Bad Companion Trees

* Good Pines * Good Oaks * Keeping an Invasive Tree *

This sequoia, seven feet across at the base, has a huge network of small roots, as well as some large ones, extending far from the tree near the surface. As a result, nothing will grow around it.

Douglas firs are beautiful trees but their large surface roots discourage any nearby competitors, especially as the mature. I cut down twelve of these after they had killed several rhododendrons and were threatening many more.

The trees survive as stump chairs, a catapult seat, benches, a swing, and a bench/chair/table set.
