Jerry Stackhouse did not travel with the team for the 2-game road trip as he received electric shock treatment for the plantar fasciitis of his foot and post-treatment required that he keep off his foot. Josh Howard remains listed as day-to-day with his sore left ankle - but also did not play on the road trip, making it 5 straight games that he has missed due to the injury. Dallas at LA Lakers (November 28) The Mavs were again without Josh Howard and facing the best team the league. The Lakers entered the game with a record of 12-1. It was a new starting lineup for Dallas as Antoine Wright and Gerald Green started. Dallas jumped out to an early 7-2 lead with 9:55 left, but the Lakers then went on an 18-3 run to take a 20-10 lead with 5:15 remaining as Dallas shot just 1-7 FG and had 2 turnovers during the run. The Mavs re-found their shooting touch and scored the next 9 points, capped by a 3-pointer by Devean George, to pull within 19-20 with 3:10 left as the Lakers missed 5 straight shots. Pau Gasol had a layup near the quarter's end to give the Lakers a 30-27 lead after 1. Kobe Bryant had 10 points. Andrew Bynum hit a jumper to open the 2nd quarter, but Dallas then went on a 10-2 run (with all 10 points from Jason Terry and Brandon Bass) to take a 37-34 lead with 7:50 to go. The Lakers did not have a run in them this quarter and Dallas held a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter. Bass converted a 3-point play and J.J. Barea drove for 2 to give Dallas a 46-40 lead with 5:35 remaining. Consecutive jumpers by Derek Fisher pulled the Lakers within 51-52 with 2 minutes left, but Dallas scored the last 5 points of the quarter. Dallas led 57-51 at the half. Dallas shot 58.5% FG while the Lakers shot just 36.5% FG, but the Lakers shot 9-10 FT and Dallas shot just 3-3 FT. After a strong performance in the 2nd quarter, Barea started the 3rd quarter (along with Jason Kidd, for a small guard lineup). Bryant hit a jumper to open the 3rd quarter, but Dallas then scored the next 7 points to take a 64-53 lead with 9:50 to go. A 3-point play by Dirk Nowitzki gave Dallas their largest lead at 69-75 with 7:50 left. Dallas led 78-67 with 3:45 remaining and the Lakers scored the last 13 points of the quarter as Dallas missed 6 straight shots. The Lakers led 80-78 after 3. Nowitzki had 12 points in the 3rd quarter. Dallas' struggles continued into the 4th quarter as the Lakers opened the quarter with an 8-2 run (with 2 free throws by Bass ending a 5:40 minute Dallas scoring drought). A 3-pointer by Jason Terry ended a 6:38 Dallas field goal drought and cut the Lakers' lead down to 88-83 with 9:10 to go. Trevor Ariza hit a jumper and 3-pointer to give the Lakers a 103-93 lead with 5:15 left. 3 straight free throws by Bryant (one from Rick Carlisle's first tech of the season (complaining about a non-call for Nowitzki)) gave the Lakers a 106-95 lead, but Dallas went on an 8-2 run, capped by 2 3-pointers by Terry, to pull within 103-108 with 1:35 remaining. But Dallas couldn't get a stop and the teams traded buckets and Bryant had a layup to give the Lakers a 112-105 lead with 35 seconds to go. After a timeout, Terry finally missed (having connected on 3 straight shots) and that was game, with each team scoring 2 more meaningless points at the end of the game. The Lakers won 114-107. It was almost a mirror image from the first Dallas-Lakers game with Dallas again having a large lapse at the end of the 3rd quarter and caring over into the 4th quarter as the Lakers asserted their will. It was a 21-2 run over a 6 minute span between the 2 quarters. Momentum had clearly swung and Dallas was never able to get it back. Jason Terry did give Dallas a small chance at the end of the game with a couple of 3-pointers, but Dallas simply couldn't get a defensive stop. Dallas lost despite shooting over 50% FG. Dallas shot 51.2% (43-84) FG including 13-29 3-pointers and the Lakers shot 49% (47-96) FG including 6-20 3-pointers. The Lakers shot 14-15 FT and Dallas shot 8-9 FT. The Lakers were called for just 8 fouls, setting both a Laker team record and Dallas opponent record. [Not complaining about the fouls as Dallas was called for just 16 fouls and it was a nationally televised game, which normally means fewer fouls will be call. The refs did let a lot of physical play go, but it didn't seem lopsided.] Dallas was again out-rebounded as the Lakers had 45 rebounds to Dallas' 36 rebounds, including 17-8 offensive. Dallas had an impressive 32 assists and the Lakers had 23 assists. The loss ended Dallas' 5-game winning streak. No surprise that Kobe Bryant led the way. Bryant had 13 points in 4th quarter - and 19 points over the last 16 minutes of the game. He finished with 35 points and also had 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Andrew Bynum had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds including 6 offensive. Derek Fisher had a strong outing with 19 points and some good defense (as well as some bad when he let J.J. Barea get away from him). Pau Gasol had 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Vladimir Radmanovic was the only Laker starter in not double-digits with just 3 points on 1-4 3-pointers (no 2-pointers attempted) and had 3 rebounds in 17 minutes. Trevor Ariza provided the punch off the bench with 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists in 31 minutes. Lamar Odom had just 2 points on 1-6 FG and 9 rebounds in 20 minutes. Jordan Farmar had 4 points on 2-6 FG and 4 assists in 17 minutes. Sasha Vujacic had 4 points in 8 minutes. Jason Terry was the high man for Dallas with 29 points. He also had 5 assists. The Lakers consistently double-teamed Dirk Nowitzki and he would usually pass the ball when the double came. He had a double-double with 19 points (7-15 FG) and 12 rebounds and also had 4 assists and 3 steals. Jason Kidd again flirted with a triple-double with 12 points (all 4 field goals made were 3-pointers), 8 rebounds, and 11 assists - and had just 1 turnover. Antoine Wright had 14 points, but was limited some by foul trouble (defending Bryant was his job). Gerald Green started, but only played 5 minutes and hit both his shots. Erick Dampier didn't do much in the game in not attempting a shot and having just 3 rebounds and 1 block in 24 minutes. J.J. Barea had a very nice outing and constantly tore up the Lakers' defense by driving to the basket [didn't they read the scouting report - Barea will drive for layups]. He hit his first 4 shots (all layups), but shot just 1-7 FG the rest of the way as the refs let Fisher be overly physical on Barea. Barea had 10 points and 9 assists in 21 minutes. Brandon Bass had 11 points and 3 rebounds in 20 minutes and Devean George had 6 points in 20 minutes against his former team - he wasn't happy with the lack of help he got while defending Bryant (but Bryant also hit some tough shots and George's defense wasn't all that great). DeSagana Diop hit his only shot and had 4 rebounds and 2 blocks in 16 minutes. Quotes Phil Jackson: "I thought we started really well the 1st quarter. We allowed some things to happen to us in the 1st quarter that changed the context of the game. We had a run that broke the game open and a good start to the 4th quarter and kept the pressure on the other team. Until that moment, we were really on our heals most of the time. Then we got a few run-outs, a few opportunities, and a couple steals." Jackson on Dallas: "I think they played a well throughout the game. They attacked us in territory we had some problems with in the 1st half. We couldn't stop penetration, they got easy shots and did well at the 3-point line, in addition to shooting a high percentage. There was some really good shooting tonight by the Mavericks. They played a good ball game, but we were better tonight." Jackson on Dallas' guards: "[We] couldn't stop penetration. They got easy shots and good looks." Jackson on Ariza: "I should start with the fact that tonight he made a lot of tough shots. He was able to keep the ball in the lane and make the tough shots after he got the ball in a spot where he could convert. He had a number of open shots too that were important for us to have at that point in the game." Kobe Bryant: "We're a pretty smart team. So if something is not going our way in the 1st half, we all come in here and not just talk about playing harder, but we also talk about the execution of it. That's the way Phil has raised us to play and think." Bryant on adjustments in the game: "It was the defensive adjustments in terms of keeping them out the middle with their play-making, and we did good job of that. On top of that, we stepped up our intensity because they were playing with a sense of desperation that we weren't." Derek Fisher on what won the game: "It was on the defensive end. It felt like we were giving up too many points in the 1st half. So we wanted to really calm down on the defense end and we did a better job - not a great job, but enough to win the game." Lamar Odom on his rebounding: "I tried to do something. I was missing chippies, so I had to contribute in some way. Offensively, it wasn't a good night." Trevor Ariza on the bench play: "We brought some energy to the game. We knew that they were playing reckless like they had nothing to lose, so we told ourselves we had to play the same way." Ariza: "I just came in and played the way I know how to play and I played hard with a lot of energy and hit the open shots." Ariza: "We never quit, we never gave up. They got the best of us in the 1st half, but in the 2nd half we brought a lot of energy and we were fortunate enough to get the win." Rick Carlisle: "We had an opportunity and let it slip away. Give the Lakers credit. They did what they had to do to take the game away. That 6- or 7-minute late in the 3rd and early in the 4th [run] was our undoing. And Kobe made some very difficult shots down the stretch." Carlisle: "Our undoing was the 2nd half of the 3rd quarter - when they made a run and we just didn't have any answers. We hung in and gave ourselves a chance, but Kobe made some very difficult shots down the stretch. I thought Ariza was probably the major difference in the game. I think what he did defensively and offensively were difference makers." Carlisle: "When you're the Dallas Mavericks, you're not interested in moral victories. We're interested in winning games. We had an opportunity and let it slip away. Give the Lakers credit. They did what they had to do to take the game away. We're very disappointed, now we need to regroup for tomorrow night." Carlisle: "There is a huge rebound differential and if you look at the free throw line there is a big differential there. The Lakers are one of those team that statistically when they don't look like they are playing well, they still find ways to beat you." Carlisle on the Lakers being called for just 8 fouls: "I can't remember the last time I saw an NBA team commit only 8 fouls for 48 minutes. Maybe these guys were that good defensively. It's a little hard to believe. I'm not going to complain about the officiating, but I thought we played an aggressive game and we could have gone to the line a few more times." Carlisle: "Our bench did good things, but we expect them to play well. That is their job and we need that every night. Barea did some really good things for us from a play-making stand point. We had some other guys play well in stretches." Dirk Nowitzki: "We knew they were going to make a run in their own building. They picked up the energy. On defense, they put Ariza in there and Kobe in there at 2 and 3. They are so long, for a while there we didn't get any good shots. That's when they made their run. We still had our chances there. We played well for 3 quarters and then just weren't good enough in the 4th. We let Kobe beat us in 1-on-1, which is tough. He's the best player in the world. They just picked us apart at the end and in the 2nd half." Nowitzki: "We need Josh Howard back. It's not rocket science. He's developed into a great scorer for us. We need him back healthy, slicing, and scoring." Jason Kidd: "We're disappointed, but we've got to learn from that. The big thing is to understand what it takes to be one of the best in this league. They made a run on us twice and won both games, so we've got to learn from that." Kidd: "We were there the whole game. It wasn't just 3 quarters. We were right there and we let this one get away." Jason Terry on the Lakers' run: "We were in a situation where we were having turnovers, didn't score, and they came down and had the momentum. Once you play against a team like that and they get the momentum the way they did, it's hard to get it back. We hung in there, we fought. The big thing about this is we're back at it tomorrow night, so we have to shake this off quick." Terry on the run: "We were strung out a couple times and their bigs kind of flashed to the basket on us, but Trevor Ariza hit some big tough shots. It is what it is. Kobe is going to make his tough shots." Terry: "They made a great run on us tonight. That's why they are who they are. They're the team that everyone is gunning for. We'll get there eventually, we're just not there yet." Josh Howard again did not play (while Kevin Martin remained out for the Kings). Dallas scored the first 4 points of the game, but the Kings then scored the next 10 points to take a 10-4 lead with 8:45 to go. But 3-pointers surrounded a King layup to kick off a 16-4 Dallas run as the Mavs took a 20-14 lead with 4:45 remaining. Jason Terry hit a 3-pointer at the quarter buzzer to give Dallas a 29-20 lead after 1. Bobby Brown scored the first 2 points of the 2nd quarter, but Dallas then scored the next 8 points to take a 37-22 lead with 8:10 left as the Kings turned the ball over 3 times and missed 2 shots (and would also miss their next 4 shots and have another turnover, but did hit 2 free throws). Dallas led 39-24 with 6 minutes remaining and a layup by Bobby Jackson ended Sacramento's 5:20 field goal drought and kicked off 12 consecutive Sacramento points to pull the Kings within 36-39 with 1:45 to go as Dallas missed 8 straight shots. But Dallas closed the quarter with a 7-2 run to take a 46-38 lead at the half. Antoine Wright suffered a strained left groin late in the 2nd quarter and did not return. Dallas shot 39% FG (but hit 4 3-pointers) and Sacramento shot 33% FG in the half. Bench players Terry and Devean George started to open the 3rd quarter. George hit a 3-pointer and Terry hit 2 free throws to give Dallas a 57-43 lead with 8:05 left. Francisco Garcia connected on consecutive layups (with a Dallas free throw in between) to pull Sacramento within 51-60 with 4:55 remaining, but that was as close as the Kings would get the rest of the game as Dallas then went on a 7-2 mini-run, capped by a 3-point play by George, to take a 67-53 lead with 3:15 to go. Dallas scored the last 5 points of the quarter, with Terry again hitting a shot at the quarter buzzer, to go up 76-57 after 3. Dallas out-scored Sacramento 30-19 in the 3rd quarter. Terry scored the first 4 points of the 4th quarter and the blowout was on. A 3-pointer by George gave Dallas their largest lead at 91-64 with 7:50 left. Sacramento pulled within 19 points twice (the first time with 2:45 left), but could get no closer. Dallas won 101-78. It was a nice easy win for Dallas against a poor team (made poorer by the continued absence of Kevin Martin). With the blowout, no Mavs player played more than 32 minutes (extra valuable on the 2nd night of a back-to-back). Dallas shot 43.4% (36-83) FG including 7-17 3-pointers. Sacramento shot 34.8% (32-92) FG including a dismal 0-15 3-pointers (tied the league record for 2nd most attempts without a make (Washington once went 0-16)). Dallas shot 22-26 FT and Sacramento shot 14-16 FT. After going 10 consecutive games in out-rebounding their opponent, Dallas has now gone 3 straight games in being out-rebounded. Sacramento out-rebounded Dallas 53-46 including 19-12 offensive. Dallas had 12 turnovers off of which Sacramento scored 6 points. Sacramento had 17 turnovers off of which Dallas scored 18 points. It was the 6th straight loss for the Kings. Dallas got a great performance from their bench as the bench had 62 points (of course, that means the starters weren't that great scoring - only one was in double-digits scoring). Jason Terry was again the high man with 24 points. Dirk Nowitzki had 19 points and 8 rebounds. Erick Dampier had a nice outing with 8 points including 3-4 FG, 13 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Jason Kidd had 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists (and, again with an impressive assist-to-turnover ratio with just 1 turnover). Gerald Green started, but only shot 1-8 FG and played just 13 minutes. Antoine Wright also started (same starting lineup as for the Lakers' game) and miss 4 shots and hit 2 free throws and had 1 foul for his only stats before being injured late in the 2nd quarter (played 14 minutes). Devean George had a nice outing with 13 points including 2-3 3-pointers. J.J. Barea had 5 points and 5 assists in 25 minutes. Brandon Bass had 10 points and 7 rebounds. James Singleton had 6 points and 2 rebounds in 10 minutes. Shawne Williams had 4 points and 5 rebounds in 5 minutes and DeSagana Diop had no stats in 3 1/2 minutes - both played purely in garbage time [yes, Diop didn't play during primetime as a coach's decision, as no one ever knows what Rick Carlisle's rotation is going to be]. Sacramento only had 2 players in double-digits scoring - and that at just 13 and 10 points. Beno Udrih had Kidd-like numbers with 13 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists. Leading scorer John Salmons had 10 points and 5 rebounds and did not play in the 4th quarter with an injured thigh (and the game being a blowout). Rookie Donte Green started and had 9 points including 3-12 FG and 6 rebounds. Mikki Moore had 8 points and 7 rebounds. Brad Miller had 6 points including 1-5 FG, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. Bobby Brown had 8 points. Spencer Hawes had 7 points including 3-10 FG and 7 rebounds. Playing in just his 2nd game of the season (injured), Francisco Garcia had 6 points including 2-9 FG in 18 minutes. Hot-and-cold Bobby Jackson was cold and had just 6 points on 3-10 FG and 4 rebounds in 20 minutes. Rookie Jason Thompson had 3 points including 1-4 FG and 4 rebounds and Quincy Douby had 2 points including 1-3 FG. Quotes Rick Carlisle: "We had a lot of guys play well. But the guy I thought played the best game for us was Devean George. He really gave us a presence defensively out on the floor. He really played within himself and knocked down some shots tonight and his ability to cut hard and get to the bucket. It was something that gave our team a lot of consistency on the defensive end. Just a solid game for us. Terry, Dirk, and Kidd played great again as well." Carlisle on Sacramento out-rebounding Dallas: "They are an active team. They were able to run down their misses. Some of that was because of the switching we were doing. We were trying to do some things against their pick-and-roll. Sometimes that happens when there are mismatches on the boards. They got some 2nd chance points from it, but I was not disappointed with the effort at all." Carlisle on Nowitzki diving for a loose ball: "I used to see Larry Bird do that for years. It was the defining play of the game. It was an effort play by Dirk, a huge momentum play." Carlisle on the bench: "Those guys are getting a feel of the rotation and what is expected of them. We are going to need our guys ready to play. If you look around the league, the teams that are successful are those with benches that can give you 30- to 40-points a night. I don't know if they will do that every night, but our depth needs to be our calling card." Jason Kidd: "Our confidence, being a veteran ball club, in the game late on the road is good. Keeping it from getting out of hand in the 4th quarter, that's the biggest thing being on the road." Kidd: "The West is very tough. We got off to a slow start. Now we are at .500, we have a 2 week home stand coming up and, we need to play well and get nice win streak going before we go on the road." Jason Terry: "I know what the team expects. I need to score and be a factor. Coming off the bench doesn't bother me at all." Devean George: "I was just trying to get in the rhythm of the game and contribute. I want to come in and bring energy - that's my role." Reggie Theus: "Well, obviously it was a pretty tough night. We just shot the ball so poorly. I thought the guys were working hard, but they weren't getting rewarded with any help in making a couple baskets. It's tough when you shoot 35% from the field and you're 0-15 from the 3-point line. They battled hard - 19 offensive rebounds, 22 2nd chance points. Thinking about the game, I thought defensively we did some good things, but just couldn't put the ball in the hole." Theus on shooting 0-15 3-pointers: "We just haven't statistically been a very good 3-point shooting team. We make 5 or 6 of those, and it changes the game." Theus on playing younger players: "As much as I want to win every single game, we've got to continue to think about our future and make sure these guys are getting as many minutes as possible. When I put those guys in, you're not necessarily throwing in the towel - I'm looking for some energy, I'm looking for somebody to come up with some shots. I hadn't played Quincy [Douby] in a while and I put him in the game thinking maybe he can come in and knock down some shots too. So that's what I was looking for when that happened. As it turned out it's still valuable minutes for the growth of the franchise." John Salmons: "We definitely need to win, period - but we definitely need a home win. Somehow we need to pull it together. We need to come out and play hard for 48 minutes." Salmons on his injured left thigh: "I can't really pin point it, but it was early in the 3rd quarter. I can't really remember what happened though. Throughout the 3rd quarter, it just kept getting worse and worse. When I came out of the game, I spoke to the trainer and decided to shut it down." Francisco Garcia on his health: "It feels good. I'm still trying to get into shape and have some practices. It feels good to be out there with my teammates. I'm feeling good out there and trying to get in and, coming off the bench, just trying to do what I do." Garcia on returning to action: "I just got a little insecure. This is my 2nd time out there without practicing, so I'm trying to get my confidence back. You don't know what you can really do. You don't know if you can go to the hole, how far you can go on defense. It's a little hard, but I'll get used to it." Garcia on lossing 6 straight games: "It is a long season and we need to give it some time. This was a tough 2 games for us. We have to go and regroup tomorrow to see what we did wrong and just keep moving forward. We are going to have Kevin [Martin] back soon and have everyone healthy."
