for July 18 - August 1 comes from the data he gathered.


News from July 18.

There was a delay with the NBA and the Players Association as they were
arguing dollars regarding the amount for the salary cap for 2001-02 and the
signing freeze was delayed until later in the day on July 18.  An agreement
was eventually reached and the salary cap for 2001-02 is $42.5 million.

TRADE: Detroit traded a 2002 2nd round draft pick to Toronto for the rights
to Zeljko Rebraca (whose rights they received in a 1999 trade).

TRADE: New Jersey traded Stephon Marbury, Johnny Newman, and Soumaila Samake
to Phoenix for Jason Kidd and Chris Dudley.

TRADE: Phoenix traded Clifford Robinson to Detroit for Jud Buechler and John
Wallace.

Boston re-signed Milt Palacio to a 2 year, $1,430,000 contract.

Chicago signed Eddie Robinson to a 5 year, $41,020,000 contract.

Chicago renounced Corey Benjamin, Steve Goodrich, and Dragan Tarlac.

Jamal Crawford (Chi) torn his left ACL and is likely out for the season.

Detroit renounced Dana Barros, Kornel David, Joe Dumars, Derek Harper, Billy
Owens, and Corliss Williamson.  [Dumars and Harper were still officially
Detroit free agents, even though neither played in the league last season.]

The suspension for Minnesota GM Kevin McHale ended.

Orlando signed Patrick Ewing to a 2 year, $4,725,000 contract.

Philadelphia re-signed Aaron McKie to a 7 year, $42 million contract, with
only $35.5 million guaranteed and the rest being incentives.

Sacramento re-signed Doug Christie to a 7 year, $48 million contract.

Toronto re-signed Jerome Williams to a 7 year, $40.8 million contract with
the 7th year as a mutual option.

Washington signed Tyronn Lue to a 2 year, $3.1 million contract.

Washington re-signed Popeye Jones to a 1 year, $1.3 million contract.
