Guns And AI

The biggest explosions of revolution have often occurred not from need, but from new realization or new availability in technology. Sometimes technology occurs in ways which provide a new efficiency before anyone can realize that efficiency exists. There is a combination of cheap stuff that has now occurred which is in its simplicity very perilous. I believe the way to address this is to lay out the combinations in basic clarity so that communities at all levels can realize the dangers and begin to plan around them.

It may be helpful to those whose eyebrows are raised by my publishing this that I assert I am very sympathetic with the folks at Sandy Hook Promise, and their efforts, and that I want to see them and people like them succeed, not by dangerous abridgement of liberties as much as by education. I think we need healthy basic laws around youth, the mentally compromised, and those with historically criminal pasts. Above all these things, we need to build communities that are sympathetic with their denizens and tiers of communities around them. We need to work harder for a country that represents people, rather than preying on them. Loss of liberty and tyranny in places like the White House will drive more use of weapons, not less.

It also may be useful to the powers that be, and the neighbors that I have, locally, and effectively everywhere, to know that how this originally occurred to me was the realization of how easy it would be with a cheap gun and some simple AI lookups and calculations to destroy a newly planned ICE facility in my area from over a mile away.

That then is the introduction. We now have the knowledge, with a simple firearm of practically any stripe (No, I am not a firearm fan, let alone a firearm expert. What I do have is 48 credits in math from the University of Washington with a math GPA of 3.81), and AI. Just that. Anyone can come up with a tool that is cheap and effective, mount it on a stationary post or foundation, and use it to destroy anything a mile or so away. The destruction can be done quickly, the tool then disassembled, and disposed of, with nobody able to discover what or where, let alone who was the source, due to the distance.

With a little imagination one could begin to realize such a thing could be used against any major target. The White House. The Capital. Any capital. Any individual whose whereabouts are known. Me, for instance.

I am not trying to accelerate this happening. I want to see thinking people come up with helpful policies of mitigation. My first recipient of this document will be Mark Barden's organization. I do hope we can take it seriously. I hope enough people will do so that simple pooh pooh reactions, which are always forthcoming from existing organizations in matters like this, will not stall addressing the matter.

Oh and yes, I have absolutely no sympathy with ICE, and want to see it shut down; but not through violence.
