Dallas at LA Lakers (March 11) The Mavs found themselves in LA after 4 days off against the short-handed Lakers who were missing Lamar Odom and Luke Walton. The game stayed close in the 1st quarter with the Lakers mostly holding a small lead. 4 straight free throws by Kobe Bryant gave the Lakers a 20-13 lead with 3:25 remaining, but Dallas then went on a 15-2 run to go up 28-22 with 20 seconds to go. Dirk Nowitzki was called for goaltending near the quarter's end. Dallas led 28-24 after 1. Nowitzki had 11 points and Bryant had 13 points. Dallas opened the 2nd quarter with an 11-1 run to go up 39-25 with 9:30 left - the last point came on a technical free throw as Smush Parker picked up his 2nd technical of the game and was tossed. It was a 26-5 Dallas run spanning the 2 quarters. The Lakers did scored the next 3 points, but were unable to pull within single-digits. A layup by Bryant pulled the Lakers within 35-46 with 4:30 remaining, but Dallas closed the quarter by scoring the last 13 points, capped by a 3-pointer by Austin Croshere, as the Lakers missed their last 8 shots and committed 3 turnovers. Dallas led 59-35 at the half. Dallas out-scored the Lakers 31-11 in the 2nd quarter. For the half, Dallas shot 49% FG and the Lakers shot 29% FG. The blowout was on early as the Lakers didn't have a rally in them and the Mavs continued to play good defense. A 3-pointer by Jason Terry gave Dallas a 72-45 lead with 6:30 left. A layup by Devin Harris gave Dallas their first 30-point lead at 83-52 with 1:30 remaining. Dallas led 85-58 after 3. Dallas took their largest lead of the game thus far at 92-58 with 8:50 to go. The Lakers did go on a 10-2 run to pull within 68-94 with 4:55 left, but after a Dallas timeout, the Mavs scored the next 11 points to put their lead back in to the 30s. Dallas won 108-72. It was a very surprising blowout win for the Mavs as the team traditionally struggles when facing the Lakers in LA. The Lakers still hold a 46-10 record against Dallas in LA, but this game goes into their record books as the Lakers' largest margin of defeat in LA (36 points). The Lakers were seriously short-handed due to injuries (and then their point guard making a bone-head move in getting ejected early in the 2nd quarter), but the Mavs can take pride in their defense in this game. Part of the Lakers' problems were that the Mavs were anticipating what the Lakers were trying to do and often the defender would beat a Laker player to his spot on the court. As a result, the Lakers shot just 36.8% FG (25-68) including 2-16 3-pointers. Dallas shot 48.1% (38-79) FG including 8-16 3-pointers. Dallas shot 24-28 FT and the Lakers shot 20-33 FT. Dallas out-rebounded the Lakers 46-33 including 10-8 offensive. Dallas had 18 assists and 14 turnovers and the Lakers had 13 assists and 18 turnovers. The win was Dallas' 17th straight. With the early blowout, only Josh Howard played more than 30 minutes. Howard was the high man with 24 points to go with 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Dirk Nowitzki had 19 points and 5 rebounds. Jason Terry had 14 points and 3 assists. DeSagana Diop played very well in this game and had 4 points and 13 rebounds. Erick Dampier had 2 points and 5 rebounds in 19 minutes. Greg Buckner again started and had 2 points on 1-5 FG. Austin Croshere had a nice outing with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Jerry Stackhouse had 13 points. Devin Harris had 10 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Devean George had 4 points including 1-6 FG and 4 rebounds against his former team. Kobe Bryant struggled with his shot in this game and didn't get any help from his teammates. Bryant had 25 points on 6-19 FG and 13-18 FT. He also had 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 turnovers. Kwame Brown had 10 points on 3-4 FG and 4-9 FT. He also didn't start the game as he arrived late at practice due to not changing his clock for daylight savings. No other Laker was in double-digits. Brian Cook had 9 points. Jordan Farmer had 6 points and 5 rebounds. Smush Parker had 2 points, 2 steals, and 3 turnovers in 6 1/2 minutes before his ejection. Quotes Avery Johnson: "We got off to a slow start. We had to call an early timeout there around the 8 minute mark I really didn't like our body language. We weren't moving the ball, we weren't attacking the basket. They were more in an aggressive mindset. But from that point on, we got our game together, we got our defense set." Johnson: "We were pretty physical tonight. That showed, I guess, in how quickly they got in the bonus with some of our fouls. But I thought we were aggressive throughout the rest of the game offensively and defensively. I thought we made it tough on some of their scorers. We had guys like Stackhouse and Josh come alive for us in the 1st half - and Buckner and George and Josh trying to compete as hard as they could on Bryant. We were able to take control of the game and pretty much keep control of it throughout the rest of the game. And we did a decent job on the boards, which I thought would be critical tonight." Johnson on the winning streak: "You know, we really don't look at it like that. It's just 1 game - we just won 1 game - and fortunately we've been able to string together a couple of wins. But we know that some of those wins could have gone either way. That's why we don't really think too much about ourselves in that area. But we are a confident team. We're not overly confident, but it just really feels like 1 game - especially being off for 4 days." Johnson: "I thought we got after it pretty good. I thought we made a concerted effort to try and get some points in the paint. We had some match ups that we thought were favorable for us. Again, Kobe is always somebody that you have to watch. We tried to deny him and fight him as much as we could. And again, they missed some free throws also now, they missed some free throws during that stretch. But again, we made some hard fouls." Johnson: "Again, we had a lead here the last time we were here. Boy, we played some of the worst basketball of the season in the last 6 minutes of [that] game. And that was really disappointing - Kobe was scoring and assisting. And you know they had some of their other players here. So again, we don't want to go too crazy. Odom wasn't here tonight. Walton wasn't here. In this situation, it really causes for other guys to step up - fortunately, we were able to keep them at bay." Dirk Nowitzki: "I think we had 4 days off, worked on some stuff defensively, had some good rest and some good workouts, so I think we came ready to play. Defensively I think we tried to do everything to force Kobe into tough shots and I think we did a good job collectively as a team." Nowitzki on defending Bryant: "Buck [Buckner) started off, Josh was on him some, George was on him some. So we tried to keep a fresh body on him and try to force him into tough shots, and obviously that was the key to the game." Nowitzki on the winning streak: "Well, we all know you're going to lose some games in a 82 game season. You can't win them all, so that streak doesn't really mean anything. Obviously we're going to lose some here and there, but we're trying to get ready for the playoffs. We've got a little month here left before the real dance starts. We're just trying to improve and do all the right things to get us ready for the playoffs. So that's really all we're focusing on." Josh Howard on the winning streak: "I mean, I was around last year when we were on that streak and when it snapped it kind of messed up the season a little bit. When we went into the Finals, it was something that was in the back of our minds. This year, with the 3 streaks we've been on, we've just taken it 1 game at a time. It's a learning experience." Jason Terry: "Coming off 4 days of good solid rest, we wanted to come in here and be aggressive on both ends and execute. Guys did a great job of contesting Kobe, making it tough for him to get easy looks. That was the key to the game." Jerry Stackhouse: "We've been able to do a lot of good things with our defense. Something we learned from the playoffs last year is we have to finish. Momentum's what we're trying to build now, build up enough momentum during the regular season to steam through the playoffs." Phil Jackson: "We are embarrassed today. That was an embarrassing loss for us. There's no excuse for the way we played. I don't care if it's daylight savings - the first day of it - it's still not a good enough excuse." Jackson on Parker's ejection: "There was nothing to say to him. I just said there's nothing to say to that. I don't think he knew he had a technical foul - that was his excuse. He thought he had only 1 technical and that first 1 wasn't a technical, it was a personal foul, but I find that hard to believe." Jackson if someone would replace Parker: "Well, no one came out and played well enough for me to say there's someone else right here to take his job, did there. There was no one else that did a better job so I guess not. Smush has been able to hang on to this job because he has done an adequate job and no one else has been able to replace him." Jackson on Bryant: "I told Kobe at halftime that I thought he was trying to take it all on himself and in the process didn't give the other guys a chance to get started and get things going. I think he felt the urgency and in that regard we tried to even things out a little bit the 2nd half and make some plays and do some things, but there wasn't enough juice in them." Jackson on if he understand's Bryant taking it on him self: "I do. I mean, we're missing 3 starters. He's questioning the quality of players out there - their ability to complete the plays. And when you lose faith in some of your teammates, sometimes you try to do too much and that's something you've got to maintain regardless." Kobe Bryant: "We didn't come ready to play. We played okay in the 1st quarter. 2nd quarter the roof caved in on us on our floor. It was an uphill battle from there on." Bryant on overcoming the loss: "We just got to come to practice and work harder. When times get rough like this, you really have to work harder than you were. You got to be in the gym before practice, you got to stay after practice, and you just got to get it right." Bryant on Dallas: "This team that we played against tonight is a great team. They're playing with a lot of momentum. We caught them at the bad time. They caught us at the right time." Bryant: "Our team is not about having the best talent in the world. Our team is built on chemistry and guys knowing how to play together. So when you take 3 starters out of the lineup and insert guys who are new to these concepts, it makes it difficult." Smush Parker: "I'm frustrated how the ballclub is going in a nosedive. I'm not pleased with my play and I'm not pleased with the team's play. I know I can play better than this." Dallas decided to give the Warriors a helping hand by turning the ball over on their first 3 possessions. Golden State took advantaged of Dallas' miscues and jumped out to an 8-0 lead with 10:10 left. Dallas got on the scoreboard 20 seconds later. Dallas scored 6 straight points to pull within 8-10 with 8:25 remaining, but were unable to pull even. 2 free throws by Greg Buckner gave Dallas their first lead of the game at 20-19 with 4:15 to go. Golden State took the lead back on their next possession and the game stayed close the rest of the quarter. The game was tied at 33-33 after 1. Dirk Nowitzki had 10 points. Dallas' poor defense continued in the 2nd quarter and the Mavs got turnover happy again. Golden State opened the 2nd quarter with a 15-2 run to go up 48-35 with 6:15 to go as Dallas missed 8 shots and turned the ball over 5 times. A layup by Erick Dampier with 5:40 left gave Dallas their first field goal of the quarter. Josh Howard got poked in the eye midway through the quarter and did not return until a few minutes into the 3rd quarter. Devean George only played briefly in the quarter as his knee obviously was bothering him (and the Warriors attacked him when he was in) and he did not play the rest of the game. 2 Golden State 3-pointers surrounded a Jason Terry jumper and gave the Warriors a 60-43 lead with 2:30 remaining. Golden State led 64 -51 at the half. Mickael Pietrus had 10 points in the 2nd quarter. Golden State shot 63% FG and Dallas shot 42% FG in the half. Things did not improve for Dallas during halftime as the Mavs' struggles continued. Golden State opened the quarter with an 8-2 run to go up 72-63 with 9:55 left. A 3-pointer by Al Harrington and jumper by Stephen Jackson gave Golden State their first 20-point lead at 79-58 with 8:05 to go. Dallas then went on a 5-1 spurt to pull within 63-80 with 6:25 left, but Golden State answered with a 12-1 run to take a commanding 92-64 lead with 3:25 remaining. Golden State led 98-69 after 3. Golden State out-scored Dallas 65-36 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Consecutive dunks early in the 4th quarter gave the Warriors their largest lead at 102-71 with 10:30 left and the quarter was entirely garbage time. Dallas did go on an 11-2 run to close the game to make the final margin not indicative of how lopsided this game was. Golden State won 117-100. Dallas' problems against Golden State continues. Dallas is 1-6 against the Warriors over the last 2 seasons, including losing both games this season (with one more game vs Golden State to go on the 2nd to last game of the season (in Oakland)). In a game where Dallas struggled with their offense, their defense was abysmal - and that coming the day after one of their best defensive performances of the season. 117 points is the most points an opponent has scored on Dallas this season and the Warriors' 57.1% FG was the best a team has shot this season against Dallas. Add to that Dallas giving up the ball a season high 23 times and it's easy to see why the game was such a blowout. For the game, Golden State shot 57.1% (44-77) FG including 8-21 3-pointers and Dallas shot 42.3% (33-78) FG including 7-20 3-pointers. Golden State shot 21-30 FT and Dallas shot 27-35 FT. The only place Dallas had an edge was in rebounds - but with the Warriors' hot shooting they didn't need 2nd chances. Dallas out-rebounded Golden State 50-28 including 20-5 offensive. Golden State had 31 assists and 15 turnovers and Dallas had 21 assists and 23 turnovers. Dallas' winning streak ended at 17 games and this was the first loss of the season on the 2nd night of a back-to-back (1-11). It is just the 10th loss of the season for the team, though. [And maybe we can now stop all the ridiculous "70 win" talk (those magic words should not be used until there is only 10 games left in a season with a team still having a shot at it - with 23 games left (when the talk started), there were just far too many games left).] It was a balanced attack for Golden State with no one player dominating. The Warriors had 6 players in double-digits. Mickael Pietrus was the high man with 20 points to go with 6 rebounds. Jason Richardson had 16 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals. Andres Biedrins was a perfect 8-8 FG for 16 points. He also had 7 assists. Al Harrington was also perfect from the field (but missed 2 free throws) with 16 points including 5-5 FG and 2-2 3-pointers. Stephen Jackson had 16 points and 7 assists. Matt Barnes had 11 points. Baron Davis was fairly quiet with 9 points including 4-10 FG. He also had 4 rebounds and 7 assists, but turned the ball over 4 times. Monta Ellis had 8 points, 5 assists, and 5 turnovers. The Mavs did have 5 players in double-digits scoring, but the most a player had was just 16 points. Jason Terry had 16 points and 4 assists. Devin Harris also had 16 points. He was one of the few Mavs to actually have a good showing in playing with energy and taking some charges. Harris also had 5 assists. Dirk Nowitzki struggled mightily in the game with a number of sloppy turnovers and never found his rhythm as the Warriors' swarmed at him when he had the ball. Nowitzki had just 13 points including 3-11 FG. He had 9 rebounds and 4 assists, but also had 7 turnovers. Josh Howard also struggled with just 11 points on 5-15 FG. He only had 3 rebounds. The Mavs' centers were a non-factor in this game (part of that being matchup issues as Don Nelson went with small-ball). Erick Dampier had 4 points and 6 rebounds in 18 minutes and DeSagana Diop had 4 points and 5 rebounds in 13 minutes. Austin Croshere joined Harris in being one of the few Mavs with a decent outing. Croshere had 5 points (though he shot 1-5 FG) and a team high 13 rebounds including 5 offensive. Jerry Stackhouse had 9 points and 4 rebounds. Greg Buckner started and had 11 points. Pops Mensah-Bonsu got some minutes in non-garbage time as Avery Johnson was struggling to find something that would spark the team. He hit his only shot (and missed 2 free throws) and had 3 rebounds in 15 minutes, but did turn the ball over 4 times. J.J. Barea played 10 minutes in the 4th quarter and had 9 points. Devean George only played 2 minutes due to his knee bothering him and affecting his play. Quotes Don Nelson: "Well after an emotional win like they had in Los Angeles there is usually a letdown. I guess it was just time, 17 was enough. I felt we had a good game plan and executed well the first 3 quarters. We had to come in here angry after getting our butts kicked in Portland and I felt they did that." Nelson: "It was a combination of everything. It was just time. 17 is enough. We just happened to be the lucky guys." Baron Davis: "It was a great win. We're coming together. We knew how important this one was after we let one slip away last night. But this is the NBA and you have up and down games. But we were able to come out and play at a very high level and I'm proud of all my teammates for the way that they played. We had a great team game." Davis: "This is a huge win for us. They're coming in [with] a streak of 17 games in a row and they were looking invincible. The fact that we came out and played at a high level really, really gave us a lot of confidence. We'll definitely be in the playoffs if we continue to play like this." Davis: "My game has changed due to the injury. I'm not as explosive as I was before. I'm still as aggressive, but at times I'm picking my spots. We have more playmakers out there now. JRich [Richardson] is making plays and that ball is starting to get contagious - and we had 31 assists tonight. It was great. We haven't even started to gel yet. We're just playing off the fact that we love being on the court with each other and we're just trying to do everything we can possible to get victories. But we haven't even gelled yet." Stephen Jackson: "We came out tonight real focused. We had an upset loss last night and we wanted to make up for it. Dallas is definitely a great team, the best team in the league, but we wanted this game more than they did tonight and we're thankful we were able to get that tonight." Jackson: "It's always important to get off to a good start against a team like that. You don't want to get down and have to play catch up basketball. But we got up early and the fans were into it - the arena was loud - and we didn't let up. So I'm just glad we were able to get this win." Monta Ellis: "It was a big game for us, bouncing back from last night. We didn't play well last night and we needed to get this one. It was very important that we came out and played hard. We started the game off great, started the 3rd quarter off great, and we won the ballgame." Avery Johnson: "We just weren't here tonight. Take your hats off to the Warriors. They were really into the game. They were energetic and they forced turnovers. We couldn't convert on offensive rebounds. We just didn't have it tonight. It's just one of those rare nights that we didn't have it. We got out-played, out-hustled, out-concentrated, and our guys are really professional - they don't have many nights like this. We will bounce back. We just didn't have it tonight." Johnson: "This leaves a bad taste in our mouth. We don't like to play like this." Johnson: "We don't like to lose. It doesn't sit well with us. We came out on the road and split - it wasn't perfect. Our men are not satisfied with their performance in any category." Dirk Nowitzki: "They came out swinging and we were never ready for the attack. We were backpedaling all game long. We were just never really ready to play. That's something we've got to learn from if we want to do anything this year in the postseason." Jason Terry: "The more aggressive team won the game tonight. They were more aggressive than we were, on both ends of the floor. 17 straight [wins] is not what we are shooting for - we are shooting to be an aggressive team on both ends of the floor. Tonight was just a minor bump in the road. We get back against a good Phoenix team at home Wednesday. Give them credit, they out-played us on both ends of the floor tonight." Austin Croshere: "They came out and played hard from the beginning. When we matched their intensity, we were kind of back and forth on the lead. They went on a big run in the 2nd and then again in the 3rd. And they really sustained their energy for the whole game. I don't really think we are concerned with things in the big picture, but we did a lot of things poorly tonight. We need to reboot, watch some film on the things we did poorly, and continue to improve as a team - which has been our goal the entire streak. We really have to give them credit tonight."
