News from November 19. The Ind-Det game from Friday night was called with 46 seconds left in the game after a near riot broke out. Ron Artest (Ind) and Ben Wallace (Det) were involved in a scuffle. After the players were separated and the incident seemed about over, some idiot fan threw a cup at Artest and Artest went nuts and went into the stands after the fan. [The word "fans" is used simply to describe those in the stands involved, as true fans would never act this despicable.] Other Pacers went into the stands (most to get Artest, but Stephen Jackson (Ind) went after fans). Punches were thrown by Artest and Jackson at fans and fans threw punches at the players (including at Fred Jones (Ind), who looked to be playing peacemaker, and to his credit, didn't seem to throw any punches back). After Artest was back on the court, a fan approached Artest and Artest punched him in the face. A Pacer who was not in uniform also punched that fan and then Jermaine O'Neal (Ind) came over and punched the fan's friend. Fans threw cups, bottles, and drinks at the players, security, and refs and several other scuffles broke out. Eventually all players got to the locker room with none reporting injuries. It was one of the ugliest incidents in NBA history. Serious suspensions will be forth coming and the police are investigating and criminal charges are likely for a number of the fans involved and maybe some of the players. Back to basketball...
