Dallas at Orlando (January 23) Orlando was playing the 2nd night of a back-to-back and the 4th game in 5 nights. Dallas took advantage by jumping out to a 9-1 start. A layup by Grant Hill with 7:55 left gave Orlando their first field goal of the game (they had hit 5 free throws, though) and pulled the Magic within 5-9. But Dallas then went on an 11-2 run go to up 23-9 with 3:45 to go. 6 straight points by Dirk Nowitzki gave Dallas a 29-11 lead with 2:10 remaining. A 3-pointer by Jerry Stackhouse gave Dallas a 19 point lead, but Jameer Nelson answered with a 3-pointer with 30 seconds to go and that was the last bucket of the quarter. Dallas led 34-18 after 1. Nowitzki had 11 points. Orlando pulled within 27-40 with 9:05 remaining, but a 3-pointer by Josh Howard kicked of a 15-3 Dallas run to give the Mavs a 55-30 lead with 4:35 left. Dallas led 61-39 with a minute remaining, but Orlando scored the last 6 points (4 off of free throws) of the quarter. Dallas led 61-45 at the half. JHoward had 19 points in the half. Devean George opened the 3rd quarter with a 3-pointer. A 3-point play by Hill pulled Orlando within 52-68 with 8:20 left, but Dallas scored the next 4 points. Dallas led 85-65 with 3 minutes to go, but Orlando closed the quarter with a 13-4 run, capped by a jumper by Nelson with a second left in the quarter. Dallas led 89-78 after 3. Hedo Turkoglu had 10 points in the 3rd quarter. A jumper by Nelson pulled Orlando within 80-89 with 11:15 left, but Dallas then scored the next 7 points to go up 96-80 with 8:30 to go as Orlando missed 5 straight shots. A 3-pointer by Jason Terry gave Dallas a 103-83 lead with 5:05 remaining and Orlando could get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way. Dallas won 111-95. A sluggish start and poor finished by the Magic helped Dallas to the win as Dallas out-scored Orlando 55-35 in the 1st and 4th quarters. The Magic did put up a fight and didn't give up in the middle 2 quarters, but Dallas led the entire game and Orlando pulled within a single-digit deficit only once after the first 6 minutes of the game. It was a game that Dallas worried about as the Mavs usually struggle in Orlando. But not this night. Dallas shot 55.8% (43-77) FG including 8-21 3-pointers and Orlando shot 44.3% (27-61) FG including 7-13 3-pointers. The free throw line kept the game from being a total blowout as Orlando attempted 27 more free throws. Dallas shot 17-20 FT and Orlando shot 34-47 FT. Dallas out-rebounded Orlando 35-31, but the Mavs only had 4 offensive rebounds (but Orlando was only slightly better with 7 offensive boards, despite shooting a much lower field goal percentage. Dallas did a good job of sharing the ball with 26 assists and were clean with the ball in only turning it over 8 times. Orlando had 15 assists and 12 turnovers. The win was Dallas' 8 straight. Dirk Nowitzki flirted with a triple-double for the 2nd time this month (coming up a couple of assists short both times). He had 33 points on 12-17 FG and 9-10 FT, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists. Josh Howard had 25 points and 4 rebounds. Jason Terry shot 4-9 3-pointers, but only shot 1-6 2-pointers. He had 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists. Devean George got the starting nod as Devin Harris recovers from the flu and with Orlando starting a tall backcourt. George had 7 points and 5 rebounds in 35 minutes. Harris had 13 points and 3 assists in 25 minutes. Erick Dampier hit all 3 of his shots for 6 points (missed a free throw, though) and had 3 rebounds in just 10 minutes has he was plagued by foul trouble. DeSagana Diop also had foul trouble as Dallas struggled with Dwight Howard. Diop had 4 points on 2-2 FG and 5 rebounds in 25 minutes. With the 2 centers in foul trouble, DJ Mbenga saw some 1st half action. Mbenga missed his only shot attempt and had 3 fouls in 7 minutes. Jerry Stackhouse had 7 points and 3 assists and Greg Buckner had 2 points. Although he ended up with a double-double, Dwight Howard did not have a monster game as he missed shots and free throws. Howard had 15 points on 4-10 FG and 7-14 FT and 14 rebounds. Jameer Nelson had a nice outing with 23 points and 5 assists. Grant Hill had 15 points including 9-11 FT and Tony Battie had 7 points including 2-6 FG and 6 rebounds. Quotes Avery Johnson: "We got off to a really good start. The guys came out focused. Fortunately the Magic missed a lot of shots early, and we were able to get a lead and our 1st and 4th quarters were good defensively and offensively. We swung the ball, we moved the ball, we found the open man. Dirk had a huge night for us, almost a triple-double. DeSagana had some big blocks for us and big steals. Dampier was battling some early foul trouble. Devin Harris had one of his best games in a while tonight, getting to the basket and passing the ball. So again, we knew it was going to be tough. We haven't really played well here in a long time, and I didn't mention it to the players but it was in the back of my mind. But the Magic are a very tough young team and we knew it was going to be a dog fight. We knew they weren't going to quit, so fortunately we were able to withhold them and hold them off and finish the game." Johnson: "We got a good cushion there, got up by 25. But like all teams, they were going to fight back and we took a couple of bad shots in that stretch and didn't execute as good, but again, our men, they really know how to handle adversity. They stormed back on us and cut it to I think 11 or something, and we were still able to hold them off." Johnson on Harris not starting: "We have come to the conclusion that no matter what our record is, sometimes, maybe 2 or 3 times this year, Devin is at a big disadvantage guarding 6-8, 230 pound 2-guards. So we thought we would get to this point sometime during the season, we just wanted to get it halfway through the season and see how George would fit in. There are certain teams that he matches up better against and we thought the way George played defense on Grant Hill early in the game was big for us to have that size out there." Johnson on if Harris is still the starting guard: "He is. Nobody lost their job. He didn't lose it because he was sick. We were getting to this point anyway." Johnson on George starting: "I think it went well. We have had games against Kobe and McGrady and a lot of those big 2-guards, and we are just too small. You guys have heard me say, there are some games that our 2 point guards, we can't really get away with playing those 2 guys early. Again, it is just giving us a little versatility to be able to do something else, but Devin Harris is still our guy." Josh Howard on George starting: "When we play against big teams, yeah, he gives us that extra range out there where we are able to switch. He can guard in the post, we were really trying to put Devean down in the post in situations like that. It's good that we have options like that, and if it wasn't him, it probably would have been Buck [Buckner]. So, we have options, and it's good." Howard: "We knew they were riding off of a back-to-back, so we wanted to get out there and run and we just stuck to the game plan. That was it." Howard on defending Dwight Howard: "Make sure all of his shots were difficult and make sure we kept him off the glass." Jerry Stackhouse: "We just tried to set the tone early and that was what carried us through the night." Brian Hill: "We saw a pretty good team. Obviously we can't spot a team a 16 point 1st quarter, especially a good team like that, and win the game. They ran by us early in the game, shot over us, went around us to start the game, and we tried to play catch up from that point on. It was too hard to do with a team of this caliber." Hill on the 2nd night of a back-to-back: "I can't use that as an excuse. Did they have an advantage? Sure they did, but its part of the NBA schedule and there isn't much you can do about it. Sure our guys were tired, but you still have to come out and play, that's just the way this league is." Hill on free throw shooting: "We only made 34 of the 47 and a lot of those misses were early when we needed them. They approached the game the right way, they knew we played last night, they knew it was our 4th game in 5 nights and they came out and forced the tempo of the game right from the beginning and shot the heck out of the ball. When you're down at the end of the 1st quarter by 16 and you loose the game by 17 you can't spot a team that many points that early." Hill on Howard's free throw shooting: "I wouldn't call it a slump - he's never been a good free throw shooter. He's working hard at it and trying to get better at it, that's one of the areas that he really has to work on. Obviously if you throw the ball to him during the course of the game he's going to shoot a lot of free throws." Keith Bogans: "They're tough, they like to play an up-and-down tempo. They like to move the ball up and down. We play a little different, we like to slow it up and execute. They just try and get up-and-down. Sometimes they shoot the ball with 23, 24 seconds on the shot clock." Bogans on Nowitzki: "He's a tough player, that's why he's an All-Star. He's one of the best players in the league and he's 7-feet tall. Plays on the wing." Keyon Dooling: "We really wanted to come out and have a good performance against them. They are kind of the measuring stick. Dallas and the Heat because they were both in the finals last year. We got ourselves in a hole and couldn't get out of it." Dooling: "Every team plays 82 games, every teams plays a certain amount of preseason games. So there are going to be stretches where you play a lot of games and a lot of stretches where you get to have rest. Just comes with the territory, so everybody has to go through it. I don't think that was a big factor tonight. Tonight, it came down to executing and Dirk and a lot of other things. But fatigue wasn't a factor." Dooling: "That team is loaded over there. You've got guys that can put the ball in the basket and they're defending at a really high level. They're whole demeanor for the team has really changed for the better. It's a joy to watch. That's what we need to be. That's what type of team we need to be." Dooling: "There's no thing like playing perfect. Even against the best teams, they're vulnerable. Everybody's team can be beaten." Travis Diener: "Phoenix has guys that run a little bit more, but Dallas has guys at multiple positions that can beat you. With Phoenix, it pretty much all starts with Nash and that's a good thing. Right now, Dallas is the team to beat." Diener on 4 games in 5 nights: "It's not easy. Every team goes through a stretch in the schedule that might not be fair. But we've got to deal with that. We can't get out and down 16 in the 1st quarter. We played hard the rest of the way, but they're too talented for that to happen." Dallas was ice cold throughout the game and opened it shooting 1-8 FG as Chicago jumped out to an 11-2 lead with 8 minutes remaining. Chicago led 15-6 with 6:10 to go and the Bulls scored the next 8 points to go up 23-6 with 2:35 left as Dallas missed 6 straight shots (and then missed 2 more). A jumper by Jerry Stackhouse with 55 seconds to go ended Dallas' over 5 minutes shooting drought. Dallas was able to score 7 points in the last minute of the quarter - doubling their scoring output from the first 11 minutes. Chicago led 27-13 after 1. It was Dallas' lowest scoring quarter of the season as the Mavs shot just 5-23 FG including Josh Howard shooting 0-7 FG. Ben Gordon, who started, had 12 points. Chicago led in double-digits until a layup by Devin Harris pulled Dallas within 25-34 with 6:40 left. But Dallas then missed 4 shots and Chicago scored 5 straight points to go up 39-25 with 5:30 to go. A 3-pointer by Andres Nocioni gave Chicago a 45-29 lead with 3:55 remaining, but Dallas then went on a 12-2 run to close the quarter as Chicago missed their last 7 shots (and hit 2 free throws). Chicago led 47-41 at the half. Dirk Nowitzki had 10 points in the 3rd quarter. Chicago shot 43% FG and Dallas shot 28% FG in the half. Luol Deng scored the first 4 points of the 3rd quarter to give Chicago a 51-41 lead with 10:15 left, but Dallas then went on a 6-2 mini-run to pull within 48-53 with 7:50 remaining. Chicago led 51-57 with 4:45 left and the Bulls scored the next 8 points to go up 65-51 with 2:25 to go - Stackhouse ended the run with a 3-pointer. Chicago led 67-56 after 3. Devean George opened the 4th quarter with a 3-pointer as the Mavs somehow continued to hang around. A layup by Howard (only his 2nd field goal of the game) pulled Dallas within 67-72 with 7:20 left. Gordon then hit a jumper and Howard converted a 3-point play to pull Dallas within 4 points. A 3-pointer by Nowitzki pulled Dallas within 76-79 with 4:30 to go, but P.J. Brown hit a short jumper and Kirk Hinrich nailed a 3-pointer to give Chicago an 84-76 lead with 3:25 left. Nowitzki did answer with a 3-pointer. The teams traded 2 points and then Brown hit consecutive buckets to give Chicago a 90-81 lead with 1:15 remaining. A layup by Howard pulled Dallas within 7 points, but Chicago hit 6 straight free throws to ice the game. A layup by DJ Mbenga with 15 seconds left capped the scoring. Chicago won 96-85. The only question about this game was how the heck it was not a blowout. It was easily the poorest shooting game for Dallas this season. Although happy with the win, Chicago has to be kicking themselves for making this game so difficult. There were no positives for Dallas and the Mavs just have to shrug their shoulders and say it was just one of those games where everything goes wrong. Dallas shot just 31.2% (29-93) FG including 7-23 3-pointers and Chicago shot 42.9% (36-84) FG including 5-10 3-pointers. Chicago shot 19-24 FT and Dallas shot 20-23 FT. Chicago out-rebounded Dallas 59-45 including 20-19 offensive. The only thing Dallas did do well was not turning the ball over. Dallas had just 8 turnovers and Chicago had 15 turnovers. Dallas' latest winning streak came to an end at 8 games. Who would have thought that fricken P.J. Brown would be the difference maker in this game. He had 3 key buckets late in the 4th quarter to keep Dallas at bay. Brown finished with 12 points and 9 rebounds including 6 offensive. Though he normally has better games when he comes off the bench, Ben Gordon had a solid outing as a starter. He had a game high 30 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Luol Deng had 21 points and 9 rebounds including 5 offensive. Kirk Hinrich also had some key points late in the 4th quarter and finished with 15 points including 3-4 3-pointers. He also had 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Ben Wallace didn't do much besides rebound, but there were lots of rebounds in this game and he grabbed plenty. Wallace had 5 points on 1-5 FG and 3-6 FT and 17 rebounds. He was credited with 4 blocks, but I think the stats keepers were a little generous there. With Gordon starting, Chicago only got 12 points from their bench. How bad was it for Dallas? Only Erick Dampier (3-5 FG), Greg Buckner (3-4 FG), and DJ Mbenga (1-1 FG) shot above 50% FG. The 3 top scores of Dirk Nowitzki, Josh Howard, and Jason Terry combined for a miserable 15-56 FG. Nowitzki did finished with a double-double of 28 points on 7-22 FG and 12-13 FT and 11 rebounds including 5 offensive. Terry had 12 points including 4-14 FG and 6 assists. Howard had a miserable outing with just 9 points including 4-20 FG and 0-5 3-pointers. How bad was it? Even his little runner, which is usually money, wasn't falling. He did have 8 rebounds including 5 offensive. Jerry Stackhouse had 16 points off the bench. Devin Harris played just 18 minutes and had 2 points on 1-3 FG and 2 rebounds. Dampier had 7 points and 6 rebounds. DeSagana Diop missed his 2 shots and had 8 rebounds. He did have a nice 3rd quarter where he gave the Mavs a bit of a spark with his energy and aggressiveness. Devean George had 3 points on 1-7 FG and 1-3 3-pointers. Anthony Johnson missed his 2 attempts and had 2 assists in 3 minutes and DJ Mbenga hit his only shot for 2 points for his only stats in 30 seconds of play. Quotes Scott Skiles: "That was a good win over a good club. Our defense was good. We had points in the game where we were not playing well and our defense kept us in there. Some of our ball handling miscues caused us a little trouble but we were able to hang in there. There have been some games where that has gotten us into big trouble and we hung our heads a little bit and not be able to come back from it. Tonight we were able to regroup, our guys hung together and then we made some big plays at the end of the game that enabled us to win." Skiles on defending Nowitzki: "I thought it was real good, mainly P.J. Brown was the best on him. Luol was on him a little bit and also did a good job. I thought he was outstanding in getting a hand up on his shot and trying to make him take difficult shots. And when Dirk finally did get some good looks he was not able to get them to go down until late in the game." Skiles on Dallas' shooting: "Probably it is always a little bit of both. I felt Josh Howard got 2 or 3 good looks early in the game that he was not able to get to go down. And then other times we played pretty good defense on him. It was a little bit of both, but my guys deserve a lot of credit for their defensive effort. This is a team you can play great defense against and they can still rain shots on you. Our overall defensive effort tonight was very good." Skiles: "We just talked in the locker room, this is the kind of win, if you are smart you can build on it. We did not play a flawless game, but we won. You can learn from things that happened tonight, that you beat a quality team. You have another one coming in Saturday and then we go on the road. We have been in this position where we won a couple games, looked pretty good and then reverted back. We have a chance again where we beat a quality club and looked like a pretty good team for long stretches in that game and we need to build on it." Ben Gordon: "One thing this team does really well is come out and really established ourselves early and kind of put teams back on their heels." Gordon on the win: "'Hopefully it motivates us and gives us confidence to realize we can beat anyone in the NBA when we're playing the right way, the way we're supposed to play." Luol Deng: "We said this was a big game for us. We had to come out and play our best. This was a good test. We think they are the best team in the NBA right now, so it was a good test. We got the job done. We all came to play today. It was a great team win. We just have to be consistent. We know we can play with teams like that. Our lack of consistency is keeping us where we are at." P.J. Brown: "Hopefully, this win will help us a lot. We know we have been inconsistent this month and it has not been the type of basketball we want to play. But we beat the best team in the league tonight. Hopefully, we can learn from this and take something from it and get some kind of winning streak going." Brown: "Tonight things were rolling and the ball felt good. Sometimes you have to want to take the shot. I got in a nice little rhythm and after that I just kept shooting. It was just one of those nights. I didn't think we needed much from me on the offensive end. Most important was for me to stay with Dirk and not let him have a monster night." Brown on Nowitzki: "It was important for me to stay with Dirk most of the night. He ended up having 28 and 11, but he was not the usual Dirk tonight. You have to crowd him. He is a rhythm player. I tried to get in his face early and make it tough on him. Hopefully, his legs get a little tired and at the end of the game he will start missing those Js. He still hit a couple of big shots down the stretch, but I thought it was a great team effort on him." Avery Johnson: "Tonight the Bulls were outstanding from start to finish. They came out ready to play. They drove on us, just made us look bad. Even when we started the season at 0-4, we had one game at Houston like this. We just didn't have it at any aspect of our game. We were low on energy, low in concentration, and low in execution. That's just not typical for this team. Tonight our shots didn't fall. We had too many turnovers and I called no good plays. Give the Bulls credit. We just got out-hustled and out-rebounded." Johnson: "Ben Wallace didn't play this well at Dallas. Also, P.J. really hurt us tonight. They shot 42%, but it seemed like 52%. I thought it was a tribute to our team that we were shooting 28% and still in it. This team we saw tonight didn't look like the Mavericks. We try to go out and win. Tonight we just didn't have it from start to finish." Dirk Nowitzki on Wallace: "He's an excellent defensive player. He can do a great job protecting the paint and that's why he's considered one of the best defensive players in this league." Nowitzki: "Any time you lose a game you are disappointed. Even though were were horrible tonight, we were down only 3 with about 5 minutes to go. Their team just got it done down the stretch. They made several big shots and played with good intensity all night." Nowitzki: "It's a disappointing loss, but sometimes a loss wakes everybody up again and we know we haven't arrived." Nowitzki: "I thought we didn't execute very well offensively. We had a lot of good looks that we normally make. It was just an all around bad offensive night for us." Josh Howard: "To be gone for 4 or 5 days is tough. Overall the trip was positive. Tonight's game leaves us a bitter taste in our mouth." Howard on missing becoming contagious: "Sometimes it's like that. You feel there's nothing you can do. What you can do is try to get a big board or steal or something like that, that can get you going." Jerry Stackhouse: "Obviously their team got off to a very good start. We fought back to try to give ourselves an opportunity. But every time we cut it to 4 or 5, they hit a big shot. We expected to win this game even with all that happened. You have to give their team credit. Most teams you can get them to crack if you get a few stops. P.J. Brown, not to take anything away from him, but we've watched tape and he hasn't done anything, but he hit several big shots tonight." Stackhouse on defending Chicago: "Your coverage has to be strong. We want to be strong in our coverage. They run a pick-and-roll and it just seems we're a step slow." Stackhouse: "We don't like to lose. We don't like this feeling. We don't like to answer these questions. I'd rather answer why we moved the ball well, good defense. Tonight we can't do that. That's why we try to play hard every night. With an 82 game schedule, you're going to have some tough nights. Tonight was one of those nights."
