Good Companion Trees: Pines

* Good Oaks * Bad Companion Trees * Keeping an Invasive Tree *

This large Whitney's Orange has completely encircled a shore pine. It blooms heavily each year and thrives in the shade of its non-invasive partner.

Even non-invasive trees have their limits, although this 24 inch Ponderosa pine has not killed the Halfdan Lem yet. The rhododendron has been raised almost a foot by the massive butt of this tree and still grows and blooms. A cedar or fir of this size wouldn't have anything growing near it without intensive feeding and watering. Eventually, though, this pine will win.
