From the Dallas Morning News. 3/6 Bob Weiss, Clipper coach, after the loss to Houston: "Except for offense, defense, rebounding, and turnovers, we had a good game." 3/9 While admitting that officials made a mistake, NBA commissioner David Stern turned down a protest files by Charlotte last month following a 105-101 overtime loss to Cleveland. Stern acknowledged that officials misapplied "the away-from-the-play" foul rule in the closing seconds but said the mistake didn't have a clear impact on the outcome. The mistake occurred after Bobby Phills (Cle) was fouled by Muggsy Bogues (Cha) with 6.4 seconds left in the game played February 20. The foul should have resulted in one free throw for Cleveland plus possession of the ball. The Cavs should have been allowed to select any of their players on the floor to shoot the free throw. Instead, the officials gave Cleveland two free throws and directed Phills to shoot. He missed the first shot, then made the second to put Cleveland ahead by 3 points. Cleveland then inbounded the ball and John Williams (Cle) was fouled with 5.2 seconds left. Williams made one of two free throws to give Cleveland a 105-101 lead. 3/12 The LA Lakers extended coach Randy Pfund's contract by one year, through the 1995-96 season. However, it is uncertain whether Pfund will continue as coach or obtain some other role with the team. Owner Jerry Buss said, "I consider Randy a Laker person, and I want to offer him another year of service in some capacity." 3/16 TNT signed Hubie Brown to a new 4 year contract and are trying to do the same with Doug Collins. 3/20 Dale Ellis (SA) became the first player to ever make 1,000 3-pointers by making two 3-pointers in last night's game against Sacramento. 3/20 Scott Skiles (Orl) after a loss to Chicago in which Shaquille O'Neal and Anfernee Hardaway combined for 14 turnovers: "We can't handle the pressure. We haven't handled the pressure all season. We want to win big games, but we don't play well. We're soft. We play like we have skirts on." 3/20 Manute Bol (Phi), who is on a 10-day contract with Philadelphia and had been on Philadelphia's roster earlier in the season, on the teams effort: "We were losing before, but not like this. Now, we have two or three guys trying hard, but not the others." 3/20 Dan Majerle (Pho) on the Indiana Pacers' poor free throw shooting and their second chance shots (they went 32-48 FT and had 27 second chance points in the Pho-Ind game) : "They shoot them so bad, sometimes you can't tell where they're going." 3/20 Chicago coach Phil Jackson needs to be a little more specific. Jackson wanted to insert Bill Wennington into the first quarter of the Orlando game last week, but ended up with Bill Cartwright. "I called Bill and they're both named Bill, so before I knew it, Cartwright was in the game. I didn't want him in the game," said Jackson. Cartwright, who was activated from IR earlier in the day, played just two minutes and didn't return.
