In the 1940s and 50s, Bob designed and built the family dream home and the first Anderson Garden in Springfield, New Jersey. Bob and Betty moved to Enumclaw in 1961 to create the second Anderson Garden. John designed and built the home above in the 70s and 80s. John and Doreen then moved to the Anderson Garden in Enumclaw in 2000.

The homesite above is like an island in the sky. It drops off sharply on all sides except for the narrow neck at the driveway. Below are plateaus at different levels, eight acres of forestland, and the creeks. The rich density of the tree cover and the intimacy of falling water in the forest contrast with the expansiveness of sky and mountains from up on the island.
