[let's see if I can get this done in 20 minutes...] The Mavs moved Roy Tarpley from the suspended list to IR. Tarp still hasn't passed his physical and probably won't be re-joining the team until late November or early December. The Mavs have two official radio shows: The Jim Jackson Show Wednesdays 2:30-3:00 on KLIF (570) and The Mavs Hour with Norm Sonju (and sometimes Keith Grant) Wednesdays 6:00-7:00 on KLIF Dallas at San Antonio (November 3) It was a tail of two halfs. Very similar to Saturday's Lakers' game. San Antonio went on a 8-0 run early in the 1st quarter to go up 12-7 with 6:30 remaining. The Mavs had the Spurs' lead down to 2 with 2 minutes remaining, but the Spurs scored the last 4 points of the quarter to be up 24-18 after 1. Dallas shot 33% FG and San Antonio shot 48% FG. Avery Johnson had 8 points, David Robinson had 8 points, Jamal Mashburn had 8 points, and Jason Kidd had 4 points. The 2nd teams were in for both sides and it was an ugly start of the quarter. After 2 minutes, both teams had only scored one basket each. With 7 minutes remaining, San Antonio still had their 6 point lead at 30-24. Half way through the quarter, Dallas had 5 teams fouls and San Antonio had 0. [The reffing stunk both ways the entire game.] San Antonio went on a 11-5 run and was up 41-29 with 3:30 left. Motta wanted a T and had to stomp his foot hard and get on the court to get it - he wasn't too thrilled with the reffing either. San Antonio led 5-36 at the half. Dallas shot 35% (16-46) FG and San Antonio shot 44% (20-45) FG. Dallas shot 2-6 FT and San Antonio shot 10-16 FT. Robinson had 14 points and 6 rebounds, AJ had 12 points and 5 assists, Mashburn had 9 points, and Kidd had 9 points. Jim Jackson did not play in the 2nd quarter (he only shot 1-5 in the 1st). Motta again gave one of his wonderful speeches that completely turned things around (the players laughed and said that he told war stories during halftime to relax the players). Dallas started the quarter with an 8-0 run and the Spurs led 50-44 with 10:35 left. Robinson was then was accidentally hit across the bridge of the nose and left the game until late in the quarter. The Mavs continued to rally behind the play of Kidd and tied the game at 52-52 with 8:30 left. Lorenzo Williams and Avery Johnson had to leave for the quarter with 4 fouls. The game was again tied at 63-63 with 3:05 left. The Mavs closed the quarter with a 15-5 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Mashburn with 2 seconds left. Dallas led 78-68 after 3. Dallas shot 48% FG and San Antonio shot 41%. Kidd had 22 points including 13 in the 3rd, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Dallas led 88-76 with 6:30 left before the refs again turned the momentum. Jackson was called for 2 consecutive offensive fouls and Terry Davis got a T (see below). Dallas was up 91-85 with 3:52 left. Doc Rivers nailed an open 3 to cut Dallas' led to 96-92 with 2:15 left. Two free throws by Robinson and a free throw by J.R. Reid made it a 1 point game at 96-95 with a 1minute left. Mashburn rattled in a 3 with 45 seconds left. Robinson missed a layup and the game was capped by 4 Dallas free throws and a gimme layup by Sean Elliott. Dallas 103, San Antonio 97. No question, the hero of the game was Jason Kidd. He had 27 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists. Jackson also recovered from a poor first half to finish with 17 points and 9 rebounds. The unsung hero was Terry Davis who provided some good inside D and helped control Robinson. Terry's T: Doc Rivers, a good friend of Terry's, drew an offensive foul by flopping to the floor. Terry, humorously, grabbed Rivers by the jersey. That's when he got the T. Terry said to Rivers, "Doc, tell him we're friends." Rivers answered, "Nah. I don't know what they're doing, but we need the point." The Warriors largest lead was at 15-10 with 6:28 left in the 1st and it went down hill from there for the Warriors. The Mavs whittled away at that small lead and controlled the game the rest of the way. None of the 3 Js had a very good game, but Popeye Jones and Lorenzo Williams picked up the slack. In fact, Mashburn had a lousy game - and he was still in a good mood after the game. Mash shot 3-18 FG. Ouch. Motta told Mashburn when he pulled him early in the 4th, "I'm saving your life, before you shoot your toe." George McCloud stepped up in Mashburn's absence and finished with 16 points. Popeye finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds and Lorenzo had 10 points on 5-6 FG, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Golden State's chemistry problems were evident. I can't pinpoint actual plays, but I left with the feeling that they still suffer from selfish play. Latrell Sprewell had a glamour jam that he was real excited about when the Mavs were up by 18 late in the 4th - when you are down by 18 you have no reason to showboat.
