Dallas at LA Clippers (October 12) Dallas' 2nd game of the preseason brought out all that is ugly about preseason. The good news was that only those few thousand in attendance had the horror of watching this mess as the game was not on TV. In addition to Keith Van Horn being out with a slightly sprained thumb (could have played in a real game), Avery Johnson elected to rest (no injury reason) Dirk Nowitzki, Jerry Stackhouse, and Erick Dampier. And the Clippers sat their best player Elton Brand (left thigh bruise) as well as Shaun Livingston. Dallas started Jason Terry, Doug Christie, Josh Powell (playing the most minutes of any player in the game at 36 minutes), Josh Howard, and DeSagana Diop. Terry, Christie, and Howard all played less than 20 minutes. The game stayed close in the 1st quarter with neither team leading by more than 5 points. Dallas led 27-25 after 1. The Clippers scored 7 straight points to go up 45-36 with 2:45 left and they would end up leading by 9 at the half at 52-43. It was a long quarter as the whistles kept blowing and stopped play on almost every possession down the stretch in the 2nd quarter. And it got really ugly in the 3rd quarter as Dallas could not buy a basket and the Clippers opened the quarter with a 15-2 run to go up 67-45 with 6:30 remaining - with Dallas' first points of the quarter coming 5 minutes into the quarter. The Clippers led in the 20s the rest of the quarter and led 80-55 after 3. The Clippers out-scored Dallas 28-12 in the 3rd. The 4th quarter was hard for even the most ardent fans to focus on as both teams went deep into their preseason rosters and the Clippers had such a large lead. Dallas did finally start scoring some, including hitting several 3-pointers, and out-scored the Clippers 25-15 in the quarter. But the Mavs never got closer than 13 points and ended up losing by 15 points. The Clippers won 95-80. Since I did not watch the game (listened to the radio), it was a preseason game that was a blowout early, and Dallas did not play so many key players, I'm not breaking down the meaningless numbers or pointing out players' performances for this game.
