2022 Texas Sportscastr of the Yeat by the National Sports Media
Association. Congrats, Coop!
6/23 The NBA held the 2023 Draft and Dallas had an active night.
The Mavs made an agreement to trade Davis Bertans and the #10 draft pick
to Oklahoma City for the #12 pick - the deal is not finalized/official
(there might be something that needs to wait until the free agency date).
Carson Wallace was selected at #10 (techincally still Dallas' pick, but
player was Oklahoma City's selection) and at #12 Dereck Lively was
selected (technically Oklahoma City's pick, but Dallas' selection).
Dallas then used the trade exception created when they moved Bertans to
facilitate a trade with Sacramento and received Richaun Holmes and the #24
draft pick which the Mavs used to selected Olivier-Maxence Prosper -
again, this trade is not official yet, but Prosper was Dallas' selection.
6/21 Phoenix named Greg St. Jean as an assistant coach. St. Jean
had been an assistant with Dallas.
Congrats to former Mav Popeye Jones for winning the NBA
Championship with Denver as an assistant coach!!! And to former Mavs
DeAndre Jordan (player) and Calvin Booth (GM)!
6/7 The National Basketball Athletic Trainers Association named
Dallas team physician Dr. Daniel A. Worrel as the 2023 NBA Team Physician
of the Year.
5/16 The NBA held the draft lottery, which would determine the #1-4
picks and the rest of the order for the 2023 draft. Dallas neither moved
up nor down and have the #10 pick - they retain the pick as if it was not
top-10 it would have gone to New York as part of the Kristaps Porzingis
trade. The draft is June 22.
5/10 The NBA announced the All-NBA teams. Luka Doncic was named to
the 1st team with 403 points including 60 1st team votes (out of 100). He
joined Giannis Antetokoumpo (Mil), Jayson Tatum (Bos), Joel Embiid (Phi),
and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (OKC) on the 1st team.
5/2 The NBA announced that Dallas and Minnesota will play 2 preseaon
games in Abu Dhabi,United Arab Emirates on October 5 and 7.
4/14 The NBA fined Dallas $750,000 for conduct detrimental to the
league in sitting key players the last 2 games of the season in trying to
have a bottom 10 worst record instead of trying to obtain the last play-in
playoff spot. [If Dallas' draft slot is top 10, they keep the pick, else
it goes to New York as a (top-10 protected) traded pick from the Kristaps
Porzingis trade.
[Note: even though Dallas did finish the season with the 10th worst record,
their pick could possibly move to 11th (or even less likely 12th or 13th) if
one of the teams behind them in the lottery wins a 1,2,or 3 pick in the
lottery, moving all the non-winners ahead of them down down a slot.
Dallas does have a slim chance of winning the lottery and obtaining the
1,2, or 3 pick. Note that Dallas has NEVER moved up in the lottery.]
The lottery takes placed May 16. The draft is June 22.
4/9 Dallas finished the 2023-23 season with a record of 38-44.

4/7 Dallas management decided to go into tank mode in trying to
preserve a top 10 draft pick (if Dallas' 2023 draft pick is not top 10, it
goes New York per the Kristaps Porzingis trade). [Dallas still had a
chance of making the Play-in: if Dallas won its last 2 games and Oklahoma
City lost their last game, Dallas would have had the 10th possition.] As
such, Dallas activated A.J. Lawson and McKinley Wright and placed Josh
Green (rest), Tim Hardaway (sore left ankle), Kyrie Irving (right foot
recovery), Maxi Kleber (right hamstring recovery), and Chrstian Wood
(rest) on IL - all would have been available if management was trying for
a win. In addition, Luka Doncic was limited to the 1st quarter (but
played the first possession of the 2nd, made the first basket and then
intentionally fouled and was subbed out) - it was Slovenia night at the
AAC. Dwight Powell and Jaden Hardy did not play in the 2nd half.
4/6 The NBA denied Dallas' protest of the 3/22 Dal-GS game. Dallas
protest related to an incident during the game where Dallas thought
possession was theirs but it was Golden State's and the Warriors inbounded
the ball for an uncontested layup as all of Dallas' players were at the
other end of the court (as was one of the refs). The NBA ruled that
although the situation could have been handled better, there was enough
time remaining in the game for Dallas to recover.
