kind of pick up the tempo and get the energy back and the swagger, and it was great to see." Nash on Jackson: "Speaking of coming out of the 2nd half and picking up the tempo, within 12 seconds Jimmy had a 3-point play. And it just sets the tone. I can't express how important it is to go deep into the playoffs to have a deep squad and a team. We're not that deep right now, but with losing Joe, who would have thought that we could have survived. And Jimmy steps in and plays outstanding. And with a short bench and short rotation, he's played like an All-Star in stretches, like the 2nd half tonight. I go out of the game and we play better for a few minutes, and that's what a team's all about. And Jimmy's a huge part of that - at leading us, playing hard, fighting, teaching these young guys what's it about." Nash on Stoudemire: "You make slight adjustments. In this league I think it's about continually adjusting in the playoffs. He's a talented player and, you know, I'm going to keep looking for him and keep trying to figure it out to get him plays. But, you know, another important thing is I think we just played with more energy and passion. We had a few more transition opportunities that kind of loosened the game up for us. In game 4, everyone talked about me scoring so many points and our team not playing great offensively, but we scored 109 points. Tonight they scored 108. 109 was enough to win, we just didn't play with enough passion, particularly in the in the 1st half." Nash on game 6: "That's the million dollar question. After beating them up pretty good in game 1 and missing a 3 to win game 2 and then winning game 3, that's why we're not up 3-nothing because in the playoffs, momentum continually shifts like that. And that is the big question - how do you stop from losing that edge? The losing team always comes back with a bit more edge to them. If you can combat that then you kind of solve the riddle." Amare Stoudemire on the 2nd half: "Well, I'm not sure. I think that in the 1st half I came out aggressive and I tried to get going, it just took me a little longer. The 2nd half, we came out strong and I came out strong. So, I don't know." Stoudemire on Nash: "It's pretty impressive. You know, I wasn't expecting Steve to pull down 13 boards tonight, that's pretty impressive from his behalf. He gave you are great game out there, you know, all around game with rebounds and assists and 34 points is impressive as well. So he's showing you why he's the MVP." Stoudemire on Dallas' defense: "I think they tried to do the exact same thing they did in the last game. I went to the post a few times, kicked it out when ever they came to double-team. But I think I got most of my points just off playing basketball, not necessarily posting up, not necessarily a set play. Just I kept myself active and kept moving out there and I got some pretty good baskets." Stoudemire: "That was huge, you know, to have 66 points in the paint. And I came out on a rebound-mode tonight and I wanted to crash the boards and give us a great chance to get a lot of 2nd chance points out there. So, we took advantage of our height. They went small on us and we took advantage of that. I can't wait for game 6." Stoudemire on game 6: "They'll come out probably just a little harder. Probably with the same ideas of double-teaming me where ever I get it and they'll probably try to trap Steve or get the ball out of Steve's hands on the screen-and-roll. Because he did a great job tonight with distributing the ball and also rebounding. So it's hard to control me and it's extremely hard to control Steve because he has the ball in his hands so much." Stoudemire: "I think in the 4th quarter Jim Jackson did a great job of stepping up. He's a veteran leader and he's one of the guys that is really trying to get to the finals and really trying to win a championship. You know, we are too, but Jim is 34 years old and he's ready to get the job done. He did a great in the 4th quarter to get us started." Shawn Marion: "Jimmy came in and played big tonight. He stepped up, hit some shots by the basket and had a big 3. Whoever gets it going, we feed off that. We always do that. Whoever got it going tonight, everybody was going to feed off each other. Everything worked tonight. We got to do what we wanted to do. We were just a little tight on both ends of the court to begin the game, and once we got an opening we got loose." Marion on defensing Nowitzki: "He's not going to eat me up 1-on-1. I'm going to continue to play him the best I can. He's going to hit some shots when he's shooting like that, but at the same time, I'm going to make it hard for him." Quentin Richardson on game 6: "Whatever we did tonight, we're going to have to play 10 times harder. Their backs are against the wall now, and it's win or go home. We know they are going to play like that, and we have to play like we are in the same situation." Jim Jackson on his 4th quarter outburst: "We were struggling a little bit and it was just taking advantage of opportunities in the game. We had to attack the basket. It wasn't anything mentally I told myself I needed to do. It just happened. You just try to get yourself involved in the game and see how it played out." Jackson: "I am a playmaker. I played point guard in high school, college, and in the NBA I am used to handling that ball a lot so there are a lot of things I can do. It is just a matter of timing and when and if you can do it." Jackson on his foul at the end of the 3rd quarter: "That was great a play by Stack. If he wasn't shooting so well I probably wouldn't have jumped at him, but he was hot. That was a mental error by me and I know not to do that again." Avery Johnson: "Well I thought that tonight it was a tale of 2 halves. We had the tempo that we wanted in the 1st half. Obviously Nash still hurt us in the 1st half, but he was a monster in the 2nd half. We came into tonight's game trying to cut off some of his passing angles. We did not follow the game plan and they just shredded us tonight, shredded us to pieces. I am so disappointed right now. I'm just so disappointed. We didn't get the effort. We didn't get the energy that we needed. And right now during the semi-finals - and I know that some of my guys are new to this - there has to be a 1-on-1 challenge. You have to take pride in what you're doing out there. If somebody is scoring a lot of points, you've got to get tougher defensively. We just didn't get that individual effort and we didn't get it collectively, especially in the 2nd half. So again Nash played like an MVP tonight. We had no answers for him. We tried every single thing humanly possible. But again, you can try all of the different things that you want that are simple, but unless you get the individual energy and keep your composure and concentration, especially on the road, you're not going to win. So we're very disappointed with this loss. They out-played us, they out-everything us, and they deserved to win this game. But we'll be back game 6, we'll be at home, and hopefully we can come out and play with the type of energy we played with in the 1st half and sustain it for the whole game." Johnson on after 3 quarters: "Yeah, it's still even though we went into [the 4th] with a 1-point lead, you could still feel that we were going to get burned if we kept doing the same things that we were doing. So again, we just didn't have, we probably should have had a bigger lead at that point. Just too many break downs. You can't allow a guy to just run around like this and just score at will, uncontested shots are ridiculous. So we'll watch the film, get back on it. You know, our guys have responded all year and this is going to be a great time to respond because this is not the best of 3 any more. It's a 1-game series." Johnson: "We couldn't defend them. Again, we allowed too many uncontested shots. Any time you get 66 points in the paint, that number should probably be for 3 games, you know, 66 points in the paint. It's my responsibility to get this team ready to play and to keep them on the right track, so obviously I didn't do a very good job and we'll try to do a better job the next game." Johnson on Jackson: "He's been hurting us the whole series. Jimmy Jackson's been hurting us. He did it with Houston last year in the playoffs, he played well. He played well for Sacramento the year before. He meant that he didn't want to play for a bad team. So he's a hungry player, you see. When you're a hungry basketball player - you look at what Alonzo Mourning is doing right now. He is a hungry player, all right, he understands that his whole life is on the line with playing basketball. Jimmy Jackson is a hungry player. I don't care how good of a coach you are, some of the things that Jimmy Jackson is doing out there on the court, some of the things that Stackhouse is doing out there on the court, you can't coach it, all right. I don't care how many championships you got, there is just a will to win in those types of players and you can't coach it." Dirk Nowitzki on his eye: "It's good. I think it was really, really fortunate. He just hit my eyelid. It's a little swollen, but I iced it during the game and it felt fine. So I was really lucky, I guess, on that play." Nowitzki: "I thought the 4th quarter we never really found a way to stop them. I thought they had everything going. They made some big shots. Steve came off the pick-and-roll very aggressive and was wide open in kind of like the 15-foot area, and he's so deadly there going left. And Amare had a couple of big plays. You know, in game 4, we took everything else away but Steve, and I thought in the 4th quarter they had a little bit of everything again and I don't think we executed the game plan the way we wanted in the 4th. I mean, we scored enough points to win, but defensively we just had a lot of mental breakdowns and it wasn't enough." Nowitzki on Nash: "I mean, he's a tough little player, we all know it. He's so good off that pick-and-roll. He comes off aggressive shooting and if you have too much, he's great at coming off and finding the shooters. You know, he had a good mix going again today. So we got to find a way to slow him down a little bit. He gave his numbers the last couple of games and we got to, you know, contest his shots a little better when he comes off, but it's easier said than done." Nowitzki: "Well, we're at home now for game 6 and we just have to come out and set the tone as we did in game 4 and really try to jump on them early in the 1st half and really get the crowd going. You know, everything is possible. I think we showed in game 4 that we can win at home, we just got to win the next game, that's how we got to approach it." Nowitzki on team defense in the playoffs: "Well, you got to see that we played pretty good offensive teams. I mean, Houston had it going against us in the 1st round with their shooting outside and Yao and TMac were 2 superstars and they had their way. And now we're playing the best scoring team in the league. We knew we were going to give up some points. Just down the stretch, we just have to be more solid, and that was the case today." Nowitzki on Jackson: "He had some big shots. He actually ran the pick-and-roll really well. We didn't really help much, and he just waltzed right into the middle, had a couple big finishes, had a couple big shots. And you know, he's been big for them. Since Joe's been out, he really stepped in nicely and really is a presence. He's very physical on the defensive end as well. Yeah, he's been great for them. Hopefully we can find a way to shut him down a little bit in game 6 and 7." Michael Finley: "The game is won on both ends, mainly the defensive end. If we weren't scoring, it would have been great to keep them from scoring." Finley on isolation plays: "They're good if everything is rolling, but it looks bad when we're missing and they're coming on the other end and scoring. That's not our game, but we tried to do it anyway and we lost." Jerry Stackhouse: "Things just kind of fell apart for us there for a minute and that was just enough for them to get a run and get some separation on us. It felt good and I thought we had pretty good control of the game, but a team like this is always capable of runs. We're capable of runs. So no lead is safe, especially a 4 or 6 point lead. They got on a good run at the right time. I thought we did enough good things offensively to win the game. Defensively, we still have some things to figure out." Stackhouse: "We can accept Stoudemire getting points in the paint, but Nash getting points in the paint is just unacceptable. I know we're trying to stay with the shooters and trying to stay with Stoudemire on the pick-and-roll, but this coming in the lane and making 8 foot shots. My son can make those. We've just got to figure something out and hopefully we can do it by Friday." Stackhouse on game 6: "We get to go home and do the same thing they did here. Then we can come back here and have a grand finale." Jason Terry: "They just came out with much more urgency then we had and give them credit, they did what they had to do at home. Now it's our job to go back and do what we've got to do. We didn't execute our game plan at all. So we'll watch film, go back and it's our job to win this next game. It wasn't offensively, defensively we've got to get stops. We didn't do that." Josh Howard: "They got a lot of offensive rebounds in the 1st half and a lot of 2nd chance points. When they went up 5 or 6, we kind of rushed our shots. They came ready to play tonight. We didn't execute our game plan. We've got to get ready to play Friday. We've got to be ready."
