It is important to note (especially if you sail) that Whitbread beer was brewed in London. Samuel Whitbread began brewing in London in 1742, and in 1750 moved to the famous Chiswell Street brewery, which no longer brews but still stands in London23. The Whitbread Round the World Race started in Portsmouth, England, and ended in Southampton, England. The race was named after the Whitbread brewing company, which sponsored the event from 1973 to 20014.

in 2001 it became the Volvo Ocean Race after Swedish automobile manufacturer Volvo took up the sponsorship, and in 2019 it was renamed The Ocean Race2. The Ocean Race is currently ongoing, with the next race scheduled to start in Alicante, Spain in 2023 and finish in Genoa, Italy2. The yachts used in The Ocean Race are Volvo Ocean 65 and IMOCA 602.

Lisa and I left the Royal Thames Yacht Club to find the London 10k. We found athletes running past the Jubilee Underground line station when we boarded and caught the leaders at Big Ben when we got off. We walked the race course seeing runners at London Landmarks while we looked for interesting London Pubs.

Do London pubs serve craft beer?

Some London pubs serve the modern craft beer. When I visited in 2018, I taste tested brews and selected a craft brew from Oregon as the one I liked best. But, on this trip, I avoided craft beer because I wanted an authentic traditional London experience. Nonetheless here are some of the best craft beer pubs in London:

  • The Old Red Cow craft brew pub
  • The Queen’s Head craft brew pub
  • The Earl of Essex craft brew pub
  • Crown and Anchor craft brew pub
  • The Understudy craft brew pub
  • Cock Tavern craft brew pub
  • Old Fountain craft brew pub
  • The Southampton Arms craft brew pub
  • BrewDog (Shoreditch)
  • Duke’s Brew & Que (De Beauvoir Town)
  • Hops & Glory
  • Cask Pub and Kitchen, Pimlico
  • Draft House, Old Street
  • The Dovetail, Clerkenwell
  • The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton
  • The Arbitrager

It is important to note that the selection of craft beer may vary depending on the pub. Craft beer is a term used to describe beer that is brewed using traditional methods and high-quality ingredients, often by small, independent breweries2. Craft beer is typically more flavorful and complex than mass-produced beers.

Some London breweries that are known for producing real ale include:

  • Fuller’s: Fuller’s is a well-known brewery based in London that produces a range of cask ales, including their flagship beer, London Pride16.
  • Young’s: Young’s is another London brewery that is known for producing real ale. Their Special bitter is a popular choice among beer enthusiasts1.
  • Brodie’s: Brodie’s is a smaller real ale producer from the London area that offers a range of craft beers, including ales, IPAs, and stouts2.
  • Sambrook’s: Sambrook’s is a microbrewery based in London that produces a range of cask ales, including their flagship beer, Wandle2.
  • Redemption: Redemption is a London brewery that produces a range of cask ales, including their flagship beer, Redemption Pale Ale2.
  • The Kernel: The Kernel is a microbrewery based in London that produces a range of bottle-conditioned beers, including ales, IPAs, and stouts2.
  • Twickenham Fine Ales: Twickenham Fine Ales is a London brewery that produces a range of cask ales, including their flagship beer, Naked Ladies2.
  • Windsor & Eton: Windsor & Eton is a London brewery that produces a range of cask ales, including their flagship beer, Windsor Knot2.
  • Meantime Brewing Company: Meantime Brewing Company is a London brewery that produces a range of beers, including lagers, ales, and stouts, among others4.
  • Camden Town Brewery: Camden Town Brewery is a London brewery that produces a range of beers, including lagers, ales, and stouts, among others4.
  • Fourpure Brewing Co.: Fourpure Brewing Co. is a London brewery that produces a range of beers, including lagers, IPAs, and stouts, among others4.

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, and there are many other London breweries that produce real ale. The point being made is that there are more breweries in London than are breweries in Munich, a Mecca for beer drinkers owing to Octoberfest. In addition, London supports styles of beer served warm (cellar temperatures) which exemplifies the traditional experience expected to be provided by pubs serving English Beers.

As Wine is to Paris, Beer is to London. Beer is central to a visit to London.

Beer Basics:

  • Cask-aged beer is a type of beer that is conditioned and served from a cask without additional nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure1. This type of beer is also known as real ale.
  • Lager is a type of beer that is fermented and conditioned at low temperatures, resulting in a clean, crisp taste and a light color1.
  • Real beer is a term used to describe beer that is brewed using traditional methods and ingredients, without the use of artificial additives or preservatives3. Real beer is also known as cask ale.
  • Real beer and cask-aged beer are the same thing.
  • There are many types of real beer that are made for the London market, including bitter, mild, brown ale, old ale, stout, porter, and India pale ale4.
  • Many breweries provide real beer to London, including Fuller’s, Young’s, and Greene King4.
  • There are many craft brew pubs in London, including The Old Red Cow, The Queen’s Head, The Earl of Essex, Crown and Anchor, The Understudy, Cock Tavern, Old Fountain, and The Southampton Arms25.
  • While craft beers are gaining popularity in London, they are not necessarily replacing cask beers. Cask ales are still popular in many London pubs1.
  • It is possible to get real beer in the USA, although it may be more difficult to find than other types of beer1.

Samuel Smith’s Brewery is a real ale brewery located in Tadcaster, Yorkshire1, approximately 200 miles away from London2. Samual Smith’s brews a variety of high-quality ales, lagers, stouts, organic fruit beers, ciders, and perrys1.

The history of cask-conditioned real ale in London can be traced back to the rise of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) in the 1970s. Here is a brief overview of its history:

  1. Rise of CAMRA: In the 1970s, the British beer industry was dominated by filtered and pasteurized ales served under carbon dioxide pressure, known as “keg beer.” This led to the decline of traditional cask-conditioned ales. CAMRA was formed in 1971 to promote and preserve traditional British beer styles, including cask-conditioned real ale13.
  2. Coined Term “Real Ale”: CAMRA coined the term “real ale” to describe beer that is brewed from traditional ingredients, undergoes secondary fermentation in the container, and is served without extraneous carbon dioxide. This term helped differentiate cask-conditioned ales from keg beers1.
  3. Popularity and Revival: Real ale remained popular within the UK, particularly in traditional pubs. In 2019, 420 million pints of cask ale were sold in the UK, accounting for 13.5% of all beer sales1.
  4. Real Ale Pubs: London has a rich tradition of real ale pubs. These pubs serve cask ales from London breweries, including Meantime Brewing Company and Camden Town Brewery5. Some notable real ale pubs in London include Sutton Arms, The Harp, The Pembury Tavern, and Cask Pub & Kitchen6.

Cask-conditioned real ale continues to be an important part of London’s beer culture, with a focus on preserving traditional brewing methods and flavors. It is enjoyed by beer enthusiasts and visitors seeking an authentic British pub experience.

Process of making real beer

  1. Brewing: The brewing process begins with the selection of high-quality ingredients such as barley malt, roasted barley, hops, and yeast. These ingredients are combined with water and undergo fermentation to produce alcohol and carbonation.
  2. Conditioning: Samuel Smith’s Brewery is known for its naturally conditioned draught beer, which is served from oak casks made and repaired by their own cooper3. Conditioning allows the beer to mature and develop its flavors.
  3. Distribution: Samuel Smith’s Brewery distributes its beers through various channels, including beer importers and distributors3. They have their own cooper to ensure the quality of their oak casks.
  4. Marketing: The brewery promotes its beers through various marketing efforts, including branding, advertising, and participation in beer festivals6. They may also collaborate with other breweries or create limited-edition releases to generate interest.
  5. Serving: Traditionally, cask ales, including those from Samuel Smith’s Brewery, are served at cellar temperature, which is slightly cooler than room temperature. This allows the flavors and aromas of the beer to be fully appreciated5.

Competitors to Samuel Smith’s Brewery include other breweries that produce real ales and craft beers. Some notable competitors in the UK include Fuller’s, Greene King, and Timothy Taylor’s. Internationally, there are numerous craft breweries that offer a wide range of beer styles and flavors.

Pubs in London do not tend to serve beer exclusively from a single distributor -like in the USA – and often carry a variety of brands, including those from different breweries. This allows customers to have a choice and experience a diverse range of beers5 without the inconvenience of transportation (crawls) from pub to pub. But English residents fear that the poor ways of the USA will influence their beer drinking experience. Hence, some pubs will post a notice near the entrance that they are “Free House.”

A free house is a pub that is not tied to a particular brewery or distributor and is free to choose which beers to serve4.As mentioned earlier, pubs are not typically rewarded for restricting consumer choice to beer provided by a single brewery or distributor. In fact, many beer enthusiasts prefer pubs that offer a diverse range of beers from different breweries4.The closest free house pubs to the Royal Thames Yacht Club are:

While cask conditioned ale undergoes secondary fermentation in the cask, which can contribute to some beneficial yeast and bacteria, it is not typically consumed for its probiotic properties1. But I like the notion that drinking beer is like drinking coffee, that it benefits health and..

Real ale, including bottle-conditioned varieties, is often considered to cause less bloating compared to carbonated beers. This is because cask ale has a lower level of carbonation and is served at a slightly warmer temperature, which can result in a smoother and less gassy drinking experience1.

The carbonation in cask ale comes from the natural fermentation process that occurs inside the cask, where the yeast consumes sugars and produces carbon dioxide. This natural carbonation is what gives cask ale its gentle fizz13.
