Indiana at Dallas (January 4) Jerry Stackhouse returned to action after missing the last 6 games with a sprained left ankle. The Mavs did not look sharp in the 1st quarter and Indiana took advantage with consecutive 3-point plays to take a 12-4 lead with 8:30 left. Although Dallas still struggled, Indiana was unable to build their lead larger than 9 points. A 3-point play by Stephen Jackson gave Indiana a 21-12 lead with 4:40 to go. Anthony Johnson scored the last 4 points of the quarter. Indiana led 24-19 after 1. Dallas only shot 35% FG and Indiana out-rebounded Dallas 17-10. Indiana continued to hold a single-digit lead in the 2nd quarter, but Dallas started playing better. A layup by Greg Buckner pulled Dallas within 27-30 with 9:10 to go. Indiana led 34-29 with 8:20 remaining and Dallas went on an 8-2 run to take their first lead at 37-36 with 5 minutes left. The lead went back and forth a couple of times and the largest lead the rest of the half was just 3 points. Indiana scored the last 3 points of the quarter to go up 47-45 at the half. Dallas shot 12-21 FG and Indiana shot 10-20 FG in the 2nd quarter. Indiana scored the first 2 buckets of the 3rd quarter to go up 51-45 with 11 minutes remaining. A 3-pointer by Al Harrington gave Indiana a 58-50 lead with 8:45 left. Dallas then scored the next 8 points to tie the game at 58-58 with 7 minutes to go. After a jumper by Jamaal Tinsley, Dallas scored the next 4 points to go up 64-60 with 5:05 left. Dallas led 69-67 with 1:20 left and Indiana connected on 4 straight free throws to take a 4 point lead. A 3-pointer by Devean George with 12 seconds left capped the quarter scoring. Indiana led 73-72 after 3. Harrington had 10 points in the 3rd quarter. Marquis Daniels, getting extended minutes against his former team, scored the first 2 jumpers of the 4th quarter to give Indiana a 77-72 lead with 11:10 remaining. Indiana led 80-77 with 9:10 left and the Pacers then missed their next 10 shots (including 4 on one possession) and Dallas scored the next 9 points, capped by a 3-point play by Josh Howard, to go up 86-80 with 6:15 to go. Jermaine O'Neal converted a 3-point play and Harrington hit a jumper to pull Indiana within 85-86 with 5:35 remaining, but Dallas then scored the next 6 points to go up 92-85 with 4:25 left. Dallas then went cold, but Indiana could only score 4 points, all on free throws, to pull within 89-92 with 2:30 remaining. Dallas missed 4 times on one possession, but Dirk Nowitzki lobbed to Howard for the layup to finally give Dallas a bucket on the play. Howard was fouled and converted the free throw to give Dallas a 95-89 lead with 1:45 to go. Indiana collapsed and would not score again until 18 seconds left as they committed 3 turnovers and missed a shot. Devin Harris scored 5 points to give Dallas a 100-89 lead with 55 seconds left. 2 free throws by Harrington capped the scoring. Dallas won 100-91. It wasn't a good start and a miserable game by Jason Terry, but the Mavs persevered and came out with a tough win. Dallas out-scored Indiana 28-18 in the 4th quarter as the Pacers shot just 5-21 FG in the quarter. For the game, Dallas shot 46.3% (38-82) FG including 4-8 3-pointers and Indiana shot 43.2% (35-81) FG including 2-14 3-pointers. Dallas shot 20-24 FT and Indiana shot 19-24 FT. Indiana killed Dallas on the boards in out-rebounding Dallas 50-38, but Dallas did out-rebound Indiana 16-14 in the 4th quarter. Dallas had 13 turnovers and Indiana had 18 turnovers. Dallas has won 12 straight games. It was a 3-headed game for the Mavs - and the 3rd head was not Jason Terry. Terry was so bad in this game that he actually got pulled. And he wasn't just bad on offense - his defense was non-existent. Terry had just 1 point including 0-4 FG, 3 assists, and 3 turnovers in 19 minutes. But Devin Harris stepped up with Terry's struggles. Harris had career high (regular season) 24 points on 8-10 FG and 8-9 FT and 5 assists. Josh Howard had a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki had 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Erick Dampier missed all 5 shots he attempted and had 5 rebounds in 28 minutes. Devean George again played well and had 13 points including 5-7 FG, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals. Greg Buckner had 5 points and Anthony Johnson had 6 points. DeSagana Diop missed his 2 shots and had 2 rebounds in 12 minutes. The Mavs limited Jerry Stackhouse to playing in just the 1st half as he comes back from injury. Stack had 6 points on 3-4 FG and 2 rebounds in 12 minutes in his return. Al Harrington led the way for Indiana with 24 points. He also had 11 rebounds. Jermaine O'Neal also had a double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds. He also had 5 assists and 5 blocks. Jamaal Tinsley had 12 points on 6-18 FG, 6 assists, and 5 turnovers before fouling out with a minute left. Marquis Daniels had averaged just 16 minutes, but got more playing time in facing his former team. Daniels had 10 points on 5-9 FG in 24 minutes. Jeff Foster had a lot of rebounds early and finished with 12 rebounds including 7 offensive to go with his 8 points. Special mention needs to be made for ref Ed Malloy for doing an absolutely terrible job. Quotes Avery Johnson: "Tonight was another one of those boxing match type of games. It was 2 teams that were getting after it. There were a lot of swings in the game tonight. We didn't have the best of 1st halves, but we came out in the 2nd half and wanted to cut into their rebound margin some. They got us 9-1 on the boards early in the game. They had lots of energy. We knew they had about 4 days off, so they would be well rested. But our guys responded and we got some stops when we needed to. We had some key performances, but no greater performance than our bench. Our bench was huge. Even the few minutes that Stackhouse played kept them at bay and did not let them get away from us too far. Devean George helped, Anthony Johnson played well in the 1st half. Buckner really helped us to go along with Devin Harris' performance. We had a lot of contributions. Josh was being Josh again tonight. He and Dirk were battling inside against a really physical team. Devin didn't do much his stat sheet doesn't look good, but he had a block in there that was key for us. I told him that when your stats don't look good, but your team wins, that is what we are really interested in. Gutsy performance by our team." Johnson on the centers: "They were making sure that they were respecting our 5s. Our 5s didn't get any free passes tonight. Sometimes you have nights where people don't guard them as much. But Indiana kept a body on those guys. They realized those guys were pretty good rebounders. When they were driving the basketball, they were driving really hard at them trying to get them to commit. This wasn't one of their better games. This wasn't one of Jason Terry's better games by any stretch of the imagination. We are hoping that we have everybody ready to go tomorrow night." Johnson on the defensive efforts in the 4th quarters: "That's a good stat. We hope to continue that trend. Once we figure out what's going on out there on the court, we make our necessary adjustments. I think the key to it all, like I have been saying, even though you guys have me labeled as an defensive coach, our offense is a big key in having balance and making sure that we drive the ball. We had 44 points in the paint. That's what I'm excited about." Jason Terry: "He [Johnson] saw I wasn't being aggressive, so he changed it and it worked." Devin Harris: "Definitely, we struggled a little bit in the 1st half trying to figure out what they were doing. It's a team that we haven't seen before, but we definitely picked it up in the 2nd half. We kind of got the running game going, rebounded well, got some stops, and everything started to fall for us." Harris: "Getting stops allows us to run and change up what we are doing on defense and that kind of threw them off. The driving was there all night long. They kind of forced us in to jump shots 1st half, but everyone made a conscious effort to attack the basket, including me in the 2nd half. We got some easy finishes and got the lead and the win." Harris: "We really pushed the ball in transition to get some easy baskets and I was able to finish. We mixed it up and got some easy baskets." Harris on Terry's struggles: "Nobody has a perfect game. That's what's good about our team. We pick each other up when it's needed." Devean George on his steals: "We needed to disrupt them. They were getting into a good rhythm and they were beating us on the boards. It really was just a matter of getting into position, try to box out so our teammates could get the ball and just try to get our hands in the passing lane." George on if rebounding is something besides an effort thing: "Not really, rebounding is mainly effort. But they have guys that are fairly athletic and Foster, he goes to the boards every time. His job is to crash the boards and they all do that well. We just had to focus in on that." George on winning close games: "It's very important because when you go through tough times you learn and you get better. It's good to win by 30 points sometimes, but when the game is out of reach you don't learn a lot. In these close games where we have to grind it out, fight it out, when we're not playing well, shooting the ball well, and still find a way to win the game, that builds character. It builds confidence, it builds experience. So these close wins are really good for our team in the long run." Rick Carlisle: "I thought we played really hard the whole night. We made some mistakes, but that's going to happen. Our undoing was 5 turnovers for 9 points in the 4th quarter. They turned up the pressure on us and we needed to handle it better. It's disappointing and it's frustrating for our guys because they really played hard and really wanted to win. But we've got to get ready for the next one on Saturday because none of these games are easy." Carlisle: "We had a lot of great shots that we normally would make, and we had some tough luck on those. At that point, you've got to hang in and get stops and they got some run-outs on us, a couple of guys got to the rim on 3-point plays, and that made it tough. It's a tough place to play. It's the best team in the league, record-wise, for a reason. We showed that we can certainly play with this caliber of team, but to win you've got to be a little more solid in some areas. We're going to keep working to do that." Al Harrington on the 4th quarter: "They just out-executed us in those last 12 minutes. But to that point, we were really battling with them. I wouldn't say they really took us out of anything, but they disrupted what we were trying to do. We couldn't get into our offensive sets as quick we would like to and it forced us to rush shots." Harrington on turnovers: "Coach warned us to stop that. He said that when you turn the ball over to them, they convert it to 2 or 3 every time. That was something we tried to be conscious of - taking care of the basketball. And every time we did [turn it over], they converted." Harrington on if Dallas is one of the toughest places to play: "Yeah, definitely. It's a fun place to play. Their fans are always into it and there are a lot of people here screaming and supporting their guys. We would love to be able to find a way to get a win here." The teams traded leads early on and Dallas led 11-10 with 7:30 to go. San Antonio scored the next 6 points to go up 16-11 with 5;35 left. Consecutive jumpers by Jerry Stackhouse pulled Dallas within 21-23 with 2 minutes remaining, but Dallas would miss their last 3 shots of the quarter and the Spurs scored 6 points, capped by a putback by Fabricio Oberto, to go up 29-21 after 1. Dirk Nowitzki had 10 points. Oberto scored the first 2 layups of the 2nd quarter to give San Antonio their largest lead at 33-21 with 10;15 left, but Dallas did score the next 4 points and San Antonio's lead would hover around 10 points over the next 5 minutes. A jumper by Jason Terry (his first bucket of the game) pulled Dallas within 35-41 with 4:10 to go. But Dallas could get no closer. Neither team scored over the last minute of the quarter until Oberto tipped in a missed shot at the quarter buzzer. San Antonio led 51-40 at the half. Oberto, who averaged 5.5 points coming into the game, had 14 points on 7-7 FG at the half. San Antonio shot 54% FG and Dallas shot 44% FG. San Antonio out-scored Dallas 30-10 in the paint. Dallas looked sharper to open the 3rd quarter and played better defense, but still was unable to make much headway as both teams missed shots and each only scored 2 points over the first 2:15 of the quarter. San Antonio led 62-52 with 5:30 to go and the Spurs went ice cold in missing their next 4 shots. Dallas scored the next 8 points, capped by a 3-pointer by Josh Howard, to pull within 60-62 with 1:45 left. The Spurs were able to hang on to a small lead thanks to free throws. Michael Finley hit a long jumper at the quarter buzzer to give San Antonio a 69-66 lead after 3. Finley's jumper ended a 5 1/2 minute field goal drought for the Spurs. Dallas scored the first 4 points of the 4th quarter to take their first lead since 5 minutes into the game. A 3-pointer by Nowitzki gave Dallas a 73-71 lead with 9:20 remaining, but San Antonio answered with consecutive 3-point plays to go up 77-73 with 8:35 left as first Erick Dampier picked up his 5th foul and then DeSagana Diop picked up his 5th foul. Dallas played the rest of the game without a true center on the court. San Antonio again went through a dry spell in missing their next 6 shots. Dallas scored the next 7 points to go up 80-77 with 4:50 left. Manu Ginobili nailed a 3-pointer and then hit 2 free throws to give San Antonio an 82-80 lead with 2:45 to go, but Nowitzki answered with a driving layup to tie the game. After Ginobili missed, Nowitzki missed on 2 attempts, but Terry caught the airball and laid it in as the shot clock expired to give Dallas an 84-82 lead with 1:45 remaining. Duncan turned the ball over and Nowitzki found Devean George inside for the reverse layup with 1:15 left. After a Spurs' timeout, Duncan hit a short jumper with a minute to go, but Nowitzki answered with a bucket to give Dallas an 88-84 lead with 40 seconds left. Duncan was fouled 8 seconds later and hit 1-2 FT. Nowitzki drove and threw the kick-out pass 3 rows into the stands with 12.7 seconds left. San Antonio called timeout, down by 3 points. Ginobili drove baseline and passed out to a wide open Bruce Bowen in the corner, but his 3-point attempt missed. Oberto got the rebound, but Howard was able to knock the ball loose and then grab the ball and he was intentionally fouled with .6 seconds left. Howard's 2 free throws capped the scoring. Dallas won 90-85. Phew! What a great game it ended up being. It was actually a tale of 2 halves. Dallas did not look good in the 1st half and San Antonio did not look good in the 2nd half. San Antonio shot 54% FG and Dallas shot 44% FG in the 1st half as San Antonio out-scored Dallas 51-40. San Antonio out-rebounded Dallas 19-15 in the 1st half including 6-3 offensive. Dallas shot 47% FG and San Antonio shot 32% FG in the 2nd half as Dallas out-scored San Antonio 50-34. Dallas out-rebounded San Antonio 26-14 including 7-2 offensive in the 2nd half. For the game, Dallas shot 45.5% (35-77) FG including 4-14 3-pointers and San Antonio shot 44.1% (30-68) FG including 4-12 3-pointers. The Spurs hurt themselves at the line by missed 10 free throws (with Tim Duncan missing 7). Dallas shot 16-20 FT and San Antonio shot 21-31 FT. Both teams had 10 turnovers. The assists were low for both teams with Dallas having 16 assists and San Antonio having just 13 assists. The win was Dallas' 13th straight win. Dirk Nowitzki was a stud throughout. He had a game high 36 points, including 10 points in the 4th quarter, and 6 rebounds. (And despite the Spurs fans' usual whining, he wasn't helped by the refs and attempted just 4 free throws.) His defense was questionable at times as he was part of the reason Fabricio Oberto again went off on Dallas, but his offense kept Dallas in the game in the 1st half where he was the only Mav playing well. Josh Howard and Jason Terry got their games going in the 2nd half. Howard had just 3 points including 1-4 FG and 3 rebounds in the 1st half and had 15 points including 6-14 FG and 9 rebounds in the 2nd half. Nowitzki and Howard were the only 2 Mavs in double-digits. Terry shot 1-5 FG in the 1st half and shot 3-5 FG in the 2nd half. Even though his shot was erratic, he had a nice all around game and his defense was a vast improvement over his negative game against Indiana. Terry had 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 assists. Devin Harris' shot also wasn't very good and he had 6 points including 2-9 FG and no assists. The centers didn't get many minutes due to foul trouble. Erick Dampier had 2 points and 3 rebounds in 12 minutes. DeSagana Diop had 5 points and 7 rebounds in 22 minutes. And he had a rare assist when he went on the floor for a loose ball and passed (while sitting on the floor) out to Nowitzki, who hit a 3-pointer. The Mavs again limited Jerry Stackhouse to play in the 1st half as he is fresh back from a sprained ankle. Stack had 4 points in 11 minutes. Devean George, as usual, didn't have many stats but had a positive impact on the game. He had 6 points and 1 rebound in 23 minutes. Greg Buckner had 5 points in 15 minutes and Anthony Johnson missed his only shot and had 1 assist in 7 minutes. After the game, Tim Duncan took the blame for the loss. He said that he failed to accurately recognize when Dallas was going to double-team him and when they were going to play him one-on-one. Avery Johnson used a little trick to help confuse Duncan by yelling "double, double, double" when Duncan had the ball even if a double-team was not coming. Duncan had 18 points including a poor 6-13 FT. He also had 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks. Manu Ginobili was the Spurs' high man with 25 points including 4-6 3-pointers and 9-11 FT. He also had 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. Tony Parker had 15 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists. All 14 of Fabricio Oberto's points came in the 1st half. He shot 7-7 FG, but hardly played in the 2nd half due to Dallas playing a lot without a true center (and Oberto not being fast enough to keep up with Dallas' smaller players). Michael Finley had 6 points on 3-9 FG and 4 rebounds. Brent Barry shot 0-5 FG, Beno Udrih shot 0-6 FG, and Robert Horry did not attempt a shot. Quotes Avery Johnson: "The Spurs jumped on us early in the 1st half. The team lacked a lot of energy in the 1st half. We had a much better 2nd half. I thought we really competed well in the 2nd half. The Mavericks are a very tough-minded team and I feel we showed that tonight. I don't think this game will mean much to either team come playoff time. The Spurs are a championship team/organization and we expect them to play hard every time we see them." Johnson: "Our guys are resilient, tough-minded. Fortunately tonight we scored 1 more point than them. But you're looking at a championship team in the Spurs. I don't think anybody will remember this game at the end of the season because this is still January." Johnson on Nowitzki: "Dirk is a warrior. He guarded Tim Duncan very well tonight. In my opinion, Dirk never gets enough credit and hopefully that will change soon. Dirk is definitely a player who lets his game do all the talking." Dirk Nowitzki: "The Spurs were coming off 2 losses so we expected their best game tonight. In the 1st half, we didn't defend the Spurs well at all. Basically we let them do what ever they wanted. After halftime, our effort was so much better. The team was able to capitalize on the big plays which helped us to take over the momentum of the game. We don't expect to win every game by 20 points, especially when we play the Spurs." Nowitzki: "Early we didn't play well. They got whatever they wanted, beat us to every loose ball, and they got too many offensive rebounds. In the 2nd half, our effort was a lot better. We had a bounce in our step. We kept making big plays." Nowitzki: "During the 1st half, I shot the ball well and I felt really good. During the 2nd half, I really tried to focus on my all-around game and not just scoring. I really have lots of confidence in my teammates and tried to involve them more in the 2nd half." Josh Howard: "Tonight the 1st half killed us. We fought our way into the 2nd half and finally got things together. Coach Johnson has a lot of trust in this team and I think tonight we earned a little more." Howard: "Personally, I didn't do as well as I would have liked to tonight. Thankfully during the 2nd half I was able to get things together and help my team win." Gregg Popovich: "We did a great job, we just came up short. That's all there is to it." Popovich: "They basically scored 88 points [ignoring Dallas' last 2 free throws with .6 seconds left] tonight and if we can hold Dallas to 88 points I'm a happy man. It's a hell of a job on the part of our team. Team defense did a wonderful job against the best team in the league." Tim Duncan: "The effort was there. It's just disappointing. We had opportunities and we had leads. They just played better than us down the stretch." Duncan: "They're a better defensive ball club. They have different players, different athletes that are focused on defense. I don't know how to gage from one time to the next." Duncan on Dallas offensive rebounds: "It just kind of happened. I can't say one thing or another. I don't think they were legitimately just pounding the offensive glass. I think they got a couple bounces and were at the right place at the right time. That's not taking away from anything they did. That's just how it went." Duncan on his play in the 4th quarter: "It was just bad reads on my part. They weren't double-teaming. They weren't doing anything and I wasn't drawing anybody to me and wasn't taking the shots when they were there." Duncan on 3 straight losses: "We never panic. There's always time to panic. We are 34 games into the season. You have to go through ups and downs in a season to build a team and build character in a team. This is our down time and hopefully we can cut it off at this." Tony Parker: "It was a tough loss. You have to give credit to Dallas. They played good and hit shots down the stretch. It was a tough one." Parker on the effort at the end: "Definitely. I thought the effort was there. I thought we played good defense the whole game. Sometimes it just doesn't go our way." Parker: "Well I thought we had a good effort and that's the main thing. We had a couple shots wide open that we couldn't make. I'm not worried about that. I'm happy overall with the effort of our team. Things just didn't go our way." Parker on Dallas' 2nd half offensive rebounds: "It definitely hurt us. We were up by 12 in the 1st half and then the 3rd quarter they came with offensive rebounds, which was bad for us because we had a good lead and we lost it." Manu Ginobili: "We needed it [the win] badly, but we just couldn't take it. We just have to give them credit and realize that we have to improve a lot. The good thing is the season is young still. We have a long way to go so we've got a big challenge here." Ginobili: "Well, against teams like them, with the crowd feeling this game, and knowing how important it was for us, it was easy to focus. The thing is we have to try and maintain that against every single team every night and that's not that easy, but we really have to think about it and bring that juice every night." Ginobili: "They are a good team and talented. There is a reason they have the best record. We just have to make fewer mistakes and be smarter. We played a very good game, but we can do better." Bruce Bowen on his missed 3-pointer: "Who would think that Pop would do that for me at that point? But it totally caught them off guard. That's the thing that's so disappointing - you got a wide open look and then it just didn't go in."
