News from January 25. #1 draft pick Michael Olowokandi was released from his contract with Kinder Bologna of the Italian League and is now free to join the LA Clippers. Bologna had been disappointed with Olowokandi's performance. Sharone Wright (Tor) announced his retirement from the NBA. He is retiring due to injuries to his left arm that occurred as a result of a car accident in July, 1997. Denver named Kim Hughes as an assistant coach. Dallas signed Steve Nash to a 6 year, $33 million contract extension with a player opt-out clause after the 5th year. Teams can sign players in the 3rd year of their rookie contract (1st round draft picks) to contract extensions before March 13. Atlanta released Brian Oliver, Mitch Henderson, and Jason Lawson. Chicago signed Brent Barry to a reported 6 year, $27 million contract. Chicago renounced their rights to Scott Burrell. The LA Clippers signed Scott Brooks. Indiana released Carlos Knox. Phoenix re-signed Clifford Robinson to a 1 year, $3.5 million contract and re-signed Rex Chapman to a 6 year, $22.1 million contract. Phoenix signed 1st round draft pick (#19) Pat Garrity to a 4 year, $3.3 million contract. The 4th year is at the team's option. Phoenix also signed Gerald Brown to a non-guaranteed contract. Portland signed 1st round draft pick (#11) Bonzi Wells to a 4 year, $5 million contract. The 4th year of the contract is at the team's option. Portland signed Art Long to a non-guaranteed contract. Portland released James Blackwell, Ernest Hall, and Damian Owens. Sacramento signed Tony Dumas, Peter Aluma, Terrell Bell, Dion Cross, Joe McLean, Ray Owes, and Ryan Perryman to non-guaranteed contracts.
