Steak and Ale has been around for several decades, and in the early days it gained a loyal following by raising its own beef, processing the meat in Fort Worth, and shipping it to a few nearby cities in Texas and Oklahoma. Now the chain has expanded, and I do not know the source of its steaks.

Although I suspect the steaks are as good as ever, much of my rating is based on recent experiences with other menu items. There are probably as many people that order the chicken and other dishes as the steaks, and the chicken here is pretty good. The Smothered Chicken is a tasty combination of a chicken breast topped with mushrooms, onions, cheese, and whole slices of bacon. The mashed potatoes served on the side are a standout item.

I liked the Hawaiian Chicken slightly less, but it comes in a smaller portion and is more to my liking both in size and price.

I would definitely advise against ordering the fish. I have had a lot of bad fish in Oklahoma, but the Rock Sole André served at Steak and Ale was one of the worst (the sauce is the only thing that keeps me from giving it a one-star rating). The salmon is Atlantic, and also something I do not want to order.

The loaf of brown bread served at the table and the salad bar, available with all entrées, are very popular. I don't think there is anything special about the salad bar as far as the food ingredients are concerned, it is just a matter that it has been consistent over the years and provides the items that most people like (the Thousand Island dressing is pretty good also).
