Aiwa Receiver Dead…

I’ve had this Aiwa AV-DV75 receiver now for around a decade and today it bit the dust.  It still powers, the speaker relays engage, but no matter which input there is no output.  I’ve experienced this before and the last time it did this a processor reset brought it back to life, but not this time.  I’m really unhappy, this unit had some good solid low end heft, and I like to feel my music. The unit I had in two channel mode ran 170 watts per channel.

Haven’t the funds for a new replacement and not having much luck finding anything used near that power level.  This was a unit made after Sony bought Aiwa but unlike most Sonys, it didn’t have a power supply that wimped out with sustained bass.  This thing could sustain bass full power both channels until plaster rattled off the walls.  All my video stuff is old, composite RCA type NTSC no high definition so I don’t need a modern HDMI capable receiver, just switching ordinary composite video will do.  If anybody knows of anyone selling something reasonable, let me know please.  The quality of the audio amp if of more importance to me than most other considerations.

Western Education

Most of the time I think Alex Jones is just totally over the top. But with respect to our education system, I think he is dead on here. I’ve seen the effects on my own children with the exception of my oldest son who was able to see it for what it is.

What Lies Ahead

It seems more than coincidence that a verse I posted the other day because it seemed to resonate well with the challenges I face in life today and what I’m trying to do to get through them should be today’s Daily Bread Bible reference.

Philippians 3:12-17

English Standard Version (ESV)

Straining Toward the Goal

12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. 16 Only let us hold true to what we have attained.

17 Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.

Irradiated Foods

Many sources tell us that irradiated food is safe, that it doesn’t make the food radioactive, but there are activation mechanisms for both gamma rays and neutrons, and now it would appear also for X-rays, so basically they lie through their teeth.

[Induced radioactivity in irradiated foods by X ray or gamma ray].

[Article in Japanese]

Abstract

In the course of the archival studies on safety of irradiated foods by the US Army, experimental records conducted by Glass & Smith, and Kruger & Wilson were investigated, based on our experimental experience. Food irradiation by Co-60 or 4 approximately 24MeV X ray can induce small amount of radioactivity in the foods. The principal mechanisms of the nuclear reactions are (gamma, n). The resulting nuclear products found in irradiated target solutions were Ba-135m, Pb-204m, Hg-199m, Ag-107m,Ag-109m, Cd-111m,Cd-113m, Sn-117m, Sn-119m, Sr-87m, Nb-93m, In113m, In-115m, Te-123m, Te-125m, Lu-178m Hf-160m by the (gamma, n) reaction. The total radio-activities in beef, bacon, shrimp, chicken, and green beans were counted at 60 days after irradiation by Cs-137, Co-60, and fuel element. The activities more than background were found in irradiated bacon and beef by Co-60. and activities were found in most foods when foods were irradiated by high energy X ray and the fuel element. The results were understood as the neutron activation by (gamma, n) or (n, gamma) reaction. Therefore, high energy X ray and spent fuel element were not used for food irradiation. As the results of this study Co-60 has been used with small amount of induced radioactivity in food.
