The following is from the Dallas Morning News. Dates refer to 1/21 David Stern wants the NBA to expand to Mexico by 2000. The NBA will be opening an office in Mexico City next year. Mexico City will host four NBA exhibition games in October. Stern: "By the year 2000, we are going to have a franchise in Mexico City." 1/23 Coach John Lucas (SA) again on Dennis Rodman (SA): "Dennis ain't as crazy as he seems. I would leave my kids with him." 1/23 Bobby Hurley after attending a Kings game: "I think that's been the hardest thing of all, not being able to compete in anything after doing it all my life. I'm down to trying to beat my girlfriend in Gensis (video games)." 1/23 Tom Tolbert (LAC) on the team playing at the Forum due to structural damage to the Clippers' regular home court: "Let's play at the Inglewood YMCA or someplace where we can have a sellout." 1/23 During a loss to the Clippers, Boston coach Chris Ford looked down his bench and shouted, "Will one of you guys please wake up and play? Just one of you." 1/27 Charles Barkley (Pho): "I was the top vote-getter for the All-Star Game, and I want to thank all the fans for that. I should have gotten traded sooner. Then, you get those votes from two different states." 1/28 Former NBA ref Earl Strom was discharged from a hospital after undergoing surgery to remove a malignant brain tumor. He will have to undergo radiation treatment as part of his continuing treatment. 1/31 Former Dal coach Dick Motta, who is now advising current Dal coach Quinn Buckner, when asked if he felt awkward around Dal's management in light of his critisisms of them earlier in January: "Hell, no. I don't think I was like Columbus and discovered something new, did I?" 2/5 Terry Davis (Dal) underwent 3 hours and 45 minutes of surgery Friday morning to remove scar tissue, calcium deposits and wiring from his left elbow. Davis will miss the rest of the season. 2/5 Detroit traded Sean Elliott to Houston for Robert Horry, Matt Bullard, and two 2nd round draft picks. But ... (see below) 2/6 The Det-Hou trade is on hold pending Sean Elliott's condition. Elliott under went a physical Saturday and Houston's team physician Bruce Moseley requested additional tests. Neither team would reveal what the additional tests were for. And just in while I type, Houston has called off the trade due to Elliott failing his physical. No official comment, but speculation is either it is related to a knee injury he had in college or the virial infection he is currently suffering from. Matt Bullard and Robert Horry are on a flight back from Detroit and will not make it in time for tonight's Hou-Min game. 2/6 After again being slighted by the fan balloting, Karl Malone (Uta) has decided to wear the blinking shoes that the NBA has told him he could no longer wear for the All-Star Game. In a related note, a janitor at the Delta Center (Utah) threw away a large bag while cleaning the arena. The bag contained 6,000 All-Star ballots. 2/6 Scottie Pippen (Chi) on his new bald look: "I stayed in the barber chair too long." [Pippen is letting his hair grow back out.] 2/6 Horace Grant (Chi): "It seems like everything is failing into place for me. I'm becoming an unrestricted free agent. I made the All-Star Game, so the price definitely went up. I think I'd be cheating myself if I didn't go out there and test the market, and I'm not going to cheat myself." 2/6 The latest fad for Dallas is emu oil. Trainer Doug Atkinson has been importing the rubbing ointment from Australia at $30 a bottle. Fat Lever uses it and has been playing very well for the past two weeks. During a free throw break in Wednesday's game in Minnesota, Tony Campbell came to the bench and begged Atkinson to rub some emu oil on his leg. The oil's use has become so wide spread on the team that it has become a running gag. Tim Legler said Greg Dreiling has become obsessed with the oil. Legler: "He's been dunking in layup lines. That's when some of the veterans got into it. They said, 'If that guy is dunking, it must be a miracle drug." 2/6 Detroit retired Vinnie Johnson's #15.
