News from January 29.

The LA Lakers signed Magic Johnson for the remainder of the season.  The
contract is believed to be worth $2.5 million.  Magic's first game back
will be Tuesday in LA vs Golden State and he will reportedly play the
power forward position.  TNT has added both the Golden State game and
Friday's Lakers-Chicago game to its lineup.  Both games start at 9:30
Central.  The Lakers placed Fred Roberts on IR to make room for Magic.

John Salley arranged for a buy out of his contract with Toronto.  His
contract was worth over $4 million for the rest of this season and next
season.

George Gervin, Jo Jo White, Lou Hudson, and Randy Smith will participate
in the Legends NBA Shootout on All-Star Saturday.

Vernon Maxwell (Phi) was sentenced to 90 days in jail for failing to
enroll in a drug rehabilitation program and not submitting to random drug
testing per his conviction of possession of marijuana last summer.
Maxwell is appealing the ruling.
