Check light leakage - The light tubes are chromed and carry the light for the gauge background illumination. If scratched, light is allowed to leak out, reducing the light available for the gauges. In the dark, you can see how much the light tubes leak. Paint the scratched areas with silver paint ( or chrome plastic model paint ) and then cover that with dark paint or primer.
