Samurai Restaurant

7040 N. Mesa St.
El Paso, TX

Samurai has been at its present location for a number of years, and it was one of the places that initiated me to Japanese food. Several years ago, though, it changed owners and although it was never one of the best Japanese restaurants, it is even less satisfying now.

The menu has stayed pretty much the same over the years, including Tempura Udon on the lunch menu that I think is still good. The broth has a good flavor, and they do not charge extra to serve the tempura "on the side" with a special dipping sauce.

I used to like the Oriental Vegetables, but I now have a hard time with the sauce that is extremely sweet and so thin that it runs all over the plate and into the fried rice (which, by the way, would be very good rice except it becomes soggy with the oriental sauce).

Some pretty bad items I've had in recent years include the sushi and salmon dishes (normally my favorite items at a Japanese restaurant). Dinner prices are too high for what you receive, although lunch is somewhat reasonable.

Although I don't like much else in the restaurant, the delicious broth and golden battered tempura of the tempura udon still makes a pretty good lunch. The green tea is very good, and although the restaurant is on the expensive side, tempura udon on the lunch menu is a pretty good deal.
