Game 3: Denver at Dallas (May 9) Dallas scored the first 6 points of the game as Denver missed their first 4 shots. Carmelo Anthony got Denver on the board with 2 free throws with 9:30 left and the game remained close [the theme of the game, along with the officiating] with Dallas holding a small lead (no more than 6 points most of the quarter). Dallas led 17-11 with 2:40 remaining and Denver went on a 7-1 mini-run to tie the game at 18-18 with 45 seconds to go. Dirk Nowitzki hit a jumper with 20 seconds left, but Anthony was able to putback his own miss as the quarter ended. The game was tied 20-20 after 1 in the foul marred quarter. Nowitzki had 8 points and 6 rebounds and Anthony had 10 points. Josh Howard did play despite his sprained ankles, but his minutes were limited in the quarter as he was one of the many victims of the free blowing whistles. Howard, Antoine Wright, and Kenyon Martin each had 2 fouls and the refs called a high 12 fouls in the quarter that resulted in 15 combined free throws attempted. I guess the many free throws weren't too bad of a thing since neither team could hit a shot - Dallas shot 8-22 FG and Denver shot 6-24 FG. Dallas hurt themselves by giving up too many putback buckets - Denver had 6 offensive rebounds off of which they scored 8 points. The whistles continued to blow in the 2nd quarter [and I was getting really ticked off at the refs - they seemed to think that the fans had paid to see them, not basketball] and Howard, Erick Dampier (2 in the quarter), and Chris Andersen (all 3 in the quarter) all picked up their 3rd fouls less than 4 minutes into the quarter and all sat the rest of the quarter. Nowitzki hit a defensive 3 seconds technical to open the 2nd quarter and a 3-pointer by Jason Terry gave Dallas a 24-20 lead with 11:15 left. But Dallas' lead would get no larger than 5 points in the quarter. Dallas led 33-28 with 7:20 to go and Denver scored the next 9 points, taking their first lead of the game, and led 37-33 with 4:45 remaining - Dallas missed 5 straight shots during the run. But 4 points would be Denver's largest lead in the quarter and Dallas went on a 5-1 mini-run (with lots of missed shots in "run") to tie the game at 38-38 with 2:40 left. But Anthony converted a 3-point play to give Denver back a small lead. Nowitzki drained a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left, but Anthony got a layup with 3 seconds left and Denver led 48-45 at the half. Anthony had 9 points, Chauncey Billups had 9 points, and Nowitzki had 13 points in the 2nd quarter. Denver out-scored Dallas 28-25 in the 2nd quarter in shooting a slightly better 9-21 FG compared to Dallas' 7-19 FG. As I said, the whistles were blowing too freely and there were 16 combined fouls called and 25 free throws attempted in the quarter - that's 28 fouls and 40 free throws for the half. Neither team scored over the first 90 seconds of the 3rd quarter before Howard got a layup to pull Dallas within 1 point, but Denver went on a 10-5 run, capped by a jumper by a hot Billups, to take their largest led at 56-50 with 9:10 remaining. But it was back to a free throw-fest, but this time in Dallas' favor, as the Nuggets got into the penalty a mere 4 minutes into the quarter. A 3-point play by Wright and 2 free throws by Nowitzki pulled Dallas within 57-58 with 7:15 to go and the game stayed close with Denver holding no larger than a 4 point lead. Dahntay Jones fouled Brandon Bass as Bass attempted a dunk with 5:30 left and I again got to yell at the refs as it should have been a flagrant foul (level 1, not ejection) (replays confirmed) - Bass was in the air and Jones gave a one-hand shove to Bass' chest, no play was made on the ball and the shove was dangerous since Bass was airborne, as seen by the hard fall he had - but these clueless officials went with the simple foul call. Back to the game: a layup by Howard, 2 free throws by Nowitzki, and 1-2 free throws by Bass gave Dallas a 68-67 lead with 3:45 to go, but Billups nailed a 3-pointer and Martin hit 2 free throws to give Denver back the lead. But Dallas then went on a 10-3 run [with 6 of Dallas' points from free throws and all 3 of Denvers from the line] to take a 78-75 lead with a minute left. Anthony hit 2 free throws and Martin got a putback [my 3rd ref gripe: clearly offensive interference as the ball unquestionable was still on the rim when Martin grabbed it] with 5 seconds left, but Jason Kidd was able to quickly bring the ball up the court and hit a long jumper as the quarter ended to give Dallas a 80-79 lead after 3. Billups had 16 points on a perfect 5-5 FG, 2-2 3-pointers, and 4-4 FT in the 3rd quarter. Both teams shot 50% FG in the quarter, but it was the whistles that again dominated as there were 24 fouls called in the quarter and Dallas shot 19-21 FT and Denver shot 11-12 FT. For some reason the refs decided to stop the whistlefest after the first few minutes of the 4th quarter (Nene picked up his 5th foul 2 minutes into the quarter and Andersen fouled out a minute later) and we actually got to see some good basketball (plus the teams were actually hitting shots, unlike the 1st half). Denver hit 2 jumpers to open the 4th quarter, but Dallas then scored the next 5 points to take a 85-83 lead with 9:10 left as the game stayed really close in the quarter. The game was either tied or Dallas held a small lead over the next several minutes. A layup by Howard gave Dallas a 98-94 lead with 4:35 left. J.R. Smith nailed a 3-pointer and Kidd found Bass for a power dunk to give Dallas a 100-97 lead with 4 minutes left. The teams traded some misses and turnovers and Terry hit 1-2 FT with 2:15 remaining. Anthony found Martin for a layup to pull Denver within 99-101 with 1:50 to go. Nowitzki missed, but Howard got the rebound and was fouled - but he also just hit 1-2 FT. Billups missed and Nowitzki missed and there was a minute left. Nene drove baseline for the pretty reverse layup to make it a 1 point game with 45 seconds remaining. After a Dallas timeout, Nowitzki found Terry in the corner and he buried the 3-pointer to give Dallas a 105-101 lead with 31 seconds left. After a Denver timeout, Anthony drove quickly (and fairly uncontested) to the basket for the dunk with 29 seconds left - that meant they didn't have to intentionally foul. After a Dallas timeout, the Mavs ran the clock down some and Nowitzki missed a fade away free throw jumper and Billups got the rebound and called timeout with 6.5 seconds left. Denver moved the ball to the front court and inbounded the ball to Anthony, who fumbled the ball then recovered and then moved to the elbow and Wright tried to take the foul to give in reaching across Anthony's arms (but the ref amazingly didn't make the call) and Anthony then nailed a 3-pointer with 1 second left to give Denver a 1 point lead. After a Dallas timeout, the Mavs struggled to inbound the ball (near 5 second violation) and finally got the ball to Nowitzki and his prayer 3-point fling was well short. Denver won 106-105. Denver leads the series 3-0. You hate to see a game like this, especially in the playoffs. The game should be dominate by the players, not the refs. But in this game the refs dominated the game, even if you take out that last bad non-call. There were 61 fouls called in the game and 89 free throws attempted. Just ridiculous. And as much as all the whistles were bothering me [I yelled, 'Stop blowing those whistles!' at one point during the game - and that was on a foul on Denver], it was 3 non-calls/mis-calls that bothered me the most. You have Dahntay Jones making a shove to the chest on an airborne Brandon Bass - the ball was high above Bass' head - yet no flagrant foul was called. You have an offensive interference not called near the end of the 3rd quarter where Kenyon Martin clearly took the ball off the rim to dunk it - that's 2 points for Denver in what was a 1 point game. And then you have the end where Antoine Wright rakes Carmelo Anthony across the arms right in front of Mark Wunderlich with Dallas having a foul to give with no call made - after all those whistles, they didn't blow it when Dallas was actually trying to take a foul. It wasn't the game ender as Denver would have had the ball with 3 seconds left and the ball out of bounds, but no timeout to take to set up a plan. So, here's to you Mark Wunderlich, Bennett Salvatore, and Ken Mauer - you wanted recognition, you got it. After the game, the NBA released a statement admitting that the refs made a mistake in not calling the intentional foul. But the admission of the mistake (which is not a challengeable error) has no effect on the outcome of the game and is little solace to the Mavs. League statement: "At the end of the Dallas-Denver game this evening, the officials missed an intentional foul committed by Antoine Wright on Carmelo Anthony, just prior to Anthony's 3-point basket." As I said, the whistles and ending marred what could have been a great basketball game. The largest lead by either team the entire game was just 6 points and the largest lead in the 4th quarter was just 4 points. But give Denver credit, they played well down the stretch in shooting 4-6 FG over the last 3:30 of the game including the clutch 3 by Carmelo Anthony at the end. And Dallas struggled down the stretch in shooting just 1-7 FG (though the one make was Jason Terry's killer 3) and also missed 2 free throws. For the game, Denver shot 42% (34-81) FG [but 53% in the 2nd half] including 6-15 3-pointers and Dallas shot 40% (30-75) FG [but 44% in the 2nd half] including 5-15 3-pointers. Denver shot 32-40 FT and Dallas shot 40-49 FT. Dallas out-rebounded Denver 46-41 and Denver had a 13-11 offensive edge - Dallas overcame their early problems in giving up boards and 2nd chance points as Denver had 10 offensive rebounds and 13 2nd chance points in the 1st half. Both teams were fairly clean with the ball as Denver had 7 turnovers and Dallas had 10 turnovers. It is now do or die for the Mavs as their next loss is the end of the season - no team has ever overcome an 0-3 series deficit. Unlike the first 2 games, it was mainly a 2-man attack for Denver. Carmelo Anthony was solid throughout the game with 31 points, though he did struggle with his shot some as he shot just 9-24 FG and also hit 11-14 FT. Chauncey Billups was white hot in the 3rd quarter where he scored 16 of his 32 points. He shot 9-16 FG and 11-12 FT and had 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Kenyon Martin overcame early foul trouble and had 12 points including 5-6 FG and 4 rebounds in 38 minutes. Nene had his first poor outing of the series with just 5 points including 2-10 FG. He also had 8 rebounds in his 30 minutes. Dahntay Jones again started and again played few minutes. He had 8 points including 3-4 FG in 14 minutes. J.R. Smith had 10 points including 3-10 FG and 6 rebounds off the bench. Chris Andersen was extremely limited by foul trouble and had 5 points and 6 rebounds before fouling out in 11 minutes. Anthony Carter had 3 points including 1-6 FG, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists in 18 minutes. Linas Kleiza missed his only shot and had 3 rebounds in 14 minutes. Dirk Nowitzki had a double-double with 33 points including 13-15 FT and 16 rebounds. He only shot 1-6 FG in the 4th quarter, but did have a key assist to Jason Terry for a 3-pointer. Terry had 17 points and 4 rebounds in 33 minutes. Josh Howard played despite his sprained ankle, but his 1st half was limited due to foul trouble. He finished with 14 points including 5-15 FG and 7 rebounds in 29 minutes. Jason Kidd had 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Antoine Wright also had foul trouble and had 8 points and 5 fouls in 20 minutes. Some people incorrectly criticized Wright for the way he took the intentional foul at the end, but if he fouled Anthony harder he could have been called for a flagrant foul or if he tried to wrapped Anthony up Anthony could have attempted a shot and been sent to the line - it was a fine line between taking the foul the proper way and then taking a foul that resulted in free throws. Erick Dampier was also plagued by fouls and had just 2 points and 3 rebounds in 17 minutes. Brandon Bass took advantage of extra minutes and played well. Bass had 16 points including 12-14 FT and 5 rebounds. Ryan Hollins had 2 points and 4 rebounds in 12 minutes and J.J. Barea missed both his shots and had 1 rebound and 1 assist in 12 minutes. Due to the 1st half foul trouble by a number of players, Gerald Green got in for 9 minutes. He didn't play well, though, and missed 4 shots and had no rebounds. James Singleton's only stats in 4 minutes were a rebound, a block, and 3 fouls. Quotes George Karl on the last play: "We just thought Melo had a great matchup. We just zippered him up and put Chauncey in the corner. It seemed like he [Anthony] fumbled the ball and he made it pretty clear that he was going to fire. It was a great shot. And he's made a lot of them in my time with him. You know, when we're down 4 with, whatever, 34 seconds to go, I thought the quick shot Melo got on the dunk was an even better executed play than the last one - the last one was skill and talent." Karl: "We weren't very good. I'll be honest with you, I don't think we've played our best basketball in this series. We've played winning basketball, but I don't think we've played polished basketball. To win this game shooting 33% after the 1st half I think was a touch of our character and our seriousness, and that's what it comes down to. I think the film will show that we just kept competing, we kept staying in the game, kept overcoming, kept figuring it out. And Melo bails us out with a great shot." Karl: "We had a couple of guys that didn't have the nights, we didn't have as much balance as we normally have. You know, Nene and J.R. and our bench was kind of in foul trouble or disoriented a little bit. It was very clear I think from probably the 2nd quarter on that we're going to go Chauncey and Melo most of the night. It's not our favorite way to do it, but it's still a pretty good way to do it." Karl near the end of the game: "I thought Anthony Carter was going to commit suicide when he came off and doubled him [Nowitzki] on the one and Jason [Terry] made the 3." Carmelo Anthony on the game winner: "I think that's #1. I've hit a lot of big shots throughout in my short career, but I've never in a big shot in a playoffs like this, in a situation like this. There's was a thin line between 2-1 and 3-0 and that shot was a deciding factor in that." Anthony: "The only thing I that went through my mind was how much the clock was running down. Once I lost the ball, the designed play went out the window and it was just go and make a play." Anthony on if Wright fouled him: "I don't know, man, I don't know. I can't really harp on that too much. My main thing was just to go and make a play." Anthony on the 2nd half: "I think as a team we showed great character tonight. The game went so many different ways tonight. It got physical in there. We missed a lot of shots, a lot of layups that we normally make. We thought some calls should have went our way tonight, but it didn't - we kind of prepared ourselves for that. But I think as a team we overcame a lot tonight, character-wise." Anthony on his dunk with 30 seconds left: "Yeah, a lot of people was talking about the 3-point shot I made, but I think in my eyes that dunk that I had was the biggest shot of the game, the key play of the game. For me to get it with 30-some seconds left on the clock and only use 3 seconds on the clock, I think that was the key play of the game." Anthony on if Nowitzki was distracted by his off the court problems: "Dirk had 33 [points] and 16 [rebounds] - if he was distracted, I don't know what to say about that. I thought he played a great game. He made shots, he drove to the hole, he even tried to dunk one time and the crowd went crazy out there. I thought he played a solid game tonight. 33 and 16, I'll take that any night." Chauncey Billups on the game winner: "It was a play that was to get Melo up top with the ball and have me in the right corner. Melo had the whole side to operate, think that they wasn't going to leave me in the corner. I don't know how he fumbled the ball early in the play, but he got the ball back. And I know they were really aggressive trying to foul, with a foul to give, and the ref I guess didn't see it and Melo was able to step into a shot and it was one of the best shots I've ever seen." Billups: "The game was a little choppy with all the foul trouble and our guys in and out of the lineup and I just wanted to be aggressive, man. I just wanted to come out and be aggressive. I think I might of shot 1 or 2 shots in the 1st quarter, I didn't score at all. I knew that for us to have a chance of winning the game, I had to have an affect on the game scoring wise. I just wanted to be aggressive and kind of got going a little bit, helped the team out." Billups: "Any time I can get to the free throw line - I see a team in the bonus and I can attack and get to the free throw line and get easy ones - it helps my team out, helps me out. And it's just one of the best ways I've learned how to score was through the free throw line. So you get 9, 10 of those and then you make a few shots, and you look up and it's 25, 20-something [points]. That's just something I've learned over the years." Billups on the 4th quarter: "This, really, today is what playoff basketball is all about, you know. So many different emotional swings in the game, in the 4th quarter. It coming down to the last minute and a half, 2 minutes, you know, 30 seconds. That's what playoff basketball is all about. We've been fortunate enough to win most of our games by 10-plus points, which we would prefer. But this is really what it's all about is playing games like this and winning ugly games like this. I think our team really learned a lot and grew up today." Anthony Carter: "It says a lot about us. "At home, we can get blowouts, but on the road we just want to stay in the game and execute down the stretch. Just by being on the road, that says a lot. We can keep our composure and just keep on playing through the game without losing control." Chris Andersen: "They threw everything at us that they could. We definitely tried to stay calm and collected. When things weren't going our way, everybody stayed positive. Everybody just kept their composure, kept battling and fighting through it." Rick Carlisle: "I really loved the way our guys competed tonight. Just fought tooth and nail the whole 48 minutes. And, you know, it's tough cause Denver's real physical. We just battled them toe-to-toe and just put ourselves in a position to win the game. And unfortunately in a game where there is 61 fouls called an official decides not to call a foul when we're trying to take a foul. And it's just a shame cause Mark's [Wunderlich] a good official, an experience official. I assume that they know that we have a foul to give and that we would take it in that situation and I'm yelling to Antoine, 'Get him, get him, take it!' And no whistle blows. And so it's just extremely disappointing. I'm almost as disappointed for Mark as I am for us, cause that's a call he makes a 100% of the time. And listen, there's not guarantee - we still would have been up 2 with probably 3 seconds left, but it's a lot more difficult situation for Denver. So, what do you tell your fans, what do you tell your players? You know it's going to come down to a game of inches and it's going be this much either way. That's unfortunately where it's at." Carlisle: "The rules are all written. And basically they state that if there is a foul, it's called, whether it's in the 1st quarter or the 4th quarter. Whether it's the beginning of the game or crunch time. You know, officiating has got to be a science and not an art. Things count the same in the 1st and 4th quarters. Look, if I sit here and belabor this, it's not going to be good for our league and ultimately it's not going to be good for our team either. But it's one of those times where it's really an unfortunate thing." Carlisle: "You got to be aggressive at both ends. We were able to get into the bonus earlier in quarters, which was big. So again, from a game plan stand point, we were able to do what we would have liked have done. We got some guys going. We had horrible foul trouble in the 1st half - Josh and Antoine and Damp all had 3 fouls. So, you know, we had some make-shift lineups in there just trying to get through it - I thought we weathered it well, only being down 3 at halftime. Our 3rd quarter was great. It just comes down to the end. It's extremely disappointing because we've got fans that expect the best - they expect their team to play great, they expect the officiating to be great. And just, I don't know. I'm just kind of shocked, that's all." Carlisle on the end: "Yeah, we have a foul to give. Take the foul, take the foul. But not in the act of shooting. So when Carmelo bobbles the ball and starts dribbling, I'm yelling at Antoine, 'Take it, take it!' He slashes across his arm and body and, you know, the whistle didn't blow. [pause] Antoine was so sure he fouled, he stops." Carlisle: "The foul was committed, it was not called but it should have been called. Look, let's get off of this. Let's get on to something else." Carlisle on being down 3-0: "I understand all the stats on that. But we're going to keep battling these guys. We're going to be there Monday. Look, I mean, with a game like this, you know, you just got to come back even harder, that's the way I see it. I thought we really played our hearts out today. Our fans were great. Dirk was tremendous, just sensational. It wasn't a prefect game. The way the game started out, it was 15-10 with 3 left in the 1st. It looked like both teams had been on an extended All-Star break. It was sloppy, it was very physical. Both teams were really clawing defensively, the shooting percentages were low. But it was a really hard played game and I'm sure a great game to watch." Carlisle on Anthony's layup with 30 seconds left: "We didn't want that to happen. It's not as critical as the 3, but it is 2 points and you want to give more resistance, obviously. And look, we wanted to score a little bit the last 3 or 4 possessions too and we struggled to get the ball in the basket. Those are the realities of the game. Carmelo made a great drive, gave them an opportunity to have a difference on the shot clock. But that play had nothing to do with the end." Dirk Nowitzki: "We'll be down tonight after this one. I think this is about as tough of a loss as I've been a part of in my 11 years in the league. So we'll definitely got to sit on this one and just gut it out on Monday." Nowitzki on the game winner: "Well, it happened right in front of me. I thought Antoine wrapped him up pretty good. But, hey, there was no whistle. It is what it is. It's only a foul in this league when the referee blows the whistle. But, like I said, I thought he wrapped him up pretty good, he tried to grab him. But you got to play right through if there is no call. You know, you just got to stay right there. But Melo made some shots down the stretch and made a heck of a play there, just kept the dribble and rose up and made the shot." Nowitzki: "Early in the game, obviously they would have called that a foul. It felt like there were a hundred free throws out there. So I think early in the game there would have been a foul, but there was no whistle." Nowitzki on his end of game: "I took some tough shots. I think the one-leg fade away was a bad shot, the other ones were pretty decent, shots I took basically in the first 3 quarters too. Just didn't make enough. The game winner [attempt] was just a heave with a second to go and it was just a little short." Nowitzki: "I had my shots and we had the game - that's how we feel. We were right there. We were up 4 with 30 seconds to go. And that's a game that we got to have." Nowitzki on why it's one of the worst losses for him: "I don't know, just the way it went down down the stretch. Basically thinking we had it and we're making the right play in we're trying to foul. It was just a weird sequence down the stretch. So this is a tough one, this is a tough one. This definitely ranks right up there. I think we deserved to win, we played well enough to win. Just wasn't meant to be." Jason Kidd: "The game didn't come down to that last play. You've got to make plays down the stretch, and we just didn't do that. The officials didn't make every call that was right, but we had free throw opportunities that we missed and we didn't get a big stop at the end." Kidd: "Nothing was taken from us. You win the game or you lose it. The history of the game says that games are won or lost by the players, and officials tend not to make calls at the end. They didn't make every call tonight, but the game didn't come down to the last - we still have to make plays down the stretch, and we didn't do it." Antoine Wright on his non-called foul: "What do you want me to do - take him out and then I get a flagrant 2 late in the game? I made a play on the ball like I was told in the huddle and the call wasn't made." Wright: "All night long the whistle was blowing fast. At the end of the game when we're blatantly trying to foul, the whistle wasn't blowing. I was positive a whistle was coming, just like everybody else was positive the whistle was coming. What do you want me to do? Do you want me to Derek Fisher him, just take him out, and then I get a flagrant foul late in the game? I can't blatantly run through the guy - I have to make a play on the ball - and that's what I felt like I did. I didn't want to jeopardize my team in any way by making a foolish foul." Wright: "I'm upset like everyone else in this locker room, and I feel like we have the right to be upset.
