Most towns the size of Ruidoso would not have a Chinese restaurant as good as Great Wall of China, but since Great Wall of China in the
mountains of southern New Mexico it caters to tourists the food has to be a little more upscale in this mountain resort. Great Wall has very amiable owners, and I will have to say the staff does just about everything possible to please the customers even though many come from out of town and may not be able to return on a frequent basis. I am treated like a regular customer even though my visits may be a few months apart.

On my initial visit they cooked a dish that was not on the menu--Hot Vegetable Delight with fried tofu mixed in. It was supposed to have a Hunan sauce, but it seemed more like Szechuan sauce (sort of a sweet sauce). The vegetables were excellent, being fresh and consisting of a good variety. The tofu, though, was the best part--I seldom find tofu cooked just right as it was here.

On subsequent visits the Hunan sauce has tasted correct to me. Along with the first rate vegetables and tofu, it would be hard to ask for a better dish.

One of the good features of Great Wall is that they try to work with customers to provide special requests. Half order of vegetable delight
with tofu and Hunan sauce Half orders are available any time and do not require a special request, but this was suggested to me when I said that I wanted to try a meat dish and vegetables in the same meal. I do not think Great Wall has the type of authentic Chinese food that can be found in large city "Chinatown" restaurants, but by following the approach of ordering small plates the food can be pretty close.

The specialty of the chef is Hunan and Szechuan style cooking, so on one visit the owner suggested that I try Twice Cooked Pork. This is a spicy dish with a somewhat sweet sauce, combining the elements typical in spicy Chinese cooking. I thought the meat was good, and as I had found with the tofu dishes the main elements (meat and vegetables) were really more notable than the sauce.

Steamed vegetables or other types of dishes that are more typically Chinese than many of the selections Half order of twice cooked pork on the menu can also be served in half orders, allowing customers to have "family style" meals with several dishes for the variety that characterizes a traditional Chinese meal. The important thing is to tell the staff what you want, and they will do their best to prepare it.

The Hot and Sour Soup was not very memorable, although I believe it was made fresh since you are able to request it without MSG (meaning that it is probably not pre-made).

A sushi bar is open Wednesday through Saturday, although I did not try it.

Great Wall has a large wine and beer list, nice decor, and courteous but sometimes slow service. There is no buffet, but I believe lunch specials are available.

Great Wall is located on Sudderth Drive, Ruidoso's main drag, west of Mechem, but before you get to the traffic circle (why Ruidoso needs a traffic circle I cannot figure out). It is obvious that the owners try hard to give customers an enjoyable meal (something that I am not sure is true at all Ruidoso restaurants).
