Except were noted, the following is taken from the Dallas Morning News. 1/7 Manute Bol (Mia) has asked the Heat to release him. He has played 47 minutes in 6 games thus far. 1/9 There was an article about Isiah Thomas' possible increasing role in Detroit's management. It mentioned that Thomas has to decided whether he should play one more season (and get a raise to increase the value of his player slot) or retire to free up a $2.52 million slot for signing a draft pick or free agent. "I love Isiah," said Horace Grant, who will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. "I've never said a word against him. He's the perfect guy. He's my man." "My door is open." 1/9 The Lakers did give Kurt Rambis his $250,00 bonus after being resigned by the Lakers. [Recall that Ramibs was released by the Lakers the day before he was going to get a $250,00 bonus for still being on the roster.] Rambis: "I feel like I'm Jason from Friday the 13th movies. They keep telling me I'm dead." 1/16 Milwaukee traded Anthony Avent to Orlando for Anthony Cook and Orlando's 1994 first round draft pick. 1/16 People in Chicago continue to question how Bulls' management could allow New York to acquire Derek Harper. Scottie Pippen is the latest to take a swipe at GM Jerry Krause. Phil Jackson and Horace Grant had made comments about Krause and the trade earlier. Pippen: "New York loses their point guard and within two to three weeks, they get a solid replacement. We lose the best player of all time, and three months later we've done nothing." "If we're going to be better, if we're going to contend, we have to do something. I'm not going to be comfortable if we have to go to the playoffs with what we've got now." 1/16 San Antonio coach John Lucas walked up to redhead Dennis Rodman during a practice and gave him a $100 bill. Lucas: "Here, go get your hair bleached. You aren't worth a damn as a redhead." Rodman's hair is now either a dark purple or a dark blue. 1/16 As you might have read in other posts, the NCAA passed Proposition 120 last week at the NCAA convention. Proposition 120 allows the college players to test the draft waters without endangering their college eligibility. The current NBA rules can deal with this situation. If a player returns to college after he is drafted, the team that drafted him still owns his rights up to one year after his college class graduates. Even then, the only way the team can lose those rights is if the player sat out of organized ball for a year. The problem is that the collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and the NBA Players Association expires July 1. (the following is from my brain, not the Morning News.) The Players Association is most likely going to ask for getting rid of that rule (in addition to the usual get rid of the draft, increase the salary cap/get rid of the salary cap, increase the percentage of merchandise/television/general revenue for the players). The NBA will counter with asking for a Rookie Cap and getting rid of the one-year out option work around of the salary cap found this year. Negotiations should be interesting and tedious - but should give us something to talk about this summer. I see the Rookie Cap getting tossed, the salary cap increasing, possible incrase in merchandise percentage for the players, the draft rights rule still in place - but a modified (more beneficial to the player than the team) version, and the draft still existing. I also say that since the NCAA sort of violated the gentleman's agreemnent between the NBA and NCAA with Proposition 120, the NBA should actively recruit underclassmen to enter the draft early.
