This image is of the one woman who is known to have ruled ancient Egypt as pharaoh. She came to the throne around 1500 b.c.e. and ruled for nearly two decades. The title of pharaoh was rooted in the myth of Horus the younger, son of Osiris and Isis. While females had a greater role then in many ancient societies, there was no place in the symbology for a female to serve in this function. Because of this, her achievement was greater then most people realize.
